24 may be slated for another run on Fox, but that’s not the only place where it’s being revived.
Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor—who crossed over to Hollywood with a turn in the Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire, followed by a guest-starring role as Middle Eastern President Omar Hassan on season 8 of 24 — is adapting the hit series for Indian audiences.
It’s a move that’s breaking convention in more ways than one. Such an ambitious TV series (which is set to debut overseas on Oct. 4) is nearly unheard of in India where primetime is dominated by soaps and reality shows.

We all know that after Slumdog Millionaire, our very own Anil Kapoor was asked for several Hollywood productions and he bagged a role in the Tom Cruise starrer Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. And before that he played the role of President Omar Hassan of Kamistan in the popular American tv-serial 24. And guess what… he will now play the lead.
Anil Kapoor’s production company recently bought the remake rights of the American show. Kapoor will make his TV debut in India next year with this show, which he will adapt for the Indian viewer. The tv-show will air in Hindi and dubbed in several regional languages. And is it’s true then the international team of 24 will be involved with the making of the adaption.
Kapoor is thrilled and sees a wish come true. “I am really happy that the makers of the show have put their faith in me for its Indian version.

Ever since the clock ran down on the real-time thriller "24," fans have been itching for more Jack Bauer. Sure, it's nice that we'll get Kiefer Sutherland back on the small screen in the new Fox drama "Touch," but it's just not the same. We want Jack. Slumdog Millionaire star Anil Kapoor knows first-hand how Fox/20th TV’s real-time drama 24 was produced, having co-starred on the series’ final season. Now he will apply his knowledge to an Indian incarnation of the Emmy-winning drama, in which he will play an Indian version of Kiefer Sutherland’s signature character Jack Bauer. Kapoor is anxious to see everyone’s reactions to his performance. “I am always excited, but not nervous. The appreciation I have received internationally has cushioned me.”

In a press release sent to the web site TVshowsOnDVD.com, the DVD distributor Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment announced that 24's eighth season will arrive on DVD and Blu-Ray on December 7, 2010 in North America.

Besides, Jack is embracing a new role: being a grand-father. However, a mysterious man and a reborn CTU seek his help to prevent the assassination of a Middle Eastern president, Omar Hassan (Anil Kapoor), at the United Nations' headquarters. In all fairness, 24's eighth season is not the best season nor the worst one. Although 24 is entertaining, Fox, an American TV network, did the right thing by pulling the plug on this action show. After all, from a creative perspective, 24's pencil-pushers are out of gas.

In the beginning there was a man, his wife…and their daughter. Seemingly mild-mannered at first, we quickly learned that this man was far from quiet or reserved; the antitheses of what a family man is presumed to be. Before long, his daughter was kidnapped and his life plunged into a 24 hour race to find her, save a president, and expose a conspiracy.
He did. With cunning, efficiency, guts…and a shocking compunction about putting down whomever stood in his way.
But despite his lethal inner id, CTU agent Jack Bauer (played relentlessly by Kiefer Sutherland) still found he was too late to protect his wife from being murdered by one of the very people he trusted the most, in a sickening act of betrayal that set the stage for a series that could only have been born of our post-9/11 world.
So began the legacy of 24, which I described...

Jack Bauer has been tortured by terrorists, imprisoned in a foreign country, addicted to heroin, infected with a deadly virus, electrocuted to death and subsequently brought back to life. But on Monday night (May 24), he'll go through an entirely new kind of trauma: an ending.
After eight action-packed days of foiling terrorist plots, killing the bad guys and losing plenty of sleep, Jack Bauer's time on the small screen finally runs out with Monday's series finale of "24." It hasn't always been an easy road for the former Counter Terrorism Unit operative — indeed, many would argue that the show is far from its glory days of seasons one and two — but with the end of "24" comes the end of a television era,...

One thing has repeatedly occurred to me over the past three seasons of 24: After all the crap he's had to deal with, all the betrayals, all the death, Jack Bauer must be seriously f*cked up psychologically by now. How long is it going to be before he just snaps and starts slaughtering innocent bystanders and baby animals?
We glimpsed that in Monday's penultimate episode. With the two hour series finale set to air on May 24 (appropriate date, yes?), it's now realistic to expect that Jack will be in a truly awful place and that the producers' hints that this would be the case are starting to bear fruit.
But first to the body count. In hour 22 Jack continues his solo operation in defiance of President Taylor, hoping to expose the Russian plot to kill Middle Eastern President Omar Hassan (Slumdog Millionaire's Anil Kapoor), which also led to...

