If you were in Simi Valley, California, this past Monday night and just wanted to knock down some pins at Harley’s Valley Bowl, then you were probably pretty surprised by what you saw when you walked through the bowling alley’s door: Dave Grohl hopping on stage with Taylor Hawkins’ son, Shane Hawkins, to play a set of classic rock covers with the late Hawkins’ former side project Chevy Metal. Check out the setlist and watch videos of the performance below.
That’s right, Grohl joined the band for an upbeat, uplifting performance, which not only included songs from classic artists like Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, Queen, and more, but also featured additional guest appearances from living rock legends. Jennifer Lawrence brought her comedic chops to Las Vegas. The Oscar-winner attended CinemaCon on Monday evening to promote Sony’s raunchy “No Hard Feelings,” which played to huge laughs at the annual movie theater trade show currently unfolding at Caesars Palace.
Director Gene Stupnitsky praised Lawrence as “a true comedy natural” in the film, which is about two helicopter parents who hire a woman to “date” their introverted 19-year-old son so he doesn’t leave for college as a virgin.
“And this is based on your life, right?” Lawrence jabbed at Stupnitsky, who retorted, “No, it’s actually based off a Craigslist ad.”
She tried again. “But you were a virgin for, like, a crazy long time. You were 26?”
The filmmaker sighed before rolling an extended clip from the trailer. “Jennifer, you’re so hilarious. I wrote this part for you.”

Torn Hearts is actress Brea Grant’s follow-up to her directorial debut, 12 Hour Shift. Here she’s turned her attention to the music industry. And while genre films about the price of fame stretch from The Phantom of the Opera to The Phantom of the Paradise and The 27 Club most of them are set in the world of rock, and frequently heavy metal. The closest I can think to a county-themed one is the Faustian Southern Rock tale Dark Roads 79.

In a better time for the world, we’d all be hitting the karaoke bar tonight to mourn the late great Jim Steinman. This man was more than just the composer behind mega-bombastic hits by Meat Loaf, Bonnie Tyler, Celine Dion, Air Supply, and so many others. He was the patron saint of karaoke singers. His idea of the perfect song was a powder keg giving off sparks, one that anybody could belt out loud. Think of a karaoke anthem — “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad,...

It’s been three decades since Ringo Starr founded his All Starr supergroup and took the stage with some of rock and roll’s biggest luminaries, creating an exceptional legacy of performances of some of the greatest hits of all time culled from Starr’s extraordinary catalog as a solo artist and as Beatle, as well as the All Starr Band members’ substantive songbook.
In celebration of this milestone, and just in time for the holiday season, a new limited-edition retrospective hardcover book titled “Ringo Rocks: 30 Years Of The All Starrs,” will be sold online exclusively beginning Wednesday, December 16 at juliensauctions.com.
This not to be missed commemorative photo memoir features some never-before-seen photos of the All Starr Band’s 30 record-setting years in the spotlight and life on the road, compiled by Henry Diltz and Jill Jarrett (who have followed Ringo Starr’s All Starr career since 1989), as well as...

In many ways, fact-checking a movie about Mötley Crüe is a ridiculous task, especially a film that says right off the bat it is merely “based” on a true story. It’s also a film that breaks the fourth wall and tells the audience that things didn’t happen quite as they’re being presented. The whole thing is also based on a book that bassist Nikki Sixx now claims has at least one story – in which he writes that he “pretty much” raped a woman – was “possibly greatly embellished or made up.

A moment to note the recent passing of Don Grierson, who as an A+R record exec signed Celine Dion, and worked closely with The Beatles, The Jacksons, Tina Turner, Heart, Bob Seger, Gloria Estefan, and Cindy Lauper over a 50 year career. When Norwegian figure skater Sonja Henie zipped into Hollywood, she was a talent the industry had never seen before, or since — a three-time Olympic ladies’ singles champion (a record she continues to hold) whose chipper, if chilly romantic comedy hits kept Twentieth Century-Fox solvent in the build-up to World War II, in part because she phoned up her pal Joseph Goebells to make sure her pictures played in Nazi Germany.
Was Henie a Nazi? No, says Anne Sewitsky’s shiny biopic “Sonja: The White Swan.” Henie was simply an opportunist, and a variety of other expletives depending on who you ask. Take, say, Fox head Darryl F. Zanuck, who here barges into Henie’s backyard to call her a “man-eating nymphomaniac.” That scene stretches credulity, but with a soundtrack that bops between ’80s rocker Billy Squier and the synthesizers that greet the snow queen’s arrival in L.

