Sundance is mostly known for movie premiers and film deals, but among the sea of actors, industry folk and free booze (not necessarily in that order), Robert Redford’s legendary festival also dances into the wee hours of the night thanks to the wealth of music options available.
Here are 10 performances that caught our eye — and ear — at the 2019 edition of Sundance.
1. Kathryn Gallagher: A star of Netflix’s “You” and the forthcoming “Jagged Little Pill Musical,” Gallagher performed at the Montage on the opening night of Sundance with a set of moody sad songs that culminated in a jam with Parkland High school shooting survivors. To think that humanity and harmony could come together in a room full of ski parkas and snow boots was one of those truly meaningful moment at Sundance.
2. Chali2na of Jurassic 5: The frontman of beloved hip-hop group Jurassic 5 performed an intimate...

1. William Parker: For Those Who Are, Still (Aum Fidelity/Centering)
I have been an admirer and observer of William Parker for a quarter century, but nothing prepared me for the impact of this three-disc set's final CD, which features an orchestral composition, Ceremonies for Those Who Are Still, which ranks high among the best orchestral music of the 21st century, and I'm including classical composers. In other words, don't cringe while imagining the usual jazz-with-strings hack job. There are moments in Ceremonies for Those Who Are Still -- particularly when the choir is singing Parker's poems of life and loss and creation -- when the grandeur of the year's most fashionable jazz album, Kamasi Washington's The Epic (also a three-cd set) comes to mind, but the difference -- the reason Parker's set ranks much higher -- is that his orchestrations are vastly more contrapuntal, colorful, individual, and just plain daring.

West was a surprise choice for the festival, which hasn’t had the rapper in their lineup since 2008 when he walked onto the stage nearly two hours after his scheduled set time. Though he tried to blame Pearl Jam’s extended set, the crowd united in booing him.

The always epic Bonnaroo — a four-day music and camping festival on a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tenn. — boasts some huge names this year. The festival has just confirmed its headliners will be Kanye West, Elton John, Jack White and Lionel Richie. Watch the festival's teaser video and check out the 125 plus artists on the lineup below. The festival’s thirteenth year, which goes down June 12-15, will mark the surprising return of West, whose headlining set in 2008 turned into a disaster when his Glow In The Dark-themed light show didn’t start until after sunrise. Ye posted an angry rant on his blog blaming Bonnaroo organizers, but it seems that all is now forgiven. This year will mark Elton John and Lionel Richie’s first ever appearance. Tickets go on sale Feb. 22 at noon Est. Here’s the full Bonnaroo lineup: Elton John Kanye West Jack White Lionel Richie Vampire Weekend...

Epa Drummer Billy Martin at the Jazz Festival of San Sebastian in July.
The jazz-funk trio, Medeski Martin & Wood have been together for over 20 years. To celebrate the career milestone, the group — made up of John Medeski on keyboards, Billy Martin on drums and Chris Wood on bass — has decided this would be a good year to work harder than ever.
Since March, the trio has put out two never-released tracks every month exclusively online as part of their “20” project.

This has got to be one of the worst summers on record. Today brings the tragic news that revolutionary axeman Les Paul has died at the age of 94. Paul's life was a full and a joyful one. He continued plugging away at his art through many of his twilight years in a weekly Monday night gig at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York City. I'm terribly sad that I'll never get to catch one of those Les Paul Trio performances now, as I've always meant to. I did have one very special encounter with the legendary guitarist, though.
Back in 2003, I was working at B.B. King's Blues Club & Grill in Times Square (just around the corner from my office at MTV). In June of that year, King himself came to town for a series of private performances to celebrate the club's third anniversary. I worked...
