Albert Hammond Jr, best known as the lead guitarist in The Strokes, has announced his fifth solo album, Melodies on Hiatus, out June 23rd on Red Bull Records. What’s more, he’s shared a handful of supporting tour dates (grab tickets here) and lead single “100-99” featuring Goldlink.
Besides GoldLink, Melodies on Hiatus features Rainsford, Steve Stevens, and Matt Helders. It was co-written remotely with Simon Wilcox, with premium mastering from Dave Cooley and mixing by Tony Hoffer. Pre-orders are ongoing.
“100-99” was partially inspired by the ’90s hip-hop Hammond Jr grew up listening to, he explained in a statement. “I would always gravitate towards the melodic hooks in the songs I heard on the radio, specifically anything Dr. Dre was producing or rapping on,” he said. “Years later, I noticed myself pulling from the style of those melodic lines in my guitar work, even though it wasn’t...

It’s the turn of the century. New York’s music scene is flatlining. Enter The Strokes, all surly insouciance, torn denim and tattered Converse. Theirs is an electrifying din; mixing distorted vocals with spindly guitars, it’s the defibrillator that the rock ’n’ roll scene so badly needs. From grimy graffiti-covered toilet stalls in dingy dive bars, these five New Yorkers stumble bleary-eyed out onto the biggest stages on the planet.

Was the last rock renaissance really in New York City in the aughts? That’s the claim filmmakers Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace make with their documentary adaptation of music journalist Lizzie Goodman’s book “Meet Me in the Bathroom: Rebirth and Rock and Roll in New York City 2001-2011.”
This scuzzy, dreamy nonfiction greatest hits compilation prefers lyricism to reportage, with testimony told entirely in voiceover instead of talking heads. It’s also entirely a montage of on-the-fly found footage — of concerts, early interviews, Courtney Love flashing her boobs to a crowd of frothing onlookers during her 24-hour MTV takeover — and . The Strokes, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Moldy Peaches, James Murphy, and Interpol all get significant play here, with the film going back to their DIY roots in Lower Manhattan — but leaves us hanging from there. New York, a city responsible for bands such as The Velvet Underground, Blondie and Ramones, was a cultural wasteland by the late 90s and the wider music scene was pumping out shlock like Limp Bizkit and Hoobastank.
As Adam Green says in the opening scenes of Meet Me In The Bathroom, a documentary based on Lizzy Goodman’s oral history of nYc’s musical rebirth, “Maybe New York wasn’t the kind of city anymore that produces iconic bands”.
Then came The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio, LCD Soundsystem and many more over the next ten years, turning the Lower East Side and Brooklyn into hipster havens.
I remember the excitement when The Strokes, a gang of good-looking skinny boys with filthy hair and a filthier attitude, broke, in part thanks to the British music press, as I hustled for a copy of their Rough Trade debut...

There’s a montage early on in Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace’s documentary “Meet Me in the Bathroom” that is bound to give any geriatric millennial pause. The year is 1999. It’s New Year’s Eve in New York City. President Bill Clinton is speaking on television, full of optimism for the new century, while doomsday preppers stock up on ammo in anticipation of the Y2K bug plunging the world into a technological dark age. With the Twin Towers looming peacefully in the background and nary a cell phone in sight, five Manhattanites barely out of their teens are poised to emerge as the saviors of rock and roll, which as far as anyone knows will continue to occupy the center of popular music for years to come. Was that really that long ago? Were we ever so young?

Titled “Climate Crisis, and Why We Should Panic,” the film, translated into 14 different languages, is the second of a two-part explainer video series for Extinction Rebellion, focusing on the climate and ecological crisis. Knightley — who will next star in and executive produce the series “The Essex Serpent” — explains in the film what is causing climate change, why governments must enter crisis mode to tackle this issue, and what will happen if something isn’t done about it now.
“I want to speak out in support of Extinction Rebellion,” Knightley said. “Lending my voice to the most urgent issue of our time feels like the right way for me to take a stand, in the hope that we can leave a world worth living in for our children.”

