Nominations for the 2024 Outer Critics Circle Awards were announced on Tuesday, April 23. The stars of the hit Broadway revival of “Merrily We Roll Along,” Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe, read off the nominees live from the Museum of Broadway.
Off-Broadway productions ultimately out-paced Broadway with this critics group. The new David Yazbek musical “Dead Outlaw” led the pack with nine nominations. It was followed by “The Connector,” another Off-Broadway musical, and “Stereophonic,” a lauded Broadway play, with seven nominations each.
While there are no Tony nominators in the Outer Critics Circle membership, these nominations can provide some clues as to how theater aficionados are thinking about this season’s Tony race. Of the five productions cited for Best New Broadway Musical, only “Days of Wine and Roses” and “Suffs” made the cut in the all-important Best Score category. They were joined by two Off-Broadway entries, as well as...

Daniel Radcliffe won’t be competing against his Merrily We Roll Along Broadway co-star Jonathan Groff for a Tony Award next June, and the reason has nothing to do with performance quality: The awards administration committee ruled today that Radcliffe will be eligible in the featured performer category, apparently leaving the lead category to Groff.
Lindsay Mendez, who plays Mary Flynn, the musical’s most prominent female character, will, like Radcliffe, who plays Charley Kringas, be eligible in the featured slot (the Tony’s equivalent to Oscar’s “supporting” categories).
While Groff’s character of Franklin Shepard has traditionally been considered the main character of the Stephen Sondheim-George Furth musical, this year’s hit Maria Friedman-directed revival included the three stars’ names above the title, leaving some wiggle room with regard to the category decisions.
Indeed, audience members might be hard-pressed to decide which actor goes where: While...

Once Upon a One More Time will play its final Broadway performance Sept. 3.
The musical, which features the songs of Britney Spears and a storyline about fairytale princesses in search of enlightenment, began preview performances at the Marquis Theatre on May 13 and opened June 22. Spears approved the musical and suggested its initial themes. She also signed an underlying rights agreement with the show, which was notably one of the first deals Spears signed since a judge terminated her conservatorship.
The closing notice comes as the musical failed to catch on with critics and with Broadway audiences, with the show reporting capacities in the 50 percent range for the past seven weeks. In the last publicly reported week of grosses, ended Aug. 13, the musical grossed its lowest eight-performance week yet, bringing in $512,008.
Producers James. L Nederlander and Hunter Arnold said there are currently plans underway for a national tour and international productions of the show,...

Hit me, Britney, one more time? In 2005, the Lady of the Lake in Monty Python’s Spamalot lamented, “I’m constantly replaced by Britney Spears.” These days, a lot of composers trying to get their scores onto Broadway stages could sing the same lyric: Spears’s music burst onto Broadway in Moulin Rouge in 2019 (“Toxic” appears in a mashup alongside Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance”) and five of her songs appear in the jukebox musical & Juliet, including “…Baby One More Time,” “Oops!…I Did It Again,” and “Stronger.”
All four of those songs feature in the first all-Britney musical, Once Upon a One More Time, a frivolously delightful entry into the jukebox genre. Even though recent Broadway seasons have brought pro forma biographical musicals like Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, Mj, and A Beautiful Noise, there’s been far greater pleasure in shows like Moulin Rouge, & Juliet, and the delirious...

Bad Cinderella could have been the poison apple that killed off revisionist fairy tales once and for all, but Britney Spears and Once Upon A One More Time, the new Broadway musical opening tonight that brims with her hits and high spirits, has come along to deliver a happy ever after that’s as unexpected as it is enchanting. Smart, funny, splendid to look at and all with a beat you can dance to, this tribute to the Brothers Grimm, the sisters of the Second Wave and, not least, the indomitable Ms. Spears, is a delight.

The Drama League today announced the nominations for the 2023 Drama League Awards. Honoring achievements on and Off-Broadway, the nominations were announced this morning by Roger Bart (“Back to the Future: The Musical”) and Justin Guarini (“Once Upon A One More Time”) at the New York Library for the Performing Arts. Winners will be revealed at the 89th Annual Drama League Awards ceremony at the Ziegfeld Ballroom on Friday, May 19, 2023.
“I don’t think I’ve experienced a theater season in New York ever like this one,” noted Artistic Director Gabriel Stelian-Shanks. “There’s been a range, a breadth, an expansion of possibility that has been truly astonishing to witness. Theater makers have inspired not only with their creativity, but also with their drive and determination to serve audiences with vision and talent. These nominees reflect the promise and greatness inherent in the work of theater folk, and I can’t help but be deeply proud.