I don’t think I’m making any kind of grand revelation here by declaring that Sam Elliott rules. For anyone who has grown up on a steady stream of badassery from the grizzled actor, he’s proved himself time and time again to be one of the greatest and most enigmatic performers to ever grace the silver screen, and The Man Who Killed Hitler and then The Bigfoot is the perfect showcase for Elliott’s immeasurable talents. And while you might be expecting something a little more bombastic based on the immediately unforgettable title of Robert D. Krzykowski’s stunning debut feature, his story is more interested in taking the introspective route, resulting in an endlessly engaging adventure that manages to pull a few heartstrings along the way.
Ultimately, how Krzykowski frames his narrative is reflected directly in the character of Calvin Barr (Elliott), who, as you can imagine,...

Billy Squier is an American rock musician that’s had a lot of great hits throughout his career starting in the 1980’s. He’s moved around between a few bands in his time but hit the jackpot when he came out with the song The Stroke. The song sounds inherently dirty when you really think about it but it’s popularity has been through the roof for a while now. It’s been prominently featured in film and on TV either in it’s original form, re-mastered, or as a backdrop for another song. No matter how it’s been used The Stroke is immediately recognizable

Electronic music maestro Giorgio Moroder is a hit maker, megaproducer and all-around cool guy. An icon of ‘70s disco and dance era, Moroder stepped back in time to the ‘20s when he composed a unique restoration and edit of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis in 1984. Moroder’s cut featured color tinting, special effects, subtitles, a faster frame rate and an electronic soundtrack with music by Pat Benatar, Billy Squier, Adam Ant and Freddie Mercury. Website Open Culture recently highlighted the film and you can watch it below if you're curious. Lang’s influential film about a class struggle in a dystopian society has timeless appeal, so while Moroder’s blend of pop and art doesn’t exactly fit perfectly with Lang’s vision, it is a truly...

Can Robert Berens please be the new writer for all of Supernatural?
A recent addition to the Supernatural writing team, Berens is responsible for the latest episode, Captives, and he’s more than outdone himself, combining excellent characterisation with both humour and pathos (the three perfect ingredients). Seriously, just about everything about this episode makes me really happy. Where do I even start?
The episode begins with a lengthy and heart-wrenching flashback to everything unfortunate and miserable that has happened in the past few seasons (thanks, Supernatural), after which we zoom in on Dean, listening to music alone in his bedroom. It’s a shot whose cinematography emphasises loneliness as Dean listens to Billy Squier’s Lonely is the Night, (which was prominently used at the beginning of season four,...

“When a kid’s getting bullied and shoots up his school and they blame it on Marilyn / And the heroin, where were the parents at?” said Marshall Bruce Mathers III at twenty-eight years old, a fresh-faced hypercritical political observer with a pen and a supersonic tongue, but still a “ten year old degenerate grabbing on [his] genitals” at heart.
Thirteen years later, after terrorising Moby for still making music at thirty-six, it seems a lifetime of staring outwards has caught up on Eminem – in ‘The Marshall Mathers LP 2’, he is more self-aware and diffident than ever. In a moment of stark honesty during ‘Asshole’, he confesses “It’s apparent I shouldn’t have been a parent, I’ll never grow up”. If self-reflection is his new outlet of expression, what does this mean for the music? Is the second king of controversy (the worst thing since Elvis Presley) a soft touch?...