The first Strokes album in seven years picks up pretty much where the last one, 2013’s Comedown Machine, left off — another study in what LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy once called “borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered Eighties.” Few bands so embody a place and time as the Strokes did New York City in the Giuliani-twilight/pre-smoking-ban era, but now they seem more interested in Martha Quinn’s New York than the one they once defined.

Lil Baby was performing across the field. Only two years after “My Dawg” launched the Atlanta rapper from his label’s glorified weed carrier to the leader of his city’s next generation, he was closing out the first night of Lollapalooza. Instead, they patiently waited for five rockers (arguably) past their peak to hit the stage.

The adage "sex, drugs and rock & roll" can best be used describe the music scene in the Seventies, an era where all genres were fueled by everything from alcohol and marijuana to cocaine and Quaaludes. The third installment of 1973: Shaping the Culture, a new video series from Rolling Stone presented by HBO's new show Vinyl, delves into the influence – both creative and destructive – drugs had on the music scene.

Nile Rodgers, the Strokes' Albert Hammond Jr., author Fran Lebowitz and more reminisce about the style of the early Seventies in the second installment of 1973: Shaping the Culture, a new video series from Rolling Stone, presented by HBO's new show Vinyl.
"What's great about '73 is that, everybody forgets this, but kind of that pimp look," Please Kill Me author Legs McNeil says. "That whole kind of Isaac Hayes, Shaft look. And the white guys made glam out of it ... You gotta remember that men's fashions were really ugly.

Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. is sober now. After years of hard partying, he eventually embarked on an overall reevaluation of life and its absurdities that helped give him the focus needed to produce his recently released third solo album, Momentary Master. It's a punchy, often playful, ten-song record that takes its title from a Carl Sagan quote about human lives being in control of "a fraction of a dot"; it's also a by-product of years of self-improvement. "All these things would not have happened if my mind had been elsewhere," Hammond says. "I would've been living too much in a world of emotion, which leaves no time for thought, no time to take action." Curious to learn more about the new Hammond, we asked him to name a few things that have helped keep him right. Living in New York City, The Strokes cast a long shadow. When the four piece first hit shelves with Is This It in 2001, critics praised them as messiahs from the Lower East Side, here to save New York City and Rock ‘n’ Roll as a whole. Since then, living up to the hype has been […]

Joaquin Phoenix's life is as unique as the characters he plays onscreen.
The actor has been working on and off since the early '80s, though it wasn't until his star turn opposite Russell Crowe in "Gladiator" (2000) that Phoenix became a household name. Since then, Phoenix has turned in a string of unforgettable performances, most notably his incredible portrayal of Johnny Cash in "Walk the Line" (2005).
Whether or not you've had a chance to see Phoenix fall in love with a computer in this year's Oscar-nominated "Her," there's still much to know about the established star. From his unusual upbringing to his music videos, here are 17 things you probably don't know about Joaquin Phoenix.
1. The actor was born in 1974 and is the third of five children: River (b. 1970), Rain (b. 1972), Liberty (b. 1976), and Summer (b. 1978).

In a chat with NME, Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr., the once big-haired dreamboat, shares the indie rock equivalent of a True Hollywood Story, revealing a five-year drug addiction. It went something like this: “oxycontin and cocaine at 24, 25, 26. And then I became [addicted to] heroin around then. So from 25, 27 till 29.” That might explain some past unorthodox behavior and, according to Consequence of Sound, the 33-year-old uses these experiences on Ahj — a solo Ep being released October 8 on bandmate Julian Casablancas’ Cult Records — singing lines like “I can’t believe I lost my mind.” Now four years clean, there were lots of nitty gritty drug details Hammond wanted to get off his chest: "It's not so much that I wasn't in a happy place; I was just... God knows where I was. I was just very high. That's where I was... I mean, do you want me to get...

