Over the weekend, David Gordon Green’s legacy sequel The Exorcist: Believer passed a big milestone at the worldwide box office, officially crossing the $100 million landmark.
Worldwide, The Exorcist: Believer has thus far scared up a total of $107.5 million in its 17 days of release, $54.2 million of which was made here in the United States.
For the sake of comparison, Gordon Green’s Halloween Ends, the final part of a trilogy of legacy sequels, finished its worldwide run with $104.3 million last Halloween season.
The reported production budget for The Exorcist: Believer was in the ballpark of $30 million, meaning it’s likely turning a profit in theaters. The catch? Universal spent $400 million acquiring the rights to The Exorcist, so it’s a bit complicated to measure the success of this one.

Director David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer is set to be the first film in a planned trilogy from Blumhouse and Universal, part of a $400 million deal to bring the franchise back to life on the big screen. But after the box office under-performance of Believer, and reviews slamming the film almost across the board, are those original plans still in place?
Last we heard, The Exorcist: Believer will first be followed by The Exorcist: Deceiver, which has already been dated for theatrical release on April 18, 2025. We assumed David Gordon Green would return to direct all three movies in the franchise – much like he did with Blumhouse’s recent Halloween trilogy – but that may not actually end up being the case.
In a new chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Gordon Green casts doubt on those expectations.
THR reports, “Green currently has outlines for the next two chapters of his Exorcist sequel trilogy,...

It was originally announced back in 2021 that HBO Max was developing a “Garbage Pail Kids” animated series, with Danny McBride and David Gordon Green (Halloween, The Exorcist: Believer) co-creating and writing the series for Rough House Pictures.
What’s the latest on that project? Speaking with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gordon Green reveals in a new chat that the planned “Garbage Pail Kids” animated series is still alive.
“Right now, McBride and I are trying to do an animated series on the Garbage Pail Kids,” Gordon Green tells the show. “So we’re working on that and we’ve got some pretty cool ways we can make a naughty animated show, we’ll see if they’ll have us on that one.”
Last we heard, Josh Bycel (“Solar Opposites”) is also writing and co-creating alongside the duo.
It’s interesting to note that the animated series was first announced as a “family-friendly” project,...

The franchise’s first movie in nearly twenty years, director David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer arrived on the big screen over the weekend, but how did it perform?
The legacy sequel, the first film in a planned trilogy of movies, topped the box office here in the United States, scaring up $27.2 million in its debut weekend across 3,663 theaters.
Worldwide, The Exorcist: Believer debuted to $45 million, a number that exceeds the reported $30 million production budget of the new movie. But there’s some fine print to that.
The catch? Universal spent $400 million acquiring the rights to The Exorcist, the studio banking on big box office numbers to make the investment worthwhile. It’s likely they hoped to replicate the success of Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy, but that film debuted to $76 million here in the States back in 2018 – almost three times the US debut of Believer. And Halloween 2018, which cost just $10 million to produce,...

The franchise’s first movie in 20 years, The Exorcist: Believer is now playing in theaters nationwide, the first film in a planned trilogy of legacy sequels from Universal, Blumhouse, and Morgan Creek, and director David Gordon Green (Halloween). The film opened in many theaters last night for Thursday previews, and the first box office numbers have arrived.
The Exorcist: Believer scared up $2.85 million on Thursday night here in the United States, opening last night in 3,050 theaters. It expands to 3,663 theaters beginning today.
Deadline notes that the film is “on its way to a potential high $20M to $30M.”
For the sake of comparison, the well-received Saw X sliced into $2 million last Thursday night, and the film went on to make $18.3 million across its opening weekend. So it’s pretty safe to expect that The Exorcist: Believer will make its way to at least $20 million in the coming days.
The catch?...

This weekend sees just one new wide theatrical release as The Exorcist: Believer hits screens to kick off the month of October in spooky fashion. Director David Gordon Green is following his Halloween model and creating a direct sequel to the original 1973 classic while ignoring the other sequels. That model worked out for the director with 2018’s Halloween as that film managed a solid $76.2 million opening on its way to a $159.3 million domestic total, which helped reinvigorate the franchise. Unfortunately, Green decided to make two more Halloween films after that, and the results were, quite frankly, not good.
The release date for The Exorcist: Believer was originally next week, but if you can believe it, the devil is actually afraid of Taylor Swift as when the release date of her Era’s Tour movie was announced, Blumhouse wisely moved up the release date, vacating their carefully planned Friday The 13th release.