“American Idol” may be a platform for aspiring unknown singers to showcase their talent outside of their bedrooms, but some contestants may have an advantage over others: being born into famous families.
Season 21 has already shown several so-called “Nepo Babies” — contestants with ties to the entertainment business — competing for the crown, including Kaya Stewart, daughter of Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics (pictured).
“With all your different opportunities and connections and stuff, how did you even land on ‘American Idol?’” Judge Katy Perry asked before her audition.
It’s a fair question, but “nepo babies” competing on “American Idol” is nothing new. In the past, the offspring of parents with varying backgrounds from music, acting, sports, and politics have all found their way in front of the judges.
Actor Jim Carrey’s daughter, Jane, earned a golden ticket in season 11; Aretha Franklin’s granddaughter, Grace, auditioned last season; and Lara Johnston,...

Over 20 years after Kelly Clarkson won "American Idol" with Justin Guarini as the runner-up, the two took a stroll down memory lane. During a recent episode on "The Kelly Clarkson Show," the former costars reflected on their backstage memories and revealed there was even some friendly competition off stage.
Guarini said he and the former judge on "The Voice" passed the time while they weren't performing by playing the popular card game Speed. "If you ever have the chance to see Kelly and she ever says, 'Hey do you want to play a card game?' Don't," Guarini told Clarkson's other guest, Alexandra Daddario.
"I've always been competitive," Clarkson replied. Guarini laughed, "She's a killer," recalling that he only won a couple of the hundred games the pair played together.
This isn't the first time the accomplished vocalist and mother of two has opened up about her early days of fame.

Kelly Clarkson has had a big 2022. The daytime host first gained notoriety by winning the first-ever American Idol season, beating Justin Guarini. Since then, the singer had been smashing records on the billboard charts, first having her debut single, A Moment like This, jump from no. 52 to no. 1, breaking a 38-year-old record set by The Beatles for the most significant leap to number one. Clarkson’s accomplishments continued to grow from that moment on as the singer/talk show host has sold more than 25 million copies, with 2003’s Thankful, 2004’s Breakaway, 2007’s My December 2009’s All I Ever

“American Idol” marked its 20th birthday on Monday night with “The Great Idol Reunion,” a one-hour special featuring past “Idol” contestants and judges and celebrating the show’s history, both during its years on Fox and its current home on ABC.
“Tonight we are opening the Idol yearbook,” said host Ryan Seacrest as he revealed the “Idol” VIP area, which included such familiar faces as Tamyra Gray, Pia Toscano, Anthony Federov, Brooke White, Justin Guarini, William Hung, and Seacrest’s unforgettable frosted hair.
Wasting no time getting to Hung, whose name is “synonymous with ‘American Idol,'” noted Seacrest, he returned to the stage to reprise his epic Ricky Martin performance of “She Bangs” as former judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson felt right at home alongside the current panel of Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.
In classic Abdul form, she kicked into Paula-speak, which fans surely fondly remember.

It was a homecoming on American Idol as familiar faces from over the show’s last 20 seasons returned to sing on “The Great Idol Reunion.” The VIP Idol Alumni Lounge was also teeming with past contestants. Og judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson joined the current panel of Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan. And they weren’t the only surprises: The screaming girls who went viral in 2008 for their emotional reaction to David Archuleta not winning Idol actually met him in 2022. Host Ryan Seacrest sort of brought back the blond tips when introducing the first season’s runner-up, Justin Guarini. We even got a little “She Bangs” from William Hung, who is now a motivational speaker. The current competition took a break for a fun trip down a musical memory lane. Twelve alums came back for six duets to celebrate the Idol milestone: two decades of creating singing superstars.

Kelly Clarkson waited a lifetime for a moment like this. As seen on the Dec. 8 episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, the 39-year-old singer had the best time interviewing one of her favorite actresses, Sandra Bullock. The side-splitting segment began with Sandra, 57, joking that she had voted for Justin Guarini when he competed against Kelly on the first season finale of American Idol. "Look, the good thing is that you won," the actress quipped, prompting a laugh from Kelly. "It doesn't matter who I voted for." Though Kelly initially tried...
