- Left-handed slide trombonist (hence the name), born into a musical family. Played with the R&B band of Buddy Johnson in the '50s, briefly with Lionel Hampton before joining the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra as trombonist/arranger. Subsequently became musical director for singer Lloyd Price. Latterly led his own band, World of Trombones.
- Survived by his brother Maceo, his children, Jacquelyn, Lamont, and Locksley, Jr. five grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. His son Gregory died before him.
