There’s many ways to score a goal, and ultimately it doesn’t matter how you do it. They all count, after all. But while a tap-in is worth just as much as a goal from a player’s own half, it’s not quite the same thing to watch. There’s nothing like seeing a truly great goal, be it a free kick, a chip, a lob, a volley, whatever.
Even including that, though, there’s something special about seeing a ball struck harder than you’d think possible. A screamer; a thronker; an absolute thunderbastard. A Tony Yeboah, if you will (although sadly he has no place on this list)
While reaching speeds of 100mph might not cause us to bat an eyelid when it’s a serve in tennis, and approaching those speeds is fairly commonplace in cricket, it’s generally more unheard of in football.

TV cameos are one of the traditional stations of the cross on the road to career redemption. Remember Paula Deen’s taped cameo on Fox’s MasterChef in the fall? Now it’s Anthony Weiner‘s turn, in Friday’s season finale of Amazon’s Alpha House. Weiner will appear as himself in the episode, which also features cameos from Tom Brokaw, former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele and CNN analyst Jeffrey Toobin. The political comedy written by Garry Trudeau, follows four Republican U.S. senators living together as roommates on Capitol Hill. It was inspired by the actual Capitol Hill home known as The Omega House that’s shared by Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois; Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York; and Rep. George Miller, D-California. The show chronicles the follies of Washington politics, speaking of Weiner. The New York Dem resigned from Congress in June 2011 after word got out...

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-ky) is the most recent of 14 Republican Senators to promise a filibuster against the package of gun regulations, including universal background checks, that the Senate is set to consider this week. That filibuster effort has been condemned by everyone from President Obama to his 2008 presidential rival, Sen. John McCcain, but former Rnc Chairman Michael Steele may have launched the most bitter friendly fire yet. On Chuck Todd's The Daily Rundown, Chairman Steele urged those Gop Senators to "At least pretend that you give a damn about what happened."...

The nature of cable news is such that a certain number of fallacious talking points are ignored, like insect parts in peanut butter, simply in the interest of time. Every now and then, though, one gets stuck in the filter, and cleared out by a fed-up host. That's what happened on Friday night's Hardball, when MSNBC contributor and former Rnc Chairman Michael Steele casually remarked that the Republicans are a "center right party, very much like the country," and host Chris Matthews spent most of the segment pushing back against that common, and false, notion, repeatedly reminding Chairman Steele that "Obama won."...

Channing Tatum will be named People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive for 2012. But the bigger question is if his Magic Mike costars make honorable mentions.
This will make Thanksgiving dinner awkward.
Towleroad has a roundup on the polling on the four marriage equality ballot measures up for a vote today and the associated polling, which is good, but not conclusive. The most nail biting one will be in Washington, because the results won't be known on election day.
The L.A. Washington -- Four years ago, Ben Affleck was a familiar presence around the Democratic convention, packing produce for charity and even winning a poker tournament. Singer Fergie performed with her Black Eyed Peas. Sheryl Crow sang, too, with Susan Sarandon joining in from the audience.

Former Rnc Chairman Michael Steele's tumultuous tenure as head of the national Gop was marked by his tendency toward outspokenness, a tendency that earned him little reward. Since he become a contributor for MSNBC almost a year ago, however, that tendency has become an asset. Although still a strong critic of President Obama, the Chairman isn't afraid to tell uncomfortable truths about his own party. In the last part of our exclusive interview, Chairman Steele discussed the economy and jobs with me, and talked at length about what President Obama has done right.

The second season premiere of "Outrageous Kid Parties" is on TLC tonight and I've always hated the whole concept of expensive overdone parties for kids under the age of ten. Most of them are mentally and physically exhausted after about two hours and god forbid you drop a huge chunk of cash on a day long petting zoo rental only to have the birthday boy or girl collapse into a tantrum half way through. But my feelings may also stem from the fact that I barely remember most of my childhood birthdays beyond getting cake so I'm really glad my parents got all the decorations from Oriental Trading Company and the cake from Baskin Robbins so I don't have to feel guilty about the fact that all the parties run together in my mind. If anything good* has come out of the first two days of Rick Perry's presidential campaign, it is this following clip, a wildly entertaining, somewhat difficult to follow discussion hosted by Al Sharpton and flanked by Bob Shrum and Michael Steele, though the latter seems to steal the spotlight from the other two for much of the segment. Something that Steele reminded Matthews is the same request Republicans have been making for weeks.
