Eight years ago director Mpumi “Supa” Mbele went to watch a live performance of South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo in Joburg Theatre with his son, who had no idea who they were but was amazed by their performance. He turned to his dad and said: “Ah dad, you should tell their story.”
“That’s where the idea started,” the filmmaker tells Variety about the documentary “Music Is My Life,” in which he chronicles the life of the late Joseph Shabalala – from his early years in rural KwaZulu-Natal and his rise to global fame with the iconic group, until his death in 2020. The film, which provides a fresh insight into the man, his ambitions and his band, screens at Joburg Film Festival.
It was the discovery of a secret archive, one kept by his widow with an astonishing collection of recordings and audio tapes made by Shabalala himself, and which...

Coming to America’s lovely opening shot descends through clouds, down to the fictional African country of Zamunda as Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s “Mbube (Wimoweh)” echoes across the vast horizon. It’s one of the most beautiful openings in a 1980s studio film, evoking a real sense of collective harmony in the most effortless way. The proceeding, foul-mouthed romantic comedy is of course anything but tranquil. Facing an arranged marriage he does not believe in, the nation’s pampered young prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy) defies all cultural and traditional norms and visits Queens, NY, hoping to discover true love.
The flimsy narrative switcheroo concocted for its sequel, Coming 2 America—directed by Craig Brewer, who reunites with Murphy after Dolemite Is My Name—contains none of the original film’s overt criticism and anger about capitalism, greed, and consumerism. It doubles down on the fish-out-of-water scenario, this time involving Akeem and...

I’ve listened to Paul Simon’s Graceland at least a thousand times (no exaggeration), so if you’re looking for an objective analysis of Under African Skies, Joe Berlinger’s documentary about that seminal work, you won’t find it here. Perhaps someone who doesn’t have virtually every lyric of every song on Simon’s masterpiece memorized, someone who doesn’t tear up just thinking of the “Mississippi Delta shining like a national guitar,” could do a better job of telling you what’s what when it comes to this movie. All I know is that as I sat and watched it I felt my childhood come alive on screen. Each familiar chord reminded me of those countless hours I spent listening to these songs over and over again, whether as the soundtrack to family dinners, the accompaniment to late-night homework sessions or the auditory salve on a long, boring...

#71. Untitled Paul Simon Documentary - Joe Berlinger Since his 1992 Sundance winning debut Brother's Keeper, Joe Berlinger has been a mainstay with the festival. He last premiered 2009's Crude at the fest and recently mentioned that he is hoping to bring a Paul Simon doc to the fest - we expect it there and we expect it to be nothing like his last music-related doc, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster. Gist: Musician Paul Simon reunites with the performers of Ladysmith Black Mambazo in South Africa for the 25th anniversary of their work together on the hit album "Graceland." Some surprising stars of TV and film have launched record labels with varying success. Here are five of the oddest
With the music business in such dire straits that record companies resort to collecting coins from the back of the sofa to pay for the office teas, it's surprising to note that some people are actually starting their own labels. And they're not the people you might expect. While the suits are selling their mothers for a multi-brand platform download, talkshow hosts, actors and magazines are just some of the people launching their own niche imprints. We assess this new batch of wannabe Geffens ...

Cornetist Graham Haynes leads Bitches Brew RevisitedThe sixth annual New York Winter Jazz Festival took place this weekend in Greenwich Village and illustrated just why the City is aptly known as the Jazz capital of the world. The festival organizers curated a program of artists from around the planet that displayed the breadth of talent working in the jazz circuit today. The temperature on the streets may have been 20 degrees, but inside the venues were hot and blistering with phenomenal music. The fest’s performances ran the gamut of styles and moods. The program featured the live electronic trip-hop of Mark Giuliana Beat Music at the club Kenny’s Castaways, and the classic vocal style of Sachal Vasandani at Sullivan Hall. The controversial, hammer-fisted Eric Lewis clobbered the piano and took on his critics by ending his performance with a pronouncement that he is unafraid to express himself in any...

The Invictus soundtrack.
Nelson Mandela: “How do we inspire ourselves to greatness when nothing less will do? How do we inspire those around us?”
Matt Damon: “…I think he wants us to win the World Cup.”
At last, a film arrives to prove that rugby is the key to socio-political harmony.
Clint Eastwood has had an awful lot of critical acclaim recently for a body of directorial work that is a mixed bag at best, and drowning in sentimentality. The mewling melodramatic yukkishness of Million Dollar Baby, the unengaging if well spirited Flags Of Our Fathers, the it’s-subtitled-therefore-meaningful Letters From Iwo Jima (which wasn’t that bad, but certainly wasn’t that good), and the enjoyable cranky vigilantism of Gran Torino. Now we’ve got Invictus, which is essentially Goal, but with two A-listers, a different shaped ball, and Nelson Mandela.
That’s not necessarily a recipe for disaster (Cinderella Man,...

Chicago – There are dozens of concert films and music DVDs out there. Most of them are interchangeable collector’s items made almost solely for diehard fans of the band or artist. Very few transcend the limitations of their sub-genre to become more than a mild diversion. “Paul Simon and Friends” is one of those very few.
DVD Rating: 5.0/5.0 Full disclosure is probably necessary before getting too deeply into this review - I was born, raised, and still am a huge fan of both Simon & Garfunkel and Paul Simon’s solo work. I still have vinyl copies, handed down from my parents, of most of Simon & Garfunkel’s work and very few recordings impacted me the way “Graceland” did ringing through my childhood home.
So, of course, I’m prone to a more positive response to a tribute concert of one of my musical icons. But even with that said, it...
