After playing the role of James Dalton in the cult-classic film Road House, Patrick Swayze moved on to other career opportunities. Fresh off the action film and moving away from the image Dirty Dancing painted of him, the actor starred in a movie that would change his image in the film industry in the best of ways. The actor joined the cast of Point Break, the film that put Keanu Reeves on the map.

While there is no doubt that the movie turned into a classic, it seems that the filming was not as smooth as many would think. During a behind-the-scenes feature of the film, Swayze talked about what filming the action sequences was like for him. As the actor revealed, there were multiple occasions during filming where he almost died. All because of his dedication to his craft.

We recently ranked the movies of the late, great Patrick Swayze, and the film that came in at number 1 was Kathryn Bigelow's high-octane action pic "Point Break." It's hard to argue with that result: "Point Break" absolutely rules from beginning to end. In Bigelow's 1991 classic, Keanu Reeves plays an FBI agent who goes undercover as a surfer. Sounds silly, right? Well, stick with me. There's a gang of thrill-seeking surfers who moonlight as bank robbers, and Reeves figures he can get close to them by learning to surf. Okay, yes, it does sound silly. And yet, the movie absolutely rules and rips and rocks.
Patrick Swayze plays Bodhi, the very zen leader of the bank robbers who forms a bond with Reeves' character. There's a lot to love about the film, and Swayze's performance is at the top of the list. As it turns out, filming the stunt-heavy "Point Break...

John Leguizamo, Patrick Swayze, and Wesley Snipes portrayed three drag queens in the film To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everthing! Julie Newmar. The road movie follows the three New York City drag queens as they embark on a journey to Los Angeles to compete in the Miss Drag Queen of America Pageant. While all three lead actors gave praiseworthy performances, Leguizamo found the late Swayze difficult to work with during the film.

Leguizamo revealed that he improvised many of his lines in the film, which didn’t sit well with the Road House star. He also added that he and Wesley Snipes got along so well during the film since they were people of color, but didn’t share the same camaraderie with Swayze.

John Leguizamo said during an interview on Andy Cohen’s SiriusXM radio show that it was “difficult” working with Patrick Swayze on their 1995 movie “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.” The cult classic starred Leguizamo, Swayze and Wesley Snipes as three drag queens whose road trip across America to attend a competition in Hollywood is upended when their car breaks down.
“Rest in peace, I love him. He was just neurotic and I’m not … you know, I’m neurotic too but, I don’t know. One cannot underestimate the enormity of Jerry Zucker's "Ghost" when it was released in 1990. In the film, Molly (Demi Moore) and Sam (Patrick Swayze) are a well-to-do couple in New York who are very, very much in love. Despite their closeness, not to mention their sexual chemistry, Sam cannot entirely commit, replying only with "ditto" when Molly says "I love you." When Sam is murdered by muggers, he returns to Molly as a ghost, using a medium named Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg) to communicate. Can Sam figure out the rules of the afterlife in time to express his undying love for Molly?
"Ghost" was made for a modest $22 million, but made over half a billion dollars worldwide. It was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won Oscars for Whoopi Goldberg and Bruce Joel Rubin, its screenwriter. "Ghost" was a juggernaut, and it's unusual that it...

The late, great, Patrick Swayze was taken from us far too soon, but left behind a legacy of phenomenal films, performances, and characters to hold near and dear. Before pivoting into a full-time acting career, Swayze was trained in ballet, ice skating, martial arts, and football. Pairing this with his dazzling good looks and acting prowess allowed him to thrive in a variety of film genres, playing fast-dancing heartthrobs and action hunks in equal measure. He had his professional breakthrough as a dancer with the Disney Theatrical Group before taking on the replacement role of Danny Zuko in a Broadway production of "Grease." This put him on the radar of Hollywood, and he made his film debut as Ace in the 1979 film "Skatetown, U.S.A."

There are a lot cult classics from the 1980s, but Road House stands somewhere near the top. Sure, many of its fans wouldn’t label it as such, since they lovingly, legitimately and unironically adore it. But there’s no use in arguing it belongs in one camp over another or that it is unapologetically everything it sets out to be. But it – and its cult following – couldn’t have happened without a few broken ribs, a don’t-take-no producer and some pervy late-night phone calls to a star’s spouse. Yes, it involves Bill Murray… So, pour some suds and rip some throats because we’re gonna find out: Wtf Happened to this Movie?!

Road House, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, has muscled its way to the top of viewership on Amazon Prime. The reboot was helmed by Doug Liman, and the numbers recorded are a positive sign that even though the film was overlooked for a theatrical release, the power of storytelling is still compelling, even if it is on a small screen.
The choice to go straight to streaming was deliberate on the part of the makers and the studio. Either way, the move paid off, as the film has set a new record.

