Barcelona-based indie studio Filmax has nabbed international sales rights to Joaquín Mazón’s “The Night My Dad Saved Christmas,” starring Spain’s king of comedy Santiago Segura (”Father There Is Only One”) and Ernesto Sevilla (“I Can Quit Whenever I Want”).
A Spain-Mexico co-production, the film teams Spain’s tax incentive structure La Navidad en Sus Manos Aie with three of Spain’s most successful film production companies: Nadie Es Perfecto, Esto También Pasará Producciones and Bowfinger International Pictures.
The family comedy, scripted by Francisco Arnal and Daniel Monedero, is set in the days leading up to Christmas, when Santa – played by Segura – has an accident on his sleigh, right in the middle of Madrid, and ends up in hospital, where he will have to stay until after Christmas.
Fortunately, Salva, the guy he’s sharing a room with at the hospital, is willing to step in and take on his all important Christmas work.

Guido Rud’s FilmSharks International has snagged worldwide sales and remake rights to the Spanish movie spinoff of wildly popular French fictional comedy TV series, “Camera Café,” where a camera planted in a coffee machine captures the shenanigans and gossip chatter among office workers.
“Camera Café: La Pelicula” (“Camera Café” The Movie”) is an Atresmedia Cine, Estela Films and Warner Bros. co-production with the participation of Movistar Plus, which pre-bought Spanish pay TV rights. The comedy is the directorial debut of actor-writer-humorist Ernesto Sevilla (“Torrente 4”) and is also the feature debut of the film’s writer Raul Cimas, who has co-penned some Paramount Comedy Channel series with Sevilla.
The movie takes place in a dysfunctional office ten years after an economic crisis devastated the workplace where the most skilled people were fired. The least competent workers remain in charge and they will stop at nothing to keep their jobs.

This cheeky, entertaining, nostalgic feature debut boasts a cast that includes three stars of Spanish comedy – Julián López, Ernesto Sevilla and Arturo Valls – and is being filmed in Bilbao and Madrid. Interrail, a wild, fast-paced, cheeky action-comedy, will be the feature debut by Fer García-Ruiz, following As I Love You, a short film that was nominated for the Goya Awards in 2018 and scooped myriad international prizes, such as the Audience Award at the Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival. The movie brings together a cast of comedians headed up by Julián López (Superlópez), Ernesto Sevilla (I Can Quit Whenever I Want), Arturo Valls (The Tunnel Gang), Dafne Fernández (Perfect Strangers) and Ana Milán (Muertos de amor). The screenplay was penned by David Marqués, who co-wrote the storyline of Champions, a huge mainstream hit from two years ago, for which he was nominated for the Goya in said category. The shoot...
Exclusive: Key Spanish seller Filmax has taken international rights to comedy I Can Quit Whenever I Want (Lo Dejo Cuando Quiera) from local giant Telecinco Cinema, producers of the successful Spanish reboot of Perfect Strangers, The Impossible and The Orphanage, and Mod Producciones, producers of The Tribe and The Summit.
The anticipated Spanish-language film is a remake of hit Italian crime-comedy Smetto Quando Voglio, about three college professors, recently unemployed due to the economic crisis, who develop a multi-vitamin that allows them to party all night long without side effects. They launch themselves into the world of nightclubs and shady dealings, hoping to find a market for their new wonder drug.
This one sounds like a lot of fun. English-language remake potential seems clear.
Starring are David Verdaguer (Summer 1993), Ernesto Sevilla (We Are Pregnant), Carlos Santos (Smoke and Mirrors), Cristina Castaño (Under the Same Roof), Miren Ibarguren, Amaia Salamanca (Our...
