The Grammys love Jack Antonoff, but so far mostly for his work with other artists like Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey and St. Vincent. He has won Producer of the Year, Non-Classical, for the last three years in a row. That ties him with David Foster, Quincy Jones and Pharrell Williams as the second most awarded individual in the category (Babyface leads with four career wins). But so far his own band Bleachers hasn’t gotten on the academy’s radar. Can their latest self-titled release, which dropped March 8, earn them recognition?

Once upon a time on the West Coast, two bands were plotting a revolution.
Well, really, it was one musician concocting a grand plan to dismantle the record industry, bring back a massive revival of 1960s psychedelic rock, and achieve total world domination. His name was Anton Newcombe, and this singer/multi-instrumentalist fronted a San Francisco group blessed with one of the greatest names of any 1990s band: the Brian Jonestown Massacre. The only thing better than their moniker was the music itself, which replicated the vintage, acid-soaked sounds of...

October 6, 1927, was a pivotal date in the history of Cinema. It was on this date that Warner Bros. released “The Jazz Singer,” the feature film that marked the end of the silent movie era and brought a whole new dimension to the world of video editing: sound.
Today, the music, dialogue and foley that sound editors add to our favorite films are as integral to the experience as the images and script themselves. From Hollywood blockbusters to low-budget short films, sound drives stories forward. It sets the emotional tone, aids in making actors’ performances feel more genuine, and ensures audiences hear exactly and feel exactly what filmmakers want them to hear and feel throughout their viewing experience.
In short, sound editors turn the muffled dialogue and noise recorded by a boom mike and elevate it into the crisp, emotive audio that brings visual storytelling to life.

The Dandy Warhols have unveiled a new single called “Danzig With Myself,” featuring a guest spot by Pixies frontman Black Francis. The song appears on the alt-rock band’s upcoming album, Rockmaker, out March 15th.
Musically, the song has a Pixies vibe, with Francis contributing a fuzzed-out guitar track. Of the song’s title, Dandy Warhol singer Courtney Taylor-Taylor explained, “It started with a riff that either sounded like Misfits or Danzig and then got slowed down.”
He continued, “Over time, it became the working title that was just too good to replace.”
Taylor-Taylor delivers the verses in a deep sing-talk vocal, although not quite as deep as Glenn Danzig, and the dark lyrics serve as another tribute of sorts to the horror-punk icon. The tune starts out with the lines, “Some days it’s just so obvious/ Some days insidious/ But half the people alive today are/ Are fucking idiots.

The Dandy Warhols will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their breakthrough album, Thirteen Tales of Urban Bohemia, later this month with what they’re calling a “full production concert film” captured at Portland, Oregon’s Wonderland Ballroom.

What goes on tour stays on tour – unless it's caught on camera. With classic Beatles comedy A Hard Day's Night returning to UK cinemas on July 4, and Metallica's triumphant set at Glastonbury reminding us how far they've come from darker days, now feels like the time to look back on some of the movies that prove that maxim.
Below, we catalogue the craziest music movies ever made, helpfully divided into four distinct categories of weirdness.
Bad Behaviour
Beginning with its 70-something subject attacking the director with his walking stick, Beware Of Mr Baker (2012) introduces a man – ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker – so bellicose he's made the whole world his practice kit. Like Brick Top from Snatch with even greater anger-management issues, Baker is a bitter old codger who "communicates more through his drums than his words", according to his long-suffering daughter. He certainly doesn't mince the latter.

Getting news on the Veronica Mars movie project is all about being on the internet at the right time but we’ve got some fun new details on the evolving film.
In case you needed an update, the Veronica Mars Movie Kickstarter campaign is a little over a week old and has raised over $3,750,000, thanks to over 57,000 backers. The question now is not if the film will raise double of its initial budget of $2 million, but how much more can it raise? $5 million? The pace has slowed down but who knows what Rob Thomas, Kristen Bell and the rest of the crew have in store. It’s seriously become the most addictive telethon ever.
The response has been overwhelming for everyone involved with Vm and numbers are being crunched because creator Rob Thomas has already started talking about whether or not this movie will be the last we’re going to see of Veronica.