There are myriad talking entry points to “Exorcist: Believer”—David Gordon Green’s latest horror legacy sequel and the follow-up to his “Halloween” trilogy. For one, it’s awful, but it’s also fascinating, chock-full of thought-provoking ideas— impossible to fully disregard even when the film goes off the rails. One finds themselves repulsed by the film and yet captivated by its concepts, both in their originality and how often their bold, sometimes baffling swings miss the mark so wildly.

Whatever one wants to say about John Boorman’s absolutely maniacal and much-maligned Exorcist II: The Heretic, it certainly isn’t unimaginative. By contrast, David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer very much is. The film, written by Green and Peter Sattler, is a mélange of tired normcore horror tropes indistinguishable from any film in the Conjuring universe. It even fails to address the series’s most basic themes in any truly meaningful way beyond a conviction-less “can’t we all just get along” subtext regarding the divide between America’s secular population and religious conservatives.
The film’s cold open in Haiti hints at a unique, voodoo-tinged—that is, non-Catholic—take on the franchise’s fascination with crisis of faith. But Haiti turns out to just be a random place to witness Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom Jr.) struggling to make a very difficult choice between saving his injured wife or his unborn daughter,...

“The Exorcist: Believer” looks to easily claim the No. 1 spot in its box office debut, but that almost wasn’t the case.
Universal and Blumhouse’s supernatural sequel, which is estimated to open to $30 million to $36 million from 3,600 North American theaters, was originally slated for next weekend to coincide with Friday the 13th. But the film moved up a week to avoid the unexpected release of Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” concert film, which is projected to bring in at least $100 million to start… and would have clobbered “The Exorcist” in terms of ticket sales.
Now, “The Exorcist: Believer,” the sixth installment in the legacy franchise, has the benefit of having the weekend to itself, at least in terms of new nationwide offerings. “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie,” “Saw X” and other holdover titles will round out North American box office charts.

David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer leans heavily into Willian Friedkin’s original – and boasts the return of Ellen Burstyn. Hail Satan!
Read an extract of Empire's exclusive The Exorcist: Believer feature from our October 2023 issue below, or see the full piece here.
Having just directed three Halloween films, it’s fair to say David Gordon Green has some understanding of how the human psyche responds to fear. And now, as he speaks to Empire, he is sitting in his editing suite, putting the final touches to The Exorcist: Believer, a sequel to William Friedkin’s original. As Gordon Green’s characters pit themselves against a wily, primally evil satanic force, the director calibrates the balance between believable normality and supernatural horror: that sweet spot which made that 1973 classic the catalyst for a generation’s nightmares.

“After 45 years, the most acclaimed, revered horror franchise in film history is set to reach its epic, terrifying conclusion as Laurie Strode faces off for the last time against the embodiment of evil, Michael Myers, in a final confrontation where only one of them will survive. When the franchise relaunched in 2018, Halloween shattered box office records, becoming the franchise’s highest-grossing chapter and setting a new record for the biggest opening weekend for a horror film starring a woman. Blumhouse Productions CEO Jason Blum teased the end of the “Paranormal Activity” franchise in Locarno, where he will receive the Premio Raimondo Rezzonico for Best Independent Producer.
“It has been enough already. That last ‘Paranormal Activity’ movie was terrible,” he says. “Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin” premiered in 2021, with another instalment currently eyeing a 2023 release.
“With ‘Halloween,’ we only had the rights to three movies, so we said: ‘Halloween Ends’! It ends for Blumhouse, at least. With other things, you just have this feeling it’s time to put them to bed. It would come back if some director I love, like Scott Derrickson, said: ‘I have a great idea for a ‘Paranormal Activity’ movie. But it’s not something I want to do [at the moment].”
He will reunite with “Halloween” star Jamie Lee Curtis, however, who signed a first-look deal with Blumhouse while helmer David Gordon Green will move onto “The Exorcist.