The 1989 summer movie season might've officially kicked off on Memorial Day weekend with the release of Steven Spielberg's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," but having been a movie-mad 15-year-old kid at the time, I can assure you that May's first adrenalized action spectacular opened a week earlier when Patrick Swayze introduced us to a man named Dalton in the instant s***-kicker classic "Road House." Critics initially wrote it off as a mindless meathead programmer from mayhem merchant Joel Silver, but the aptly-monikered director Rowdy Herrington and the screenwriting duo of David Lee Henry and Hilary Henkin understood their ludicrous assignment and aced it with knowing aplomb. Their unabashed commitment to inherently risible material turned "Road House" into the "Citizen Kane" of bar bouncer movies.

Drawing the attention of film connoisseurs, Jake Gyllenhaal is indeed an undeniably versatile actor, whose portrayal of the character resonates with the viewers on an emotional level. Over the years, the actor has worked in several genres like romance, thriller, dramas, and action, which establishes him as a top-tier name.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House is finally out on Amazon Prime Video and the action film seems to have gotten positive responses. The film, which is the remake of Patrick Swayze’s 1989 classic film of the same name, sees Gyllenhaal face off against UFC champion Conor McGregor as the antagonist, who makes his feature film debut.

When the Road House remake was announced, we all wanted to know who would be taking the lead role, one that helped solidify Patrick Swayze as a marquee star of ‘80s cinema. At one point Rhonda Rousey was attached to a remake, which would have been one hell of a showdown in a fantasy match against Swayze. So, who would win in a Road House fight between Swayze and Jake Gyllenhaal, who stars in Doug Liman’s movie as Elwood Dalton (as opposed to Swayze’s James Dalton)? The victor may be Jake…at least according to Gyllenhaal.
When asked by Collider who would come out on top between the two Daltons of the two Road Houses, Jake Gyllenhaal says he thinks he gets a certain advantage, although Swayze would get the edge if the time was right. “Well, we all know that size doesn’t matter right from that movie,...

Of all the current action stars, there’s likely no current draw with the expertise in fight scenes that Scott Adkins does. Not only has he starred in dozens of low-budget actioners (including the great Undisputed films), in addition to his roles in bigger films like John Wick: Chapter 4, but he also hosts an amazing YouTube show called The Art of Action, where he deconstructs fight scenes in classic movies alongside their original stars. This weekend, like many folks, Adkins decided to watch Prime Video’s Road House remake, and while he had high praise for the movie, he also criticized the use of CGI in the fight scenes.

Patrick Swayze was one of a kind. He’s the only actor I can think of who was as comfortable cutting a rug on the dance floor as demolishing a room full of bad guys with his fists of fury. When he passed away in 2009, we lost an icon who was never really recognized as the legend he is in his time. In the years since many Patrick Swayze movies have become cult favourites, and with a Road House remake due out on Thursday, we decided now would be a good time to pick the five best Patrick Swayze movies.
Red Dawn:
John Millius’s cold war “what if” thriller goes down in the history books as the first-ever PG-13 movie. It was also Patrick Swayze’s first major leading role, with him best known up to this point for a supporting role in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders.

I was never a fan of the original 1989 film starring Patrick Swayze, and a recent rewatch didn’t change that feeling. Thus, this remake of Road House had several elements in its favor: a cast led by one of my favorite actors of today, Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler), as well as the current greatest Portuguese actress, Daniela Melchior (The Suicide Squad); a narrative open to multiple changes for the better; and a significant cultural, technological evolution in the stunts department, which carries much more weight in today’s industry.

As anyone who's seen it will attest, 1989's "Road House" is an odd movie. Starring the inimitable Patrick Swayze as a "cooler" named Dalton who's hired to run security for a small town bar, the film feels so niche, so specific, so delightfully bonkers that you almost can't believe people signed off on pumping millions of dollars into making it. There's an inherent goofiness to that version, even if the characters aren't winking at the audience. In many ways, it's a relic from a different era, and a modern remake of "Road House," like the one now available on Prime Video from director Doug Liman and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, was never going to be able to recapture the original's ineffable magic. I had some fun with the new version, but tonally, it's much darker than the first film.

