Left-handed slide trombonist (hence the name), born into a musical family. Played with the R&B band of Buddy Johnson in the '50s, briefly with Lionel Hampton before joining the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra as trombonist/arranger. Subsequently became musical director for singer Lloyd Price. Latterly led his own band, World of Trombones.
Survived by his brother Maceo, his children, Jacquelyn, Lamont, and Locksley, Jr. five grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. His son Gregory died before him.