The 'Veronica Mars' movie plot is outlined; hopes for Krysten Ritter and Francis Capra, among others
"Veronica Mars" creator Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell (pictured together above) took part in a Twitter chat Thursday (March 21) to answer fan questions about the upcoming "Veronica Mars" movie, which has over $3.75 million raised on Kickstarter.
Here are some highlights:
Question: Will Vinnie and Cliff be back? Please say yes.
Thomas: That's the plan. I hope they both say yes.
Question: Will the #veronicamarsmovie still have the same snarky humor as the show did? And Will Weevil be making an appearance?
Thomas: Yes to the first. And I sure hope Francis/Weevil will be in it. I'm planning on it.
Question: Is there a script for the movie yet? If not, do you know at this stage what direction it'll take?
Thomas: Movie is outlined. First 40 pages are written. I definitely know the direction.
Question: Will veronica be dating anyone? or married?
Thomas: She will open the movie with a boyfriend.

A long time ago, we used to be friends, but I haven’t thought of you lately at all…

For others, that’s the beginning to the theme song of a cult classic TV show that has never left their thoughts: Veronica Mars, the sophisticated teen drama/mystery serial starring Kristen Bell (Showtime’s House of Lies) as a strong and spirited new-model Nancy Drew whose adventures explored and exposed the rotten,...

For those readers who keep up with the latest goings on in Atlantic City through the superb Boardwalk Empire, you may or may not know that the spacey, expansive theme song is performed by the Brian Jonestown Massacre (Bjm). It is a fitting combination. Band leader and dictator-for-life Anton Newcombe has endured as many tough times, family schisms, peaks, troughs and fights as one Nucky Thompson.
As versatile as a chameleon and obstinate as a rhino, Bjm have spent the past two decades altering perceptions and influencing contemporaries in a subversive and relentless fashion. Afforded a lot less fanfare than they deserve, the group define just what “indie music” was coined to denote; the confusion of constant self-financed tours, experimentation, adherence to an artistic modus operandi and even temporary homelessness. Once you delve into their sprawling discography, you may never find your way back. With any luck, this article will...

Music documentaries are a genre unto their own – sometimes they give you a glimpse behind the scenes of your favourite band, and sometimes they’re about someone you’ve never heeard about who become your favourite band.
Following great acclaim at Sundance and festivals around the world, Searching For Sugar Man comes to UK cinemas this month and definitely falls into the former category. You’ve probably never heard of Sixto Rodriguez – he was meant to be the new Bob Dylan, but he quickly disappeared back into obscurity. Yet not in South Africa – where he went on to be bigger Elvis. All this success went completely unknown to Rodriguez himself, and the film is the remarkable story of two South African fans trying to find out what happened to their hero.
To mark its release, here’s a rundown of the Top 10 Best Music Documentaries of all time:

One of my earliest observations about documentary films is they’re especially great for niche audiences. People who may not regularly watch docs will check out a film about their favorite band, a hobby they’re into or an issue they’re strongly in support of. Often those are the only audiences for certain docs that aren’t very well made or that don’t find a universally appealing angle. Meanwhile the greatest music docs, for instance, are those that are riveting regardless of one’s usual favor for The Band, Justin Bieber, The Dandy Warhols or A Tribe Called Quest. There’s a new music documentary that has to similarly transcend individual tastes because it involves and mashes together such distinctly different genres as...

The year is 1977. We're confronted by an aberrant Germany, a country devoid of an identity and overrun by violence, conflict and depravity.
It's youth are unhappy, clashing regularly with what they perceive as a dictatorial Government; and its capital, Berlin, epitomises the concept of a politically volatile state. However, four unwilling youths - known to the masses as art rock band One Model Nation - have come to embody the frustration of the nation, despite their objections. As events unfold, One Model Nation become embroiled in the polices hunt for the Baader-Meinhof Gang, with many suggesting that the band are in cohort with its members.
As this is a graphic novel, let's start with its visual impact. Not since The Watchmen have I been so taken back by a novels illustration - its colours are sharp; its character creation is spot on and its tone sings true to the stories concept.