The second act of the 2024 remake of Road House climaxes with a nasty knockdown fight between UFC fighter turned bouncer Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Knox (UFC fighter turned actor Conor McGregor). Squishy sounds of smacked meat mix with a thumping rock song, like a second rhythm track every time the two ruffians punch each other. Early in the fight, the camera switches to first-person view as Knox batters his opponent before swinging around as Dalton takes his turn. It’s all bathed in yellow light, with the sickly glow cut only by neon beer signs hanging on the walls.
In short, the Road House remake is trash.
But it is wonderful trash, full of cheeseball crowd-pleasing, gnarly action, and some genuine humor. Road House had me cheering and pumping my fist in the air. Well, it would have, had I been watching it in a movie theater full of fans...

Good Morning America co-stars Robin Roberts and Michael Strahan had a somewhat awkward exchange during a televised interview.
Strahan and Roberts appeared on GMA following their absences last week. Strahan was away from the show for a week, possibly to spend time with his family during his daughter Isabella’s chemotherapy.
They returned this week and participated in presenting various news stories, along with interviews, including one with actor Jake Gyllenhaal.
Many of the main GMA stars participated in the segment, including anchor George Stephanopolous and Lara Spencer.
Gyllenhaal spoke about starring in the “reimagined” version of Roadhouse 25 years after the Patrick Swayze original debuted.
During the conversation, Roberts warned Strahan about being “nice” while working alongside her and others at GMA.

Lisa Anne Happaniemi Swayze DePriso, who is commonly known as Lisa Niemi, is an American professional dancer, actress, choreographer, film director, and producer. She has thrived in her various endeavors but her major claim to fame remains her over three-decade marriage to late Hollywood actor and dancer, Patrick Swayze. Niemi and Swayze were a Hollywood power couple who worked together while their relationship lasted. They pursued a dance career together, worked on many movies as a team, and even co-wrote a memoir before Swayze died in 2009. While Lisa Niemi achieved most of her earlier career milestones with her late...

The South by Southwest festival is known for many things. Whether it is the incredible collection of geniuses, the amazing BBQ, or the next big band. But the thing that makes South by Southwest stand out from any other festival is the screenings at the Paramount Theater.
There is nothing like a SxSw premiere at Paramount. The audiences are hyped up and ready to go. You are guaranteed for cheers, screams, uproarious laughter, and the best time. The world premiere of Doug Liman’s reimagining of Road House will go down as one of the most fun SxSw screenings of all time.
It turns out Road House and the Paramount Theater were a match made in heaven. The film, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and featuring the acting debut of UFC legend Conor McGregor, is definitely not gunning for any Oscars but instead possibly the title of the most ridiculous, most fun...

“One, never underestimate your opponent. Expect the unexpected. Two, take it outside. Never start anything inside the bar unless it’s absolutely necessary. And three, be nice.” Those words, uttered by Patrick Swayze’s James Dalton in 1989’s Road House, are the rules to defending a roadhouse, and watching Doug Liman’s remake, you may find yourself wishing that someone had told the filmmakers that a little bit of number three goes a long way, because this nihilistic retooling of Rowdy Herrington’s cult classic is anything but.
In the remake, Jake Gyllenhaal’s former Mma fighter Eldwood Dalton scrapes together a living by scamming amateur fighters who, after stepping into an underground ring with him, automatically back down, as they’re familiar with his violent past. Things start to look up for him when he’s sought out by Frankie (Jessica Williams), who offers to put him up in...

When film fans talk about great on-screen chemistry, one of the first pairings that comes to mind for me is Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in the now-classic, "Dirty Dancing." As Johnny Castle and Frances "Baby" Houseman, the duo are practically radiating with charisma and it's impossible not to fall in love with them throughout the film. It's also a huge testament to their acting abilities, as the pair famously butted heads throughout the production of "Red Dawn," a film they appeared in together three years prior.
"Patrick was playing pranks on me and everybody," Grey said during an episode of "The View" in 2022. "[He was] late and the boss of everybody and it was just, like, macho and I just couldn't take it. I was just like, 'Please, this guy, that's enough with him.'" Grey was the first of the duo cast, and for a time it looked like Billy Zane,...

You remember Road House, right? The 1989 movie where Patrick Swayze is a professional New York City bouncer imported to Missouri to work at the most raucous road house bar in the Show Me State? The kind of film in which the hero does tai chi, reads philosophy and coos Zen koans like “Pain don’t hurt,” and the bad guy utters bon mots like, “I used to fuck guys like you in prison?” (It was a different time.) Direct by the appropriately named Rowdy Harrington, this finely aged slice of...