Last week I rhetorically asked how many more silent clocks we'd have before the end of the season. Sadly, Monday night we got the answer that they're definitely not over.
Jack offers his apologies to President Taylor about failing to keep Omar Hassan alive, but she says there's no blame to bear. Unfortunately, she feels she does need to dissolve the peace accord, a decision Bauer urges her to reconsider.

In death, President Omar Hassan can take pride in many things: His martyrdom helped save tens of thousands of lives, and no doubt spared Manhattan from terrible morning rush hour gridlock. And though ruffled, his hair still looked terrific.
Mussed or not, Hassan will be missed and his death, the end of the dirty bomb threat, Dana.s arrest, and oh yeah, the external reality that 24 is going dark after this season, have delivered the show and its fans into a strange, new world.

Random thoughts, questions and musings as we hit the halfway point of Day Eight:
1. Where's Renee?
I like the character and the actress, and I was looking forward to a season of Jack's yin to her yang. Right now it's looking like she was brought in just to kick-start the plot, but I'm hoping we haven't seen the last of her.

Dear 24:
When we first met in 2001, you were perfect for me. You were exciting, and dangerous, and knew how to show a lady a good time. But lately, the relationship has lost its luster. I know that this is the natural progression of any relationship, you can’t possibly keep up that same level of intrigue for all these years. After the seven year itch, I settled into a comfort with your familiarity. I looked forward to spending time with you every Monday night.
But you just had to go and ruin things with all these other women. Rene and Dana ring a bell? Heck, I’ve even got a bone to pick with Chloe this season. I can’t deal with all these other women, and here is why I quit you, mid-episode last Monday, for good. Spoilers abound, so proceed with caution.
Sad/Bad/Mad Rene. Actually I really like Rene,...

The Fox hit series "24" may be hitting theaters near you in the foreseeable future.
The show is still going strong in its eighth season. And while renewal is undecided, it's being reported that the screenwriter Billy Ray ("State of Play") pitched his movie version to Fox execs, who are keen on the idea of Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) beating the clock to save a dignitary in Europe.
The Dishrag talked exclusively with new "24" star Anil Kapoor (he plays Omar Hassan, the President of a Middle Eastern country) at the recent American India Foundation gala, where he was being honored for humanitarian work.
The Bollywood star is best known in the Us as the game show host in "Slumdog Millionaire". And in Kiefer's opinion, he's the real deal.
"I've had the pleasure of working with Ani as we've been shooting the 8th season of "24." Besides his immense talent, he has unbelievable grace and kindness.

Anil Kapoor, who has got rave reviews in the American press for his stint on the just-premiered drama series .24″, was so self-effacing that he couldn.t ask the producers to let him show the first four episodes to his family back home. When Anil left for Los Angeles last week, he had promised his family in Mumbai that he would bring back four episodes of .24′ which premiered in New York. But he came back to Mumbai empty-handed..I had promised them. And I.m sure Fox would.ve given the episodes to me. In fact, they gave the first four episodes to every journalist beforehand with a secrecy clause. So I could.ve easily asked because my daughters Sonam and Rhea and my brother Sanjay were all keen to see my television debut. But I just couldn.t ask. I was too shy. Can you believe it?.And now the...

The American press has gone ga-ga over Anil Kapoor. The Los Angeles Times writes, "The most promising (actor) this season is Omar Hassan (Anil Kapoor), president of the Islamic Republic of Kamistan, who is negotiating a peace treaty with U.S. President Allison Taylor (Cherry Jones). He's regal and decent." Says the Entertainment Weekly, "The dapper Hassan, played by the wonderful Anil Kapoor, who really should go by the name of Fantastic Sam because of his incredible head of hair..." And the Hollywood Reporter just can't get enough of our Kapoor. "The best addition (to this season's episodes) is Anil Kapoor, best known stateside for his role as the "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" host in Slumdog Millionaire." He plays an idealized version a Middle East leader with an Elvis-style pompadour on the verge of signing a historic peace agreement. It's a painfully standard 24 part, yet he owns each scene he's in.

Actor Anil Kapoor has made an assured and credible debut on Us television with a two-hour season premier of the hugely popular drama series "24".Playing president Omar Hassan of a fictional Middle Eastern country called Islamic Republic of Kamistan, Kapoor's was a largely swift performance, laboured somewhat in a place or two by the inherent unfamiliarity with geopolitical issues. On balance though, Kapoor slipped into the frenzied world of Jack Bauer, played with his trademark nervy manner by Kiefer Sutherland, like a consummate professional.Hassan is presented as a transformational Middle Eastern leader who is the only hope for stability in the volatile region. He is at the United Nations for talks with Us President Allison Taylor (Cherry Jones) to forswear his country's nuclear programme in return for billions of dollars in aid.Inevitably, Hassan's peace moves have not gone down well with his detractors who have hatched...