It hasn't taken Krysten Ritter long to bounce back from the cancellation of her sharp show "Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23."
After years of playing the snarky sidekick, she's started snagging bigger roles in upcoming films like Tim Burton's "Big Eyes" and the adaptation of "Veronica Mars." The latest movie she's signed on for is the curiously named indie "Asthma."
"Asthma" marks the directorial debut of Jake Hoffman, son of Dustin. The younger Hoffman is turning his lens on "the consequences of the live fast, die young mentality in NYC's indie rock scene," which doesn't give us a whole lot of information (especially since it's debatable what constitutes the "indie rock scene" in New York City these days). Albert Hammond Jr. from The Strokes will be appearing as himself, so we could guess "Asthma" takes place in the early '00s.

Director Jake Hoffman, son of Dustin, has cast Benedict Samuel as the lead in Asthma, a coming-of-age movie set in the live-fast, die-young New York indie rock scene.
It's the 25-year-old Australian actor's first Us film, scripted by Jake Hoffman who makes his directing debut.
He's co-starring with Krysten Ritter, Christine Lahti and Albert Hammond Jr. of The Strokes, who will play himself. The news broke in Deadline.com, which said filming will start in the northern fall.
Samuel told If his character is "this generation's Holden Caulfield.". Hoffman has likened the film's tone to a cross between Danny Boyle's Trainspotting and Terrence Malick's Badlands.
A Nida graduate, Samuel is represented by United Management's Natasha Harrison, Wme and Management 360. His credits include Underground: The Julian Assange Story, Home and Away and Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo.

Strokes fans, rejoice. As first reported by Seattle rock station 107.7 The End and confirmed by Billboard, The Strokes plan to release an album this year. The new record would be the band's first since "Angles" came out in 2011.
"Previewing brand new Strokes [song] 'All the Time,'" wrote "Mike" on The End's Facebook page. "Thanks to RCA Records. We'll have to 'leak' this soon. You won't be disappointed."
Rumors of a new Strokes album have been circulating since 2011. "We have songs that you can tell are gonna be good ones (that) we're all excited to play," guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. told Billboard in April of 2011. "I don't know if we're the kind of band that would ever play something new before it came out, just the way the Internet works and people recording it. I think even if we had the whole record done, we wouldn't play it 'til the album was out.

Billboard is reporting that The Strokes are in the studio working on their follow-up to 2011's Angels.
Gus Oberg, who also worked on parts of Angles as well as guitarist Albert Hammond Jr.'s 2008 solo album Como Te Llama?, is reportedly producing the effort, with the band logging time recently at New York's Electric Lady Studios.
Billboard notes that the album would likely be The Strokes' last under their current contract with longtime label home RCA Records.
The band has been more active in recent years than they had been throughout much of their career. Angles was the band's first album since 2006's First Impressions of Earth and they toured heavily in support of the set, including several stops at major festivals like Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits Music Festival and headlining slots at Coachella in 2011 and Spain's Festival Internacional de Benicàssim, where Nikolai Fraiture revealed to NME that they...

Danny and long-time girlfriend Bijou finally tied the knot! Congrats to the happy couple! Sorry, ladies, but Danny Masterson is officially off the market! Ashton Kutcher's That '70s Show co-star married Bijou Phillips, his girlfriend of eight years, on Oct. 18 at a private castle in Tipperary, Ireland, People reports. Bijou wore a gorgeous custom Zac Posen gown, while the groom looked dapper in Albert Hammond Jr. for Confederacy. We're happy for Danny and Bijou, but all this talk of weddings has us wondering: Was Ashton throwing Danny a bachelorette party the night he met Sara Leal, his alleged mistress? A source confirmed to HollywoodLife.com that Ashton, Danny and Danny's brother Chris -- who served as his best man -- were all at San Diego's Fluxx night club on the evening of Sept. 23, though our source mistakenly assumed they were celebrating Danny's birthday. Just something to chew on. Congrats again to the happy couple!
