Exclusive: Sundance documentary Never Look Away, the directorial debut of actress Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess), has been sold by XYZ to Greenwich Entertainment for all rights in North America, and to Kaleidoscope for all rights in UK.
Both distributors have committed to theatrical releases in the territories. Kaleidoscope will also take over rest of world sales. The film is set to have additional screenings at SXSW this weekend.
The film puts a spotlight on the late, swashbuckling CNN combat camerawoman, Margaret Moth, who risked it all to put the viewer inside the conflict. When a fateful injury got in the way of her appetite for danger and adrenaline, she had a decision to make about her career and survival.
Pic was produced by Matthew Metcalfe of Gfc Films, Tom Blackwell and Lawless, and was written by Metcalfe, Blackwell, Lawless and Whetham Allpress. XYZ Films is executive-producing.

Flying Lotus has directed the experimental comedy Kuso and the Ozzy’s Dungeon segment of the horror anthology V/H/S/99, and next up for the rapper and filmmaker (who is a.k.a. Steven Ellison) is the sci-fi thriller Ash, starring Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad). When González and Paul were cast in the film, Flying Lotus released a statement saying, “We are building something fresh and unique with Ash and having Eiza and Aaron in this world just makes it flames. They are absolute magic makers, brave and equally inspiring. All that to say… We ‘bout to kill this shit.” And apparently they did kill it, because Deadline reports that Amazon’s Prime Video has just secured the international rights to the film in a high-seven figure pact, nearing $10 million. The film is currently in post-production, so we don’t know when Prime Video will be releasing it.

Nine months ago, it was announced that Tessa Thompson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt had signed on to star in Ash, a sci-fi thriller from rapper and filmmaker Flying Lotus, a.k.a. Steven Ellison. Then, two months ago, we learned that Thompson and Gordon-Levitt both had to drop out of the project and were replaced by Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad). Filming on Ash is now underway, with González and Paul in the lead roles – and Deadline has revealed that they’re being joined in the cast by Beulah Koale (Hawaii Five-o), Kate Elliott (The Gulf), and Iko Uwais of the Raid films.
González will be playing a woman who wakes on a far-flung planet to find her crew mysteriously murdered. When a man (Paul) comes to investigate the scene, she must decide if she can trust him or if he’s responsible for her series of unfortunate events.

Ellie Bamber, the rising Brit star recently seen in Willow and The Serpent, is set to play supermodel Kate Moss in upcoming biopic Moss & Freud.
The film comes from writer/director James Lucas — who won the live-action short film Oscar for The Phone Call (starring Sally Hawkins and Jim Broadbent) — and is set to dramatize the period in 2002 when Moss, at the peak of her fame (and then heavily pregnant), chose to sit nude for famed British artist Lucian Freud. It was a decision that deeply impacted and transformed both of their lives (and the painting subsequently sold in 2005 for almost 5 million).
Oscar-nominee Derek Jacobi (Murder on the Orient Express, The Kings Speech) will play Freud. Moss will executive produce with the support of the Lucian Freud Archive.

Turns out Mark Manson, whose self-help bestseller “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck” was adapted into a documentary by Universal Pictures, actually does give a f–k about what people think.
“Seeing myself on screen really dredged up a lot,” Manson told TheWrap. “”It’s funny when you write a book, you get insecure but you get insecure about ideas. When I put out a book, I’m more worried about ‘Does this story make sense? Is my logic solid? Am I referencing the right study?’ Those are the things that I get anxious about.”
“With the film, it’s so much more of an instinctual ‘Oh my God, I hope people like me’ type of insecurity, which I have not felt to this extent since I was like a teenager probably. It’s been interesting to have to confront that again, but I mean, I’ll be fine,...

Despite being involved in a handful of projects (including an early departure from ’21’s Every Breath You Take 2021), it’ll have been a full fifteen years since the last time she signed off on a project. Rain (2001), Sylvia (2003) and Sunshine Cleaning (2008) filmmaker Christine Jeffs began production on her fourth feature in her native New Zealand. A book-to-film adaptation, A Mistake sees Elizabeth Banks take on the complex role of someone who’s had a monkey wrench thrown at them. In the five years since author Mark Manson published “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck,” the self-help book has sold more than 15 million copies, spent 279 weeks on the NY Times Bestsellers list and crossed over in the pop culture sphere.
“It’s honestly just a pleasant surprise,” Manson tells Variety over Zoom in late December, reflecting on the success of the book, which pairs historical anecdotes with his personal tales of teenage apathy and mid-twenties mistakes to illustrate the best way to live a contented life.
“I’ve been hearing prominent people from all over the world — like Aaron Rodgers said it was his favorite book of the offseason and helped him like get prepared after a playoff loss — it’s just crazy stuff,” Manson continues. “It’s just a real pleasure and a joy as an author to see those sorts of things. And it makes my day when it happens.

We Are UK Film hosted a Cannes Market panel today with participants from far and wide speaking about their experiences on international co-productions amid the coronavirus pandemic, and what the future holds for projects that were suspended as well as the disparity in government aid that has been made available.
Producer and former Protagonist Pictures CEO Mike Goodridge recounted how his next film, Oscar nominee Ruben Ostlund’s Triangle Of Sadness, was shut down with about 37% of shooting complete when the crisis hit.
The “massive” independent production, with a budget of about 13M euros, has participation from BBC Films and the BFI as well as Swedish, French and U.S. input. Goodridge called it “a masterpiece of European financing… I’m kind of in awe there are so many partners on this film,” but noted that’s reflected in the story. The book focuses on wealth and income inequality in Europe and the U.S. since the 18th century with a central thesis that inequality...