There are some key differences between the Dalton of Rowdy Herrington’s 1989 cult classic Road House and the Dalton of Doug Liman’s equally boisterous remake. To start, the stoic bouncer’s first name is now Elwood instead of John. He rolls into town — the Florida Keys, not Kansas City — on a Greyhound bus instead of in a new car. This Dalton walks everywhere, wearing down the soles of his cigar brown combat boots with each mile. His swagger is enhanced by a mellow kindness — at one point, a character compares him to Mr. Rogers (with a violent edge, of course).
What hasn’t changed all that much are Dalton’s motivations and his notoriety. When we meet the infamous man, played here with compelling restraint by Jake Gyllenhaal, his face is shrouded by his black hoodie. He saunters into an underground fight club with a menacing determination. The camera trails him,...

“Road House” is an infectiously stylish piece of slumming. It’s a remake of the 1989 Patrick Swayze cheeseball action cult film, and it’s staged with a verve and wit and dynamic grittiness that make the original film look even more rickety than it once did. Doug Liman, the director of the new “Road House,” has always been a gifted maverick, but I still like his earliest films the best. For years now, he has worked hard to make interesting and responsible dramas, but watching “Road House” you can taste how good it must have felt for him to be irresponsible — to give in to his savage B-movie id.
The action in “Road House” is beyond brutal; at moments, it’s vicious. Yet if the movie is far more violent than your average action film, in its slightly crackpot bare-knuckle way it’s also more humane. Liman stages the pulp...

Doug Liman got a standing ovation at the SXSW premiere of his remake of “Road House” — an event that he originally promised he’d boycott.
Festivalgoers chanted his name — “Doug! Doug! Doug!” — at the end of a post-screening Q&a after star Jake Gyllenhaal called out to the director, who was seated among the crowd.
Gyllenhaal first made Liman’s attendance known while introducing the film, saying, “I want to thank our incredible director. He’s in the audience tonight. He’s been a friend for over 15 years, I’ve wanted to work with him for that time, we’re so lucky. He’s so brilliant and this movie is too.”
Of course, Gyllenhaal also made a point to thank the company that Liman’s boycott was meant to target. Before mentioning Liman or his castmates, the actor said, “We have our Amazon folks here, who have been so fantastic,” mentioning...

After saying he would not be attending the premiere of Road House out of protest, Doug Liman is in fact at the SXSW screening of his latest film, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
In January, Liman wrote an open letter voicing his displeasure that Amazon MGM would not be releasing the film in theaters, despite what he said were positive test screenings. He wrote at the time, “Amazon asked me and the film community to trust them and their public statements about supporting cinemas, and then they turned around and are using Road House to sell plumbing fixtures.”
In protest, he wrote that he would boycott the SXSW premiere. But on Friday evening, he was seated in the audience for the film’s debut.

Take it outside, Jake Gyllenhaal — there was already a “Road House 2.” And it was awful.
The Og “Road House” starring Patrick Swayze came out in 1989 and made $30 million at the box office — a nice return on investment back in the day. Naturally, MGM struck while the iron was hot: a scant 17 years later, the studio released a straight-to-dvd sequel, “Road House 2: Last Call” (2006). Exactly 17 more years later, I went straight to Vudu to buy it. I did not get a good Roi on my $9.99.
Look, I knew what I was getting into. Like you, I didn’t realize there was a “Road House 2” until Doug Liman made a “Road House 3.”
Still the only “Road House” to get a theatrical release, the Swayze flick ended up doing most of its damage on home entertainment. The film isn’t well-reviewed — it has a 41 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 36 on...

The Road House remake is fighting multiple bouts as it fights to win over fans of the original, as well as fighting a new lawsuit from the original’s scribe. The film is also in a fight with its distributing studio, Amazon, as director Doug Liman boycotts screenings of the film for being denied any kind of theatrical releasing. The star of the remake, Jake Gyllenhaal, recently weighed in on his director’s stance, saying, “I adore Doug’s tenacity, and I think he is advocating for filmmakers, and film in the cinema, and theatrical releases. But, I mean, Amazon was always clear that it was streaming. I just want as many people to see it as possible. And I think we’re living in a world that’s changing in how we see and watch movies, and how they’re made.”

Doug Liman’s upcoming “Road House” remake features some dramatic departures from its source material, moving the setting from Missouri to the Florida Keys and introducing a UFC-centric backstory for its bouncer protagonist. But no amount of creative changes could fully separate it from the legacy of original “Road House” star Patrick Swayze — something leading man Jake Gyllenhaal understands all too well.
In a post on his personal Instagram account on Sunday morning, Gyllenhaal paid tribute to Swayze and recalled their time working together on “Donnie Darko.” He recalled Swayze’s generosity as a mentor and expressed hope that the late actor would enjoy his new take on “Road House.”
“I’ve been thinking back about my time working with Patrick on ‘Donnie Darko,’ and rewatching this great man in the original ‘Road House’ plus so many other films. I’ve never stopped being a fan,” Gyllenhaal wrote. “He...

