Fans were shocked to hear that “NCIS: Hawai’i,” the newest series in CBS’ “NCIS” franchise, had been canceled after three seasons last week. At a press briefing in Los Angeles, CBS executives said the decision came down to a balance of cost and ratings, as well as cohesion across the network’s 2024-2025 schedule.
“It is incumbent on us to always keep the schedule fresh, keep momentum going. We had to make some really tough choices this year,” CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach told reporters. “Everything came back [from the Hollywood strikes] really strong, but ultimately we have to look at the cohesiveness of the schedule flow. We have to evaluate the financials and the performance overall, and we make tough decisions.”
When asked whether there was a chance of un-cancellation, as happened when CBS reversed its decision to end “S.W.A.T.” on two separate occasions, Reisenbach said no.

It came down to the wire, but NCIS: Hawai’i ultimately didn’t make the cut for next season at CBS. The news comes days before the network is set to announce its fall schedule on May 2 and before the Season 3 finale of Hawai’i is scheduled to air on May 6. According to sources, the episode was not meant to be a series finale and includes a tease for what was to come but fans won’t be left reeling by a major cliffhanger.
The cancellation is not a complete shocker since, as Deadline has been reporting, NCIS: Hawai’i was on the bubble. Still, the outcome is surprising since an effort was made to extend the well performing drama’s run for at least an abbreviated fourth and final season, with producers agreeing to a massive budget cut and open to other concessions in order to keep the show going.

CBS is shutting down one of its NCIS field offices.
The network has canceled NCIS: Hawai’i after three seasons. The show’s season — and now series — finale is set to air on May 6.
The series, which stars Vanessa Lachey and added former NCIS: Los Angeles star LL Cool J to its cast this season, will likely end up as the most watched show to be canceled this season — topping two other canceled CBS shows, CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd. NCIS: Hawai’i is averaging about 7.8 million viewers in Nielsen’s seven-day linear ratings this season, and it hits 10 million viewers over 35 days of cross-platform viewing.
Those numbers would make for easy renewals most anyplace else, but they put NCIS: Hawai’i only in the middle of the pack at CBS. The network will also introduce a new NCIS series in the 2024-25 season, a prequel subtitled Origins that follows a...

“NCIS: Hawai’i” has been canceled at CBS.
The “NCIS” spinoff is currently airing its third season at the broadcast network. The season finale scheduled to air on May 6 will now serve as the series finale.
“NCIS: Hawai’i” was the fourth series in the “NCIS” franchise and is now the third series to end. Both “NCIS: New Orleans” and “NCIS: Los Angeles” ended in the past few years after seven and 14 seasons respectively.
That is not to say the franchise is not still going strong. The mothership series was renewed at the beginning of April. CBS is also prepping a prequel series about a young Jethro Leroy Gibbs, while Paramount+ is readying a spinoff that will see the returns of both Cote de Pablo and Michael Weatherly. Paramount+ and CBS also air “NCIS: Sydney,” which was renewed for a second season in March.

[This story contains spoilers for the second-season finale of NCIS: Hawai’i.]
The season two finale of NCIS: Hawai’i introduced — or rather, reintroduced — a character who will join the cast next season.
In the episode, Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey) and Kate Whistler (Tori Anderson) find themselves under attack in Venezuela — until an unseen ally comes to their aid. Jane’s phone rings, and a very familiar voice is on the other end: Sam Hanna (LL Cool J), last seen in the Moroccan desert in the series finale of NCIS: Los Angeles on Sunday night.
After Tennant thanks him for the overwatch, Hanna says he was “in the neighborhood” and thought he could lend a hand. “You just happened to be in Venezuela?” she asks.
“Morocco, actually, but hey — what’s a few borders and an ocean, anyway?” he replies.

