Despite its striking architecture, Palm Springs has seldom been captured effectively on film — even the movie “Palm Springs” shot somewhere else. But no longer. The Olivia Wilde-directed dystopian fantasy “Don’t Worry Darling” makes ample use of the California resort town’s well-preserved mid-century buildings to showcase her vision of 1950s suburban bliss covering up something menacing underneath. Endless sunny skies, broad avenues lined with swaying palm trees and turquoise swimming pools are signifiers of an idealized life for the inhabitants of the fictional Victory Project, like the attractive young couple played by Florence Pugh and Harry Styles.
Production designer Katie Byron, the art and set decoration teams and location manager Chris Baugh pushed hard to be able to shoot in landmark mid-century buildings, and furnished them with period-appropriate items – despite the difficulty of filming in pristine historic locales.
Byron took inspiration from several of the architects and designers most associated with Palm Springs,...

Bill Kobin, a pioneering public television executive who ran Los Angeles pubcaster Kcet for 13 years and helped launch the careers of Bill Moyers, Huell Howser and many others, died Friday at his home in Brentwood, CA. He was 91. No cause of death was given.
Kobin worked as a television journalist in the early days of the medium with the Dumont Broadcasting, ABC and CBS News. He produced The Political Obituary of Richard Nixon, which landed him on Nixon’s famous enemies list. He worked with such famous names as Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite, Harry Reasoner and Andy Rooney but eventually chose to leave the world of the big networks and align with Net in New York, the not-for-profit television startup that was the precursor to the PBS system. Tom Labonge, an ebullient city councilman who served a district spanning Hollywood, the Universal City area, and the Greek Theater in Los Feliz from 2001 to 2015, died Thursday of unknown causes at his Silver Lake home. He was 67 and was known as “Mr. Los Angeles” for his vast knowledge of the city and its history.
A 39-year veteran of Los Angeles politics, Labonge was a huge supporter of Griffith Park, working to expand its size by hundreds of acres and protect its wilder parts from development. He had a passion for constituent events, often handing out loaves of pumpkin bread baked by local nuns.
Among Labonge’s background was time spent as the chairman of the Arts, Parks, Health and Aging committee

James Adomian's impressions of Huell Howser on IFC's "Comedy Bang! Bang!" and Madonna on "Children's Hospital" (which is too complicated to explain right now) are hilarious, but now the "Last Comic Standing" vet is taking on his roughest role yet: Jesse Ventura. Ohhhhhhhhhh, Jesse. He's back in this Funny Or Die pseudo-campaign ad, teeming with Minnesotan angst, and ready to pump iron in a tie-dye t-shirt. Which might mean he's running for president. But maybe not. Who knows? you're Goin' Down, Hulk. ...

Dolly Parton in a lavish Fifth Avenue apartment in New York City is sort of like imagining a fish out of water. So getting a glimpse of the country singer's midtown home with Central Park views in 1980 is a rarity. The star, who was in her thirties at the time, was staying there while preparing for her role in the film "Nine To Five."
In the clip above, Parton gave Huell Howser from CBS' "Country People" a tour of the space, which was decked out in classic '80s pastel decor, laminate and glass. The highlight of the video is when Howser remarked on her large collection of books, to which Parton replied, "They're all my books, but most of them were just bought and put in here for looks. I figured if I got bored in New York City I could read em', but who gets bored in New York City?...

Bathed in the rays of a Los Angeles sunset, hundreds of fans gathered near Griffith Observatory Tuesday to pay tribute to a man they believed was truly "California's Gold."
The hour-long public sunset memorial on Mount Hollywood was held to honor Huell Howser, the folksy travel host who died on Jan. 7 after decades of highlighting California's people and landmarks.
"Huell you are amaaaaaazing," proclaimed pop-culture humorist Charles Phoenix, using one of the host's favorite terms as he shouted up into the sky during the tribute. "Thank you, Huell, for sharing the stories and the glories of the greatest state in the country like nobody else."
The 67-year-old Tennessee native had been battling cancer for the last two years and died at his home in Palm Springs. The memorial, organized by Los Angeles City Councilman Tom Labonge, was held just a few miles away from the home he kept in Los Angeles off Rossmore Avenue.

The space-age retreat, which was constructed in 1968, resembles a flying saucer and looks out over a 60-acre property. It has two bedrooms and two bathrooms, and is located in the desert between Los Angeles, Calif. and Las Vegas, Nev. Curbed La has more on the home's history:
Originally commissioned by aircraft-mechanics genius Vard Wallace as a personal retreat, the home was designed by prolific and versatile Southern California architect Harold Bissner, Jr. and completed in 1968.