“From Us rock band The Dandy Warhols’ frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor comes an original graphic novel illustrated by indie super star Jim Rugg. A work of historical fiction set in Germany in 1977, it follows four young men who were to become the voice of their generation. This is the epic journey of art noise band One Model Nation, the final dark days of the Baader-Meinhof Gang, and the band’s mysterious disappearance only months later. Features a host of bonus extras: sketches, director’s commentary, deleted scenes and more.”
Timed to coincide with the release of a music CD by fictional 1970s German new wave group “One Model Nation” entitled “Vol.1 Totalwerks 1969-1977” this graphic novel is about the fictional band in question and how after becoming figureheads for the increasingly violent Red Army Faction,...

What began as a Primal Scream problem has been turned over to The Dandy Warhols.
The trouble began earlier this week, when UK Home Secretary Theresa May used a song at a Conservative party conference that was thought to be Primal Scream's 1994 song "Rocks." Apparently, someone at the conference wrongly informed Labour MP Kerry McCarthy that it was the Primal Scream song, and McCarthy had what is the knee-jerk reaction nowadays -- took to Twitter to post a link to the lyrics, which begin like so: "Dealers keep dealing'/Thieves keep thieving'/Whores keep whorin'/Junkies keep scorn'/Trade is on the meat rack/Strip joints full of hunchbacks/Bitches keep bitchin'/Clap keeps itching'."
Why he wanted everyone to associate these lyrics with the Tory Party is another confusing twist. Long story short, this traveled down the Twitter-vine to Primal Scream themselves, who, what do you know, also...

The lead singer of the Dandy Warhols has hit out at the Conservative party after they used one of the band's tracks at a political event. It was originally reported that Home Secretary Theresa May walked offstage to Primal Scream track 'Rocks' at a party conference, after which the group said that they were "disgusted" that she had used their music despite having different political beliefs. It then emerged that the song used was actually The Dandy Warhols's 'Bohemian Like You', which caused frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor to launch a tirade of his own. Taylor-Taylor wrote on the band's official website: "Wtf? Where do I bitch about this? I'll tear their fuggin heads off. Well maybe not but this happened to us in an Arkansas gubernatorial race and it makes me super angry. And then I wanna puke.

Chicago – Is Michael Winterbottom’s 2004 curiosity little more than art house porn? It certainly would seem that way to any consumer who happens to glimpse at the film’s Blu-Ray case, which boasts that the disc contains the “full uncut explicit version” of “9 Songs.” There’s also a disclaimer warning that the film “contains sexually explicit content.” In the words of “Family Guy”’s Quagmire, “Oh…right.”
Like Soderbergh, Winterbottom is a versatile risk-taker who doesn’t shy away from courting controversy. From 1995’s “Butterfly Kiss” to this year’s “The Killer Inside Me,” the fearless filmmaker has utilized uncompromising depictions of violence and sexuality in order to plunge the audience headfirst into the psyche of his characters. In two of his best recent efforts, “Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story” and “The Road to Guantanamo,” Winterbottom has also proven his gift for blurring the line between documented reality and scripted fiction.

Actor Brad Dourif is most commonly known for his roles in genre fare such as Exorcist 3, Grim Prairie Tales, and the Child’s Play series. In more recent years Dourif has expanded his repertoire on television with roles in Deadwood and Law & Order, but that hasn’t stopped him returning to the more creepy roles with which he made his name, such as in his latest movie Death and Cremation.
The debut of director Justin Steele, Death and Cremation is from a script by Alecc Bracero and Justin Steele, and stars Dourif along with Jeremy Sumpter (Friday Night Lights), Scott Elrod, Debbon Ayer (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), Daniel Baldwin (Homicide: Life on the Street), and Staci Keenan (My Two Dads, Step by Step) in a story that takes place:

In the interests of full disclosure I will admit up front that I am a pretty big fan of Brad Dourif and love his performances in otherwise terrible films.
In addition to some questionable film choices, Dourif has recently done solid work in a number of Werner Herzog films and is probably still picking up pay checks for supplying the voice of Chucky in the Childs Play films.
He recently had a small part in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans and even managed to stand out there, against the wild eyed crazed performance by Nicholas Cage.
Brad Dourif is now playing a role that was surely made for him, a creepy funeral owner in a new thriller, Death and Cremation.