Jennifer Fox is naming the perpetrator behind her autobiographical Emmy-nominated film “The Tale.”
Writer-director Fox detailed her sexual abuse at age 13 when she was molested by a 40-year-old coach. Laura Dern portrayed adult Fox in the made-for-hbo film that showed both timelines of Fox enduring the abuse and later reflecting on it. Fox is now naming two-time Olympic medalist in rowing and nine-time Olympic coach Ted Nash as her assailant. Nash died in 2021.
“The adult part of me wants to move on, but that child in me, she wants to face him and get it over with and name him,” Fox told The New York Times. “There was a part of me saying, I will not let you rest until you name him.”
Fox recalled reading the “glowing, vomitous” obituaries about “how amazing this human being is” for Nash. “I was so angry,” she said, citing it as part of...

NCIS Hawai'i burst onto the screen last fall and charted a fresh and exciting direction for the franchise.
TV Fanatic got the chance to speak to showrunners Chris Silber and Jan Nash ahead of Season 2 about what's head.
At the beginning of our conversation, I noted that the show is much lighter than some other offerings.
Silber said it was important for the show to have humor and fun, despite some dark cases.
"We want to try to make it fun for everyone," Silber tells TV Fanatic.
Jan and Chris are no strangers to the NCIS universe, having worked on the other shows in the universe.
Silber recalls the origins of NCIS: Hawai'i back to when they planned to introduce a new character to NCIS: New Orleans.
"We sort of randomly thought, 'well, where is this character gonna come from? What's a cool NCIS location they could come from?"

What worked in NCIS: Hawai’i Season 1 was the nice balance of the agents’ personal lives with the cases, and that will continue. But first is the premiere crossover with NCIS. Ahead of the first season’s release on DVD on September 6 — the bonus content includes featurettes, deleted and extended scenes, and a gag reel — TV Insider caught up with executive producers Jan Nash and Christopher Silber and got scoop on what’s next. In Season 1, you found a balance in the cases and the agents’ personal lives. Will we get the same in Season 2? Jan Nash: That balance is really important to us. We want the show to live in a space where we’re telling interesting crimes and we’re also learning about our characters, whether it’s through the case or through separate B or C stories. We liked the way that Season 1 went in that regard. I...

Spinning off one of the biggest shows on TV is no easy task, but NCIS: Hawai'i Season 1 was a strong entry into the universe.
Viewers were introduced to the sun-soaked Hawaii, which featured a new team of NCIS agents.
One of them is the talented Jesse Boone, played by the incomparable Noah Mills.
To celebrate the DVD release of NCIS: Hawai'i Season 1, CBS Home Entertainment shared an exclusive first look at the special features on offer.
We take a deep dive into how Noah landed the role of Jesse Boone.
Showrunners Christopher Silber and Jan Nash reveal that Mills brought layers to the character they didn't know existed.
They call his casting a pleasant surprise.
As a viewer of the series, Mills is perfect in the role.
It's rare for a TV series to work from the get-go, but NCIS: Hawai'i got off the ground running, featuring compelling characters and storytelling.

The entire NCIS franchise will be returning for the 2022-2023 broadcast season. CBS has renewed flagship NCIS for a milestone 20th season, which would tie Gunsmoke as the third-longest-running U.S. primetime drama series only behind Law & Order: Svu and Law & Order. It also has picked up its top freshman drama NCIS: Hawai’i for a second season and, as it approaches its 300th episode, NCIS: Los Angeles for a 14th season.
The three dramas join CBS’ previously announced renewals of The Amazing Race, Bob ♥ Abishola, CSI: Vegas, Ghosts, The Neighborhood, Secret Celebrity Renovation, Survivor, Tough As Nails and Young Sheldon. Additional renewals, including for CBS’ other strong procedural drama franchise, FBI, will be coming soon.
Cancellations/Renewals Scorecard: TV Shows Ended Or Continuing In 2021-22 Season
NCIS has successfully navigated the leading man transition from Mark Harmon to Gary Cole, securing a renewal. The venerable drama is the No.