Eminem fans were treated to an early Halloween surprise on Oct. 29 when Slim Shady’s newest album, ‘The Marshall Mathers LP 2′, leaked six days before its official release date. Packed full of introspective lyrics, energetic collaborations, and both hip-hop and classic rock throwbacks, ‘MMLP2′ proves that Em’s legacy is still as powerful as ever.
It’s been over 13 years since Eminem, 41, released his Grammy Award winning standout album The Marshall Mathers LP. Packed with a mix of hits including “The Real Slim Shady” and — arguably Em’s most famous hit — “Stan,” Mmlp has long since earned its spot in the Eminem canon as one of the greats. So naturally, calling an album The Marshall Mathers LP 2 is going to lead to a lot of hype and pressure for the tow-headed star. Eminem debuted his long-awaited music video for his new single "Berzerk," on Monday (Sept. 9) after his bizarre intro on Espn Saturday night (Sept. 7), and the clip boasts a big roster of cameos.
The video features Eminem -- real name Marshall Mathers -- rapping and generally Dgaf-ing with spray paint and his own style of dancing with guest appearances from Kid Rock, Kendrick Lamar, track producer Rick Rubin, and members of Slaughterhouse. Interspersed throughout the video is vintage footage of Billy Squier -- whose "The Stroke" provides one of the samples for "Berzerk -- as well as footage of riots and violent fights.
And is it just us, or does Eminem defy all the laws of nature and just never age? The 40-year-old rapper looks exactly the same as he did when he first broke out in '97.

Eminem is kickin' it old school. Just one day after teasing his new single, "Berzerk," in a commercial for Beats by Dre during the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, the rapper dropped the whole darn thing on Monday. And if you're fans of such '80s hits as Billy Squier's "The Stroke" and the Beastie Boys' "Fight for Your Right (to Party)," well, you've come to the right place as the tune samples from both. Of course, hearing a bit of the Beasties isn't a total shock seeing how the song is produced by Rick Rubin, who had a huge hand in that group's success. After being teased via a Beats by Dre commercial that debuted during Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards, Eminem dropped "Berzerk," the lead single off his forthcoming "MMLP2." Take a listen below and let us know what you think of Slim Shady's comeback anthem -- which sounds like the Shady you used to know and love -- below.
Rick Rubin produced the single, and given his trailblazing work with the Beastie Boys, it's not that surprising to hear overtones of the Beasties on "Berzerk." For those keeping track, the sample that's used is Billy Squier's "The Stroke."
Eminem seemingly calls Khloe Kardashian ugly on the track -- "Woke up in that Monte Carlo, with that ugly Kardashian Lamar O / Sorry, yo we done both set the bar low." That's unfortunate timing, given some seriously troubling allegations that have plagued the couple in recent days.

I didn’t go to Reading, or Leeds, this year. I haven’t woken this morning in a field. No, I’ve woken this morning surrounded by empty cans wearing pyjama bottoms and a Converge T Shirt. Most painful of all about my not having gone to Reading, or Leeds, most heartachingly painful of all, is that I didn’t see The Cure play a majestic three hour set.
Watching them from the comfort of my bed, attired in the aforementioned, on BBC iPlayer is not the same. Hangover breakfast of champions or not; gammon steak and scrambled egg (I like protein) splashed with mustard and red sauce. Chased of course with a coffee and a cigarette.
However, by way of compensation I have been gifted with something this week. That something is Wild Nothing’s sophomore effort Nocturne. How this is compensation will be made clear soon.

As a kid growing up in Houston, the hot and humid summers were usually spent indoors reading and watching science fiction movies on television. The Paramount Theatre's Sci-Fi Week runs from Tuesday, August 14 through Sunday, August 19 and features several personal favorites including Forbidden Planet, The Day The Earth Stood Still, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Planet of the Apes. Also screening next Tuesday through Thursday is the classic silent sci-fi film Metropolis with the 1980s soundtrack from composer Giorgio Moroder featuring songs by Pat Benatar, Billy Squier, Freddie Mercury, Bonnie Tyler, Adam Ant and more. Screening times and ticket information available on the Paramount website.
Seattle-based film group The Sprocket Society recently started an Austin chapter and is hosting an inaugural screening on Sunday, August 12, 2:45 pm, at Alamo Drafthouse Ritz. For their first screening the Austin chapter is featuring a program of shorts including the silent screen work...

Rating (out of five): ** if you’ve not seen the original /*** 1/2 if you have
Giorgio Moroder’s “restoration” of Metropolis probably began with noble enough intentions. Inspired by the music video’s ascendancy, Moroder decided to resurrect Fritz Lang’s 1927 sci-fi masterpiece for a new generation. His rehabilitation included cutting out most of the intertitles (replacing a few with subtitles), retinting and colorizing the images, and – most significantly – juicing the film with a contemporary soundtrack, replacing the crusty old score with far out offerings from Freddy Mercury, Billy Squier, Loverboy, Adam Ant, Pat Benetar, and Bonnie “Total Eclipse of the Heart” Tyler.

