“Business is business,” Young Thug says at the tail end of “Parade on Cleveland,” the opening track to his third studio album. Over a particularly hard-hitting 808, the Atlanta rapper proceeds to parrot the phrase 19 more times in under 20 seconds, turning a potentially prosaic statement into a thrilling declaration of intent.
Despite Young Thug’s continuing legal issues, when it comes to spitting wackadoodle lyrics set to quirky trap beats, it’s still business as usual for the Mc. While Business Is Business’s foreboding black-and-white cover art acknowledges Young Thug’s current incarceration upfront, and “Parade on Cleveland” features a voice message from the rapper calling in from a Cobb County detention facility, nearly all of the material on the album was recorded before his 2022 imprisonment. This is made exceedingly clear on the jangly “Cars Bring Me Out,” which includes a dated reference to pandemic side hustles.

Last year, Atlanta rapper Sergio “Gunna” Kitchens was riding high on the release of his celebratory eighth project, DS4EVER. But in the year and a half since that LP’s January 2022 release, Gunna and Ysl label head Young Thug have had their lives and careers upended by Rico charges that have left them and several other Ysl artists incarcerated in Georgia. While he was locked up, Gunna also experienced the death of Ysl rapper Lil Keed. Following his release in December 2022, a video of Gunna accepting a plea deal...

Like all award shows, the 2023 Grammys weren't without a few hiccups this year, even with 91 categories' worth of honors for music's best artists. Held live from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Feb. 5, the ceremony awarded trophies to big names like Beyoncé, Harry Styles, Adele, Lizzo, Taylor Swift, and Kendrick Lamar, as well as first-timers like Viola Davis (now an Egot winner), Kim Petras, and Samara Joy. However, some of the (not-so-shocking) snubs were the talk of the night.
Most notably, Styles's album of the year win over nominees like Beyoncé, Bad Bunny, and Lamar didn't blow over well with fans who thought he didn't deserve the award. On Twitter, one user wrote, "You must be nuts trying to justify Harry styles winning Aoty over Beyoncé/Adele/Bad Bunny/Lizzo in this current state of music," while another tweeted, "Harry styles said 'this doesn't happen to people like...

It’s no secret that generations of hip-hop artists have fallen victim to gun violence and drug abuse, with what feels like an unsettling uptick in deaths throughout the genre over the past decade. On his latest single, “Same Problems,” Aap Rocky reflects on the cycle of life and death in connection to generational struggles and a yearning for change where possible.

A show about a down-on-his-luck college dropout and his rapper cousin navigating the music industry as the latter’s star rises; created by a multi-hyphenate who, at one point, was a full-time rapper himself; set in what many might argue was the rap capital of the United States for most of the past decade…
You’d think Donald Glover’s FX series “Atlanta” would be a cakewalk for song placements — license a few Migos, Young Thug and Gucci Mane tracks and call it a day — but music supervisors Jen Malone and Fam Udeorji are anything but paint-by-numbers.
While musically, the series pays ample homage to its titular hometown, the pair has worked closely with Glover and the rest of the show’s writers room throughout its four-season run — coming to an end in November — to establish a musical palette that simultaneously reflects Atlanta while also expanding far beyond the city limits.

Attorneys for Gunna have filed a third bond motion for the Atlanta artist, this time claiming that the Fulton County prosecutor’s office has modified the Ysl indictment to remove any reference to him being involved in violence. Rolling Stone has received a copy of the filing, which is the latest attempt at pretrial release for Gunna (given name Sergio Kitchens) while awaiting trial on a racketeering charge in a 56-count Ysl indictment handed down in May.

By all accounts, Mariel Semonte Orr was a natural-born leader — intelligent and level-headed, with a scene-stealing personality. Orr, also known as the Atlanta rapper Trouble, deserved a shot at rap’s big leagues, and nearly everyone who spoke for this article believed he would have soon received it.
In the early hours of June 5, Orr was shot and killed during what police say was a domestic dispute in the Atlanta suburb of Conyers. He died at a nearby hospital hours later at age 34, before friends, fans and family would see him realize his full potential.