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

Four decades after its release, director Francis Ford Coppola took to Instagram on Thursday to share audition tapes from his 1983 film, The Outsiders.
The film, based on the 1963 novel by S.E. Hinton, is known for, among other things, launching the careers of many of its young stars, including Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, Diane Lane, C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon and Emilio Estevez.
In his post on Thursday, Coppola recounted his unique casting process for the endeavor. “We had all the actors together on a soundstage and would alternate different actors reading for different roles,” he said. The process is reflected in the accompanying footage of Coppola’s post, where various actors read lines from characters they did not play. At one point, the clips include several different performances of the line, “Hop the 3:15 freight to Windrixvill.”

When it comes to good looks, charisma, and strong acting chops, Jake Gyllenhaal is the complete package. With a variety of roles and films that have showcased his prowess, Gyllenhaal has proved that he can walk the fine balance between commerical success and critical acclaim.

A Road House remake is coming to Amazon Prime Video later this year, but there's a lot more to it than just your average remake.
Besides a seemingly new plot and new location, the film has also been embroiled in drama in recent months, from casting choices to producers.
Here's everything we know about the reboot of Road House and the drama involved in making the movie.
Why Are They Remaking Road House?
The reason why they decided to remake the 1989 cult classic remains unknown, but talks of the remake have been going on for nearly ten years.
In 2015, Variety reported that Ronda Rousey would be taking on the classic role of the bouncer, previously played by Patrick Swayze.
At the time, MGM was ready to start production in 2016, having already done other cult classic spinoffs, such as the Rocky spinoff Creed.

Amazon turned heads in the entertainment industry when it offered director Doug Liman and star Jake Gyllenhaal a unique choice for their new film Road House: make it for $60 million with a theatrical release, or take $85 million and go straight to streaming. They chose the latter, sparking backlash from fans. So why did Amazon make such a short-sighted offer?
The Road to Streaming: Was Amazon’s Move Ridiculous?
Jake Gyllenhaal – Road House
As per Variety, when Amazon acquired MGM Studios in 2022, industry insiders expected changes in how MGM’s films would be distributed. But they didn’t expect Amazon to push major titles like Road House straight to streaming without a theatrical run. For fans eagerly awaiting the reboot of the cult classic, it felt like a betrayal.

Hollywood loves a bare-knuckle brawl. And the town got a battle royal with “Road House.”
The reboot of the 1989 cult favorite, which launches on Amazon Prime on March 21, sparked a fierce fight behind the scenes over its release. While studio-filmmaker standoffs are not uncommon, this one featured such subplots as the involvement of a notorious private investigator, a producer given the heave-ho, a cameo from Ari Emanuel and a director going scorched-earth. Even more shocking, some of the embarrassing details began to publicly spill out in recent months, culminating with director Doug Liman promising to boycott the film’s premiere at SXSW on March 8.
Despite the drama, the movie is expected to be one of Amazon Prime’s most-watched films this year. So how did things go wrong?

It’s a real case of life imitating art in this exclusive Ghosts promo which will air during the Super Bowl broadcast as Sam (Rose McIver), Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar), and the spirits of Woodstone sit down to watch the 1990 classic Ghost. The film starring Patrick Swayze, Whoopi Goldberg, and Demi Moore seems to enchant the whole group as they get swept up in the technicalities of it all. As they watch the scene in which Goldberg’s Oda Mae slides a penny under the door of Molly’s (Moore) apartment, Swayze’s Sam begins to push the coin up the wall as proof of his presence. “So frustrating, why she not believe husband is ghost?” Thorfinn (Devan Chandler Long) asks in annoyance. Remember the famous pottery scene with Patrick Swayze in Ghost? Demi Moore still has those pots over 30 years on.
You really had to be there to appreciate just what a phenomenon Ghost was in 1990. Almost from nowhere, the mid-budget supernatural romance became the biggest hit of the year, shrugging off some of its more dismissive reviews (Roger Ebert wasn’t a fan) and raking in over half a billion dollars at the box office.
Ghost’s centrepiece was its saucy pottery scene, in which Patrick Swayze’s boyfriend Sam canoodles with his lover Molly (Demi Moore) as she caresses a clay pot into shape. Cut to the Righteous Brothers’ version of Unchained Melody, it was one of those moments that was endlessly parodied elsewhere – perhaps most famously in The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear.