In this week's "Even More" section there is a link to a Tom Cruise Blu-ray Collection, which includes Collateral, Days of Thunder, Minority Report, Top Gun and War of the Worlds for only $34.99. It's a good price and worth a look either for you or perhaps as a Christmas present for someone else. However, until November 17 you can buy it at Fry's for only $19.99! Get on it!
Also, I have two Criterion titles I'm recommending this week, but instead of using the Buy Now links next to each you may want to head over to Barnes and Noble where their 50% off sale is still on for I believe another week. Unless I am mistaken it ends on November 21. So, get to shopping!

Today? Today is a very good day. News has come that one of the single greatest film masterpieces ever is on its way to Blu-ray high definition, and it has us grinning from ear-to-metallic-ear!
Harry over at Ain't it Cool just broke the glorious news that Kino will be releasing Fritz Lang's highly influential landmark film Metropolis onto Blu-raylater this year.
For thousands of people around the globe, Moroder’s Metropolis was their introduction to the films of Fritz Lang, and many have been waiting to see this film re-released -- with improved sound and image quality. This is it!
This “version” of Metropolis comes with music by Freddie Mercury, Pat Benatar, Bonnie Tyler, Moroder, and many other famous 1980s acts, and we’re confident that interest is very high on this title. Metroopolis is Kino Lorber’s all-time best selling film – by a wide margin – and just the...

Today is MTV’s 30th birthday, and the good folks at EW.com have asked me to say a few words. Turn up your computer speakers and listen to our story, won’t you?
As you’re aware, MTV premiered 30 years ago today. As you’re aware if you’re old, MTV took a while to go nationwide. The prevailing wisdom, as I recall it, was that such a thing could never catch on. The idea of a 24-hour music-video channel was tantalizing for the youth of the early ‘80s, and the wait for the cable systems in St. Louis to carry it was excruciating.

The Larry Crowne soundtrack. Bleeeeuuuurrrrrgggghhh bleurgh bleurgh bleurgh bleurgh bleurgh blllllleurrrrrrrggggggghhhhhh… pant pant pant… Bleeeeuuurrrghhhhh… oh Jesus… no… no more… Bleeeeeeeeeeuuuurr gagagagagagaEEEEUUURRRGHHHHH. No, that’s not the sound of a group of tourists two hours after drinking Mexican tap water, it’s the sound of some poor bastard who’s just bought the Larry Crowne soundtrack album, and made it past, ooh, say, track three.
‘Inoffensive’ is the type of adjective that another reviewer might use to describe the relentless Mor of this Ost, and that would be wrong. The Larry Crowne soundtrack is as offensive as jeggings, as ugly as a Wal Mart, as nourishing as corn syrup and as good-hearted as a life-insurance salesman. If Jack Lemmon’s character from Glengarry Glen Ross were trying to sell you a five-foot-wide patch of rock-covered land on the outskirts of Tripoli, this is the kind of music he might put on in the background,...

The cast of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" will reunite to party at the Guys Choice Awards. Jeff Spicoli would most definitely approve.
Sean Penn, Judge Reinhold, Robert Romanus, Brian Backer, Forest Whitaker and director Amy Heckerling will be present at Spike TV's Guy Choice Awards to witness "Fast Times" being inducted into the Guy Movie Hall of Fame, according to Inside TV.
Hopefully, they'll play Sammy Hagar's title song as they approach the stage. Or at least Billy Squier's "Fast Times (The Best Years of Our Lives)."
Bummer, though, that Stacy and Linda won't be able to make it, as Jennifer Jason Leigh is in New York starring in a Broadway production of "The House of Blue Leaves" and Phoebe Cates is unavailable.
We wonder if Phoebe still has that red bathing suit? We wonder that quite often, actually...

