Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss “Babylon’s” finalized acting campaigns.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday, general audiences are getting ready to see “TÁR,” the junket press was afforded an opportunity to return to Wakanda (Forever) with the premiere of the “Black Panther” sequel, and Paramount’s FYC website caused a great disturbance in the Force. On Thursday morning, we awoke to news that “Babylon” star Brad Pitt would campaign in the Best Actor category for the film, while presumed lead Diego Calva would travel through awards season in the supporting lane. It was a surprise that made some sense: Best Actor is so wide open I feel comfortable not only predicting a nomination for Tom Cruise but also entertaining the notion...

It’s not officially awards season until we get our first set of nominations, and that finally happened Tuesday with the Gotham Awards. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the nominations and what they mean, if anything, for the Oscars.
In the Gothams’ two gender-neutral acting categories, Best Actor frontrunner Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) and three Best Actress favorites Cate Blanchett (“TÁR”), Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”) and Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) made the lead cut, along with another Best Actor contender, Colin Farrell, but for another film, “After Yang” (“The Banshees of Inisherin” was ineligible but was nominated for international feature). But the more interesting slate is in supporting, where there are double “Women Talking” nominees but perhaps not the duo most would expect. Jessie Buckley and Ben Whishaw got in, while Claire Foy missed out. A sign of things to come?...

There wasn’t any Doom, but there was a feeling of dread in one of the key characters from the classic Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
Ke Huy Quan, who appeared in the 1984 film as 11-year-old Chinese orphan “Short Round,” was apprehensive as he was about to meet Harrison Ford for the first time in many years at Disney’s annual D23. He wondered: would Ford remember me? After all, it had been decades since they were last together, he’d become an adult, and the one foe that can’t be defeated is Father Time.
Quan told New York Times writer Kyle Buchanan how it all went down. As you can tell from the picture, it was a special moment.

One of the most heartwarming stories that had gone viral fairly recently was the unexpected reunion between the two stars of the 1984 classic, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Harrison Ford and Ke Huy Quan. Quan had made a monster comeback with this year’s abstract martial arts dramedy, Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. Quan will now be in the new Disney+ series, American Born Chinese. As he was at Disney’s D23 to promote the show, this was when he ran into an old friend.
Kyle Buchanan of the New York Times posted to Twitter a preview of an article he has coming out about the wholesome reunion and shared Quan’s story of how the reunion came into fruition.
Quan told him,
“Oh my God. Let me tell you this. We were at the D23 event and I was told Harrison was gonna be there. We’re...

By and large, modern superhero cinema is unsurprisingly IP-driven. Marvel and DC superheroes come with built-in fan bases both recent and long-standing — ones comprised of multiple demographics — and appeal to families and solo viewers alike. As Robert Downey Jr.'s essential turn as Tony Stark proved, though, the casts of these films matter. As we previously covered, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has added Harrison Ford to its roster, and DC has endured its share of star turns and casting woes. In "Black Adam," the Warner Bros. tentpole has Dwayne Johnson, who promises to change the hierarchy of the DC Extended Universe forever and, potentially, the company's box-office fortunes (though our "Black Adam" review may disagree).
Johnson is one of the few actors who can open a non-superhero blockbuster. With "Black Adam," he is testing his mettle in modern Hollywood's most tried-and-true genre. Thrillingly, in "Black Adam" Johnson is surrounded by...

Ke Huy Quan has been receiving Oscar buzz for his performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, but during a recent visit to the Warner Bros. lot he returned to the scene of one of the most beloved projects from his past when he stopped by the soundstage where “The Goonies” was filmed.
“First time back to Warner Brothers’ stage 16 in 36 years,” Quan wrote in the caption for some photos from his visit that he posted on Instagram.

Ke Huy Quan took a break from his continued “Everything Everywhere All at Once” awards tour to visit the Warner Bros. soundstage where he filmed scenes for “The Goonies” over three decades ago. It turned out to be an emotional reunion, as Quan revealed he had not been to the film’s set in the just-over 36 years since “The Goonies” first opened in theaters.

The Oscar race for Best Supporting Actor is one of the most uncertain of the year. Paul Dano (“The Fabelmans“) led initially, but once the film premiered his co-star Judd Hirsch started to take some of his momentum, and an actor from a different film took over the lead in Expert journalists’ odds: Ke Huy Quan in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” It would be only the second win in the category by an Asian actor (following Haing S. Ngor for “The Killing Fields”), and the first for an actor of Vietnamese descent.
