Netflix’s hit supernatural thriller K-drama Hellbound was announced in September 2022 to return with a second season. Its cliffhanger ending left a lot to explore and many theories to unravel. Based on a webtoon by Yeon Sang-ho, the director has yet to reveal a new storyline. But Hellbound Season 2 has reported actor Kim Sung-cheol will replace Yoo Ah-in as the character Jin-soo due to Yoo’s recent drug scandal.
Yoo Ah-in starred as Jin-soo in ‘Hellbound’ K-drama | via Netflix ‘Hellbound’ Season 2 has dropped Yoo Ah-in as he has tested positive for multiple drugs
In February, news hit that Yoo Ah-in was under investigation for drug use. According to Soompi, Yoo was banned from leaving the country under suspicion of violating the Narcotics Control Act with propofol. The milky white substance is a sleep inducer and anesthetic prohibited in South Korea. While being tested, Yoo was also found positive for marijuana.

Yeon Sang-ho may have not been able to replicate the grand success of his live-action debut “Train to Busan” yet, but you have to hand it to the writer-director for never shying away from trying new challenges and newer genres. After showing much promise in his much acclaimed animated features “King of Pigs” and “The Fake”, he ventured into live-action territory with “Train to Busan”, following that up with with the superhero entry “Psychokinesis” before going back to the world of zombies with “Peninsula”, which may not have lived up to the hype of the original (or even its animated prequel “Seoul Station”), yet ended up being the highest-grossing Korean release in the pandemic inflicted 2020. Yeon would then join hands with Netflix to bring his webtoon “Hellbound” to an Ott series before re-teaming with the streaming giant for his first venture into full-blown sci-fi with “Jung_E”.

Currently streaming on Netflix, JUNG_E is the latest film from Sang-ho Yeon, the director of zombies-on-a-train nailbiter Train to Busan. Whilst this dystopian robo-thriller doesn’t quite hit the same heights, it’s still an engaging slice of sci-fi, even if it’s ultimately much less action-packed than the promotional material suggests.
JUNG_E opens with a protracted series of captions, explaining that it’s 2194 and the Earth has been largely evacuated due to pollution and climate disaster. The only problem is that the various orbiting moon stations have devolved into Civil War, leaving those still on Earth perfecting robo-weapons to help end the conflict.

This JUNG_E article contains spoilers.
From Yeon Sang-ho, the director of Train to Busan, JUNG_E is a sci-fi drama set in a dystopian future where the Earth has been ravaged by climate change and is no longer habitable. Humans are forced to abandon the planet for man-made shelters in space, though not every shelter is on board with their proposed leadership. What remains of humanity becomes engulfed in a civil war between the Allied Forces and the Adrian Republic.
But there’s more to JUNG_E than war games and big CG-laden battles. Deep down, Sang-ho’s newest film is about the ethics of AI bred for war and the commercialization of death. JUNG_E tells the story of Captain Yun Jung-yi, a legendary soldier whose failed final mission leads to her brain being cloned by a military AI development company, Kronoid, in an effort to design the ultimate robotic soldier in her image.

Jung_E is a new sci-fi movie written and directed by Yeon Sang-ho starring Kim Hyun-joo, Kang Soo-youn and Ryu Kyung-Soo. It will be available on Netflix from January 2023.
This is a movie by the new sensation in South Korean filmaking, Yeon Sang-hol, director of Train to Busan and the great Hellbound (there will be a second season of this one). This time, we head for science-fiction with a plot that is like Terminator (directly) or Ex-Machina.
The script has plots that have been more or less “borrowed” from others with the structure of an action film with very good rhythm and effects that are… contradictory. Very good some times in rhythm, sound and above all, editing but sometimes the robots (very much inspired by Terminator) seem to be lacking technology.
However, if you want a futuristic, apocalyptic action film with a good script treatment, Jung-e is a good option...

Netflix’s list of films premiering on the streaming service in 2023 isn’t nearly as long as their ambitious 2022 film slate. Yet even with a slimmed-down slate, the lineup of movies arriving this year is impressive and checks off nearly every genre.
The streamer will be dipping back into familiar territory with sequels to Murder Mystery and Extraction. Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, Sam Esmail’s Leave the World Behind, and David Yates’ The Pain Hustlers will premiere this year, as will the film continuation of Luther starring Idris Elba. And two romantic comedies with big-name casts made their way into the lineup: Your Place or Mine (Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon) and A Family Affair.