Some easily hummable "American Idol" news on Season 10, past winners and more ...
The new "Idol" judges have been at work for just a couple of weeks, and there are already rumors of feuding between Jennifer Lopez and host Ryan Seacrest. A Lopez rep pooh-poohs the reports, saying Lopez and Seacrest are getting along just fine. [Fancast]
Speaking of the judges, dawg, early word from the set is that Randy Jackson has done more than just take Simon Cowell's traditional spot at the right of your TV screen. He's also being "more blunt and bottom line" with prospective contestants. [E! Online]
Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks is launching a fragrance this week. It's called Because of You and has notes of "clementine, white imperial currant and orange blossom," among other scents. [Wwd via USA Today]
Reigning "Idol" champ Lee DeWyze tells his fans that a debut single is expected "soon" -- although he doesn't have a specific date...

Hard rock underwent some changes as the ’70s gave way to the ’80s, and as the mythopoetic pretensions of the prog era gave way to the instant gratification of corporate rock. Even Led Zeppelin—formerly dedicated to delivering arcane blues-rock from remote, Tolkien-esque mountaintops—adjusted its sound to accommodate the relentless wallop and sheen that dominated the age of Boston and Van Halen. And where Zeppelin left off, Billy Squier stepped in. A veteran of the Massachusetts music scene who made an impact in the cult power-pop acts The Sidewinders and Piper, Squier went solo in 1980 with Tale Of ...

Bill Aucoin, who discovered Kiss and helped build the rock group into a musical and merchandising juggernaut, died June 28 at Aventura (Fla.) Hospital and Medical Center of complications from prostate cancer surgery. He was 66.
A former television cinematographer, Aucoin met Kissin 1973 in New York and helped transform the makeup-wearing, fire-breathing quartet into a moneymaking machine. He financed the band's first tour on his personal American Express card when money was tight, but he was well rewarded when the band's popularity exploded in 1975 with the hit live version of "Rock and Roll All Nite."
"He was the fifth Kiss," said drummer Peter Criss, who had Aucoin serve as the best man at his second wedding. "If it wasn't for Bill, there would be no Kiss."
After parting with Kiss during the early 1980s, Aucoin managed Billy Squier and Billy Idol.

The newly-restored 153-minute version of Fritz Lang's Metropolis is among the treats that will play at the 14th annual Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal. As many have already heard, the complete version of the film was discovered in 2008 at the Museo del Cine in Buenos Aires, including about 25 minutes (1257 shots) of footage that was thought lost. It will screen July 28 in the 3000-seat Wilfred Pelletier theatre in Place des Arts. The silent film composer Gabriel Thibaudeau is writing a new score for the feature, which he will perform live at the screening with a 13-piece orchestra.

We're finally found an American Idol sponsorship more jarring than the now-commonplace ones (The Judges, brought to you by Vitamin Water on Tap; The Contestants, brought to you by At&T)...it's Siobhan's Dad, brought to you by Coca-Cola! It's been a long time since Mickey Avalon was passing out demos at Hollywood nightclubs and scrambling to secure a deal with MySpace Records. If you slept on his self-titled 2006 debut — an insanely profane, gutter-hugging punk rap manifesto featuring the classics "Jane Fonda" and "So Rich, So Pretty" — might I suggest you boost a copy from the cut-out bin of your local used record store? (It's what the old Mickey might have done.)
A few years removed from his more sordid days of street chaos, Avalon has been grinding away on his second album for the past few years, recording more than 70 tracks with a bevy of bold-faced names and a couple of unlikely hotshot producers. Calling in from Los Angeles on Thursday (don't worry, Governator — Mickey's mom was driving the car), Avalon gave a preview of what fans can expect from the tentatively titled Electric Gigolo, which is penciled...

As you have seen, we’ve been closely following the release of DJ Hero, the next step in rhythm gaming from Activision. Today is no exception as the company has now released the full 93 song set list for the game. While all club styled mixes, remixes and mashups, DJ Hero boasts one of the most varied collection of artists in any Hero franchise release.
With everything from the Jackson 5 to 2Pac, Daft Punk to Queen and everything in between, that variety of DJ Hero’s playlist is unmatched, as long as you like mashups and remixes. If you are a musical purist to the extreme, this game isn’t really what you’d be looking for.
In addition, the game will feature 10 tracks where players can plug in their Guitar Hero guitar and play alongside their friend on the DJ Hero turntable for a true real time rock / dance mashup.