I simply don't think there is enough Brad Dourif in cinema, or else I am looking in the wrong places. Instantly recognizable, Dourif has shown up in all sorts of genres and notable works so it is good to see him once again, this time in a new horror/thriller Death and Cremation.
In Crest Point, people go about their day-to-day lives with no sense of urgency and standard stereotypes abound. There's the high school bully with the popular girlfriend. The single mother raising her son after her husband has died. The detective who's never cracked a big case. Then there's Stan (Brad Dourif), a single 59 year old recluse who contributes to society by offering cremation services from the basement of his funeral home. Jarod Leary (Jeremy Sumpter), a bullied and fatherless 17-year-old high school outcast doesn't even try to fit in with his high school peers. Dressed in black,...

Jarod Leary (Jeremy Sumpter), a bullied and fatherless 17-year-old high school outcast doesn't even try to fit in with his high school peers. Dressed in black,...

We Live in Public
Directed by: Ondi Timoner
Cast: Josh Harris, Tanya Corrin
Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins
Rating: Unrated
Release Date: January 8, 2010
Plot: Josh Harris starts out as a dot com entrepreneur and becomes a video artist/demagogue in pursuit of fame.
Who’S It For? Adults, though unrated, this isn’t a film for kids. This film requires an open-minded audience.
Expectations: I’m familiar with filmmaker Timoner through her film Dig! but I knew nothing about Harris or his projects before this film.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Josh Harris as himself: Harris describes himself as someone raised by TV, but that can’t explain all his weirdness. The film is really his story, showing how he built a company valued at $80 million then lost it/spent it on a series of increasingly bizarre social experiments. Seen in a mixture of archival footage and interviews, Harris develops from a geeky...

Like a blob suddenly grow a skeleton, this column found a structure. So welcome to The All New, All Different This Week in Comics, where every comic corresponds to a day (with sometimes-helpful descriptions of what each day means).
Monday – First Issues Existence 3.0 #1 (of 4), $3.50
(Nick Spencer/Ron Salas)
Image Comics
Despite having never read the previous series, Existence 2.0, I’m a bit interested in Existence 3.0. It’s a sci-fi comic (not nearly enough of those) published by Image Comics (who publish lots of quality comics) and features something called “consciousness transfer technology.” To become a better writer, I need to come up with about a dozen alternate ways to say “Sold!”
Tuesday – New Manga Day Slam Dunk Volume 7
(Takehiko Inoue)
Viz Media
There’s not a lot of sports manga that makes it to the states even though there’s tons of it in Japan, so let’s take a look a Slam Dunk,...

IFC.com presents the world premiere of the music video for the Dandy Warhols' "And Then I Dreamt of Yes," from the album "Earth To The Dandy Warhols," directed by Mark Helfrich (check out an interview with him below).
Director Mark Helfrich is a romantic. He's nostalgic about his beginnings as an editor, back when editors actually had to cut reels of 35mm film by hand. He used to be a DJ too, and for him, movies and music go hand in hand like vinyl and a good pair of headphones. A longtime Dandy Warhols fan, he shot this video for their song, "And Then I Dreamt of Yes," off of "Earth To The Dandy Warhols." The "Dr. Caligari" couple are so convincing that you may assume they're projections of original 1919 footage, unless you've happened to have seen it recently, but they're actors in old-timey makeup jobs shot simultaneously...

“I sneeze and hits come out,” Courtney Taylor-Taylor infamously declared in the 2002 documentary Dig!, but the truth is a little more complicated. His band The Dandy Warhols seems to treat its insanely catchy singles (“Bohemian Like You,” etc.) as novelties, as if semi-hits undercut credibility. 2003’s Welcome To The Monkey House is probably the best thing The Dandys ever did—all unrepentant synth-pop with the bass pumped up to club levels. (It’s appropriate, in the best possible way, that Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes contributed.) As it turns out, Monkey House is a case of record-company meddling ...

It can be frustrating to hear great buzz about a new film and then realize that you have to wait weeks, months, or even years, to see it yourself. Why not transform that frustration into satisfaction by watching the filmmaker's earlier work?
That was my thought as I checked SnagFilms to see what titles they're highlighting for free streaming this week. Ondi Timoner's lastest documentary, We Live in Public, generated good buzz at Sundance in January, prompting James Rocchi to write: "She's crafted a incisive, exciting and thought-provoking examination of the ways our new chances to live in public both make and mar the way we now live." (He also interviewed her along with her subject, Josh Harris.) I'll have to wait to see that one, but in the meantime, I decided to check out her earlier doc, Dig!