"Listen closely - be free." Check this out! Netflix has debuted the full trailer for a sci-fi film titled JUNG_E, an impressive new creation from Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho, who also made the zombie sequel Peninsula and the Netflix streaming series Hellbound. Set in the 22nd century, climate change has caused the entire planet to become uninhabitable so humans live within big man-made shelters in space. A civil war breaks out. Jung Yi is the elite leader of the allied forces and a legendary mercenary. She is used for a brain cloning experiment after a mission goes wrong. 35 years later, Jung-yi's daughter is now the head researcher of the JUNG_E project. Starring Kim Hyun-joo as Yun Jung-yi, with Kang Soo-yeon and Ryu Kyung-soo. Some solid footage in here! Seems like this is borrowing sci-fi ideas from RoboCop, Elysium, and Ghost in the Shell mainly, mashing it...

Netflix is staying in the Yeon Sang-ho business, confirming production on his latest creation, The Bequeathed. A suspense drama, it weaves an intricate family history into a subject matter deeply rooted in Korean tradition: family burial grounds.
Hellbound creator and Train to Busan and Peninsula filmmaker Yeon also recently set horror series Parasyte: The Grey at Netflix. For The Bequeathed, he will serve as creator and writer. Min Hong-nam, who has worked closely with Yeon as an Assistant Director on Train to Busan, Psychokinesis and Peninsula, will take on helming duties.
The Bequeathed centers on Kim Hyun-joo’s Yun Seo-ha, a young woman who inherits family land upon the sudden death of her uncle and finds herself mired in strange events that unravel deeply buried family troubles. Kim’s credits include Hellbound, Undercover and Watcher.
The cast also includes Park Hee-soon as the astute police detective Choi Seong-jun, who catches onto the connections between the mysterious events occurring in the town and the burial ground.
Park Byung-eun is Choi’s younger colleague and the squad chief who is gripped by envy and a feeling of inferiority owing to an incident from the past involving Choi.
Ryu Kyung-soo plays Seo-ha’s younger half-brother Kim Yeong-ho who gives her plenty to contend with.
There’s no word on timing as yet, though Netflix will release globally. The Bequeathed is produced by Wow Point and RedPeter Films.

Arcane and Korean supernatural series Hellbound have jumped to the top of Netflix’s new weekly top ten television list.
The animated series, which is based on the League of Legends videogame, was watched by Netflix subscribers for 38.4M hours between November 15 and 21. But it was outgunned by Netflix’s latest Korean thriller, Hellbound, which was watched a total of 43.5M hours in the same period.
Hellbound, which stars Yoo Ah-in and Kim Hyun-Joo, is about a group of supernatural angels appearing out of nowhere to condemn people to hell.
It was another big week for foreign-language titles on the streamer with the second season of Colombian telenovela The Queen of Flow being watched for 38.6M hours, beating the second season of Tiger King, which with 30M hours watched was the second top English-language title.
The third season of Narcos: Mexico, which topped the first list last week, is third followed by Maid,...

Hellbound has a stellar script and gorgeous directorial execution from creator Yeon Sang-ho, but those elements would only go so far without a good cast to support the dramatic story. Luckily, the six-part Netflix series has an impressive ensemble to ground its supernatural narrative. Let’s talk about who all of these actors are, and where you might have seen them before—or where you should watch them next…
Yoo Ah-in as Jeong Jin-soo
Hellbound character: Yoo Ah-in plays New Truth cult leader Jeong Jin-soo with disturbing charisma, constantly keeping the characters and viewers on edge as to what his true motives might be. For me, Yoo was the standout performer in a stellar cast.
What to watch next: Yoo Ah-in is a 35-year-old actor who has appeared in a variety of roles prior to his unsettling turn on Hellbound. If you’re looking to see him in another role,...

“Hellbound,” the TV series debut of “Train to Busan” director Yeon Sang-ho, is one of three shows to be showcased in the new On Screen section of the Busan International Film Festival. The festival also announced that its Asian Contents & Film Market will operate in similar fashion to last year in a hybrid format.
The On Screen section is intended to “showcase highly anticipated drama series on Ott platforms as either world premieres or Asia premieres,” the festival said. This “precisely reflects the current state of the market, which is expanding multi-directionally, while embracing the extended flow and value of cinema.”
The two other new shows are “My Name,” from Kim Jin-min (Netflix’s “Extracurricular”), and youth drama “Forbidden,” which was co-directed by Thailand’s Anucha Boonyawatana and Korean-American, Josh Kim.
“Hellbound” and “My Name” are both Korean dramas set to play out on Netflix, while “Forbidden” is an HBO Asia original series.