For those who still haven't seen the premiere of 24's eighth season on Sunday, here's a way to get up to date.
In this season, which is set in New York City, Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) is thrust back into action when Victor Aruz (Benito Martinez), a former informant on the Salazar case who is being pursued by killers, knocks at his door. Victor tells Jack that an assassination plot against Omar Hassan (Anil Kapoor), a president of a Muslim country, is about to happen at the United Nations (Un). As a matter of fact, some people want Hassan dead because he's about to sign a treaty with the USA stipulating that his country gives up its nuclear ambitions and financial support for terrorist groups. As for President Alison Taylor (Cherry Jones), she's now divorced (her husband made the first step) for sending her daughter in prison (see season 7) and...

Kiefer Sutherland's 24 co-star Anil Kapoor has said that he is turning into his alter ego Jack Bauer. Speaking during a conference call, Kapoor - Omar Hassan on the real-time drama - also praised Sutherland for making him feel part of the team. "I'd heard a lot about Kiefer before I started and in my head, I imagined he'd be a bit slack because he's been working on the show for eight seasons," he said. "But when I came on set, I felt as if this was his first season - the same enthusiasm and excitement was there. I was taken aback by his commitment and professionalism. (more)...

When each new season of 24 commences, I immediately find myself focusing on two things: how marvelous Kiefer Sutherland still looks while playing TV's No. 1 action star, and whether he actually takes the time to tape a fresh version of "events occur in real time" before each season begins. Someday, we intrepid reporter-types will have to take the time to ask him while we're in the midst of inquiring about future seasons of Fox's most-anticipated midseason drama (a popular topic for the nation's TV critics at press tour this month). Until then, please follow along with our handy dandy recaps, coming...

Here at TVOvermind, we often receive material from the networks that, out of good conscience, we cannot share with our readers. For instance, last week I got my grubby paws on the first five minutes from the Season 8 premiere of '24,' airing tonight at 9/8c. The whole "good conscience" thing prohibits me from posting it, but as I am an individual of mediocre conscience, I'll give you a play-by-play. But caution! There be spoilers in this article.

Coming off of a DC-set season that even naysayers agree was much, much better than Season 6 (aka "The Season with Mushroom Cloud, the Evil Grandpa, and Rick Schroder"), 24 has moved its base of operations to New York for the eighth season. To reflect the show's new setting, billboards across America are proclaiming: "New York Gets Jacked." I don't know what that means, but I like it. (Check out Ken Tucker's take on the new season here.) The show hosted a red carpet premiere in New York last week and EW.com was there to chat with Kiefer Sutherland ask vital questions to the supporting cast.

It's the device that keeps on giving, long after the gig should have been up: the adrenalin-infested ticking clock where danger lurks around every corner, allies are actually enemies, and every nutwhack with a pipe bomb and a cause wants to ruin Jack Bauer's day…all punctuated every so often by Kiefer Sutherland, aka Bauer, determinedly yelling "We're running out of time!"
It's one of those remarkable facts of television that this show didn't run out of time years ago (to read my review of 24's first season on DVD — back when I thought this show was the best nail-biter ever to hit the airwaves — click here). After the first season, the second at most, the gimmick was up. You can only have so many terrorists with bio-weapons/nukes/assassination squads threatening America so many times before the device gets tired. And yet, here we are entering our eighth season.

Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor will play a Middle Eastern leader in the upcoming season of the hit American television series '24,' which starts January 17 on Fox. The award-winning show stars actor Kiefer Sutherland as U.S. government agent Jack Bauer.
Each season of the action/drama series depicts a 24-hour period in the life of Bauer. The upcoming season is the eighth in the series—and therefore called "Day 8." In this season, Bauer must foil an assassination plot during an international security conference in New York City, which is attended by Kapoor's character, Omar Hassan.
Kapoor has been a film star in India for decades but became widely known to Americans only recently for his role as the sleazy game-show host in the Oscar-winning film, 'Slumdog Millionaire.' The 50-year-old actor will appear in 16 episodes of '24.'

About a month ago I posted promo photos for the upcoming season 8 premiere of 24 (which is set to air over two nights on January 17th and January 18th). Fox has now released more, including shots with newcomer Freddie Prinze Jr. I don't mind Freddie, but I rarely see him in any dramatic (sorry, I Know What You Did Last Summer doesn't count), so I'm interested to see how he fares in 24.
