He was one of thousands of people taken prisoner during General Pinochet's military coup. He was tortured, and was shot more than 30 times. In December 2009, he was given a three-day wake during which hundreds paid their respects, including artists, politicians, and human-rights activists. A funeral was held and his remains were re-interred in Santiago, Chile.
