It’s not clear what’s going on at the start of Crumbs, except for the info imparted via opening titles, that we are in some sort of post-apocalyptic world, where mankind has lost the urge for survival. A little hunchbacked man treks across a fantastical, extraterrestrial-seeming landscape, finds a plastic Christmas tree, spots a uniformed Nazi in gas mask and sparkly Mickey Mouse ears, and takes to his heels. This is the first Ethiopian surreal science-fiction movie.
Things don’t get a great deal clearer. The little man, Candy (Daniel Tadesse) is a scavenger of some sort, living with his woman Birdy/Sayat (Salem Tesfaye) in a decrepit bowling alley, whose machinery starts to work again by itself, at the same time as the rusting spaceship hovering low in the sky starts to power up again. He decides he must go and consult the witch, and then travel to find Santa Claus who,...

Get ready fashion die-hards—just one more day until Nyfw begins! And to start things off right, we're taking you behind-the-scenes with Creatures of the Wind design duo Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters. E!'s own Alicia Quarles and Women's Wear Daily's executive editor Bridget Foley teamed up this morning to talk all things fashion with the hot designers on Google+ Hangout. So what can we expected to see on the runway? "The collection's called Fata Morgana, which is a type of superior mirage that causes things on the horizon to be flipped and float above the skyline," Peters dished. "For us it was about the idea of the things beyond our horizon flipped, so it's really about...

The Bradford International Film Festival is typically an underground-friendly fest. This year appears to be no exception with two very special experimental film retrospectives, as well as a few modern underground-type flicks.
The 19th annual Biff will roll on April 11-21 at several locations around Bradford and Leeds in England, including the National Media Museum, Hebden Bridge Picture House, Hyde Park Picture House and other venues.
Biff is hosting a tribute to Stan Brakhage this year by screening the prolific filmmaker’s magnum opus, Dog Star Man, as well as a selection of his short films, from 1963′s legendary Mothlight to 1994′s Black Ice. There’s also going to be an epic-sized tribute/retrospective of experimental films from Austria, a country with a proud avant-garde filmmaking tradition that’s typically overlooked.

Stemple Pass
Dir. James Benning
Part of a larger project that includes other films, a book and an installation, Stemple Pass hones in on Ted Kaczynski, infamously known as the "Unabomber", one of the two main subjects of the broader work. The other is Henry David Thoreau (author of Walden). Initially the project began without an artistic intent: James Benning built two cabins replicated after the (surprisingly similar) ones that Kaczynski and Thoreau lived in. He was eventually driven to explore the obsessions of these two figures (as well as the filmmaker's own), ultimately drawn into these multiple approaches.
Consisting of four static shots, each of a different season (though not presented linearly so as to avoid easily applied poetic connotations of "this represents this" parsing), the film spends two hours watching the replicate cabin, seen in the bottom right of the frame, overwhelmed by the surrounding nature. For much of the film,...

By my first afternoon in Rotterdam I had found an image that positively vibrated out of the screen at me. A dark doorway, seen obliquely in an empty frame, contained by stolid, lifeless rural architecture, cloaked in a miasma conjured from a combination of haze, a fogged lens, old film stock, and blown out whites from an open aperture. It is from Letter, a short work, not so much a documentary but a fragment drawn carefully and gently into immanence by Sergei Loznitsa, conjured from footage he shot, the program notes tell me, over ten years ago “at a psychiatric institution in a forgotten corner of Russia.” But even with no text or voice over to place and set this artifact resurrected (or projected), and a soundtrack achingly follied and sneakily dubbed, the sense of lostness, malady and asynchronicity is prevalent. Some persons, mostly old and bumbling, pursue the frame...

Did you know Fata Morgana, an unusual and very complex form of mirage, which is seen in a narrow band right above the horizon, was given the name of Morgan le Fay that is said to be King Arthur’s half-sister? I must admit, I didn’t know. Well, I’m telling you this because Marion Cotillard has [...]
