If you’ve seen promos for Paint, you’ve probably figured out that Brit McAdams’ comedy starring Owen Wilson is inspired by Bob Ross, the artist who hosted the low-fi PBS series The Joy of Painting for many years before succumbing to lymphoma at age 52 in 1995. Creating landscape paintings in under 30 minutes, Ross was an unwitting progenitor of Asmr, with his endlessly laid-back demeanor, his soft speaking style and his soothing manner that exuded a sort of hypnotic calm. He was also a distinctive visual presence with his impossibly large permed hair, thick beard and mustache, invariably dressed in jeans and a light-colored shirt.
As Carl Nagle, who hosts a Vermont public television show about painting, Wilson channels Ross’ distinctive persona not only visually but also spiritually. The casting feels dead-on, since Wilson has made a career specialty of playing laid-back, slightly dazed characters who seem stoned out of their minds even while perfectly sober.

“The folk era had died — or did it?” Allen Ginsberg asks, with a dash of whimsy, in the early portion of Martin Scorsese’s new Rolling Thunder Revue film. His observation accompanies the early, non-faked part of the movie, where we see Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Patti Smith, and even Bette Midler sandwiched into Folk City, a Greenwich Village club that had 170 seats and plenty of history. Although the film doesn’t provide any context, the occasion was a 61st birthday party for venue owner Mike Porco held in 1975, and...

Steve Earle and Joan Osborne will join Steve Forbert, Jackie Greene, and Anders Osborne for a special benefit concert benefiting the Blue Rose Foundation on October 18.
The acoustic and “in-the-round” show will be held at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ.
The Blue Rose Foundation believes that equal access to resources starts children on an early pathway to success, and strengthens our families and communities. By awarding preschool scholarships to children from economically disadvantaged families, they foster a life-long love of learning and provide the children with the tools to reach their full potential.

It's almost impossible to compare a small, independent film with today's no-holds-barred superhero blockbusters. However, if there's one thing that Noah Baumbach's "Frances Ha" manages to have in common with, say, "The Avengers," is secrecy. For the film -- which was shot in secret during 2011 and 2012 -- Baumbach decided to withhold parts of the script from the cast, providing them with only the scenes in which their characters appeared. This method appears to have paid off, as critics have been swooning over "Frances" since it premiered at Telluride Film Festival last fall. Of course, the secrecy factor is where the blockbuster comparisons end for "Frances Ha." The black-and-white movie follows Frances (Greta Gerwig), an aspiring 27-year-old dancer who is looking to come to grips with adulthood as she struggles to keep a job in New York City. Here, Baumbach offers some tips on shooting a secret film, talks about...

When music critics are nominating the latest “new Dylan," they usually focus on earnest guitar strummers such as Paul Simon, Steve Forbert, Billy Bragg or Conor Oberst. This ignores the fact that the majority of Dylan’s albums and almost all his live shows since 1966 have featured him as the leader of a loud, rootsy rock ‘n’ roll band. So who are Dylan’s true heirs? Who’s out there telling stories with lively language, iconoclastic aphorisms, evocative details, blues grooves, country twang and rock ‘n’ roll punch?...

In 1979, Steve Forbert released the album Jackrabbit Slim which featured the hit single "Romeo's Tune." Though the track became Forbert's signature song, an equally enduring composition from that package was included on a bonus 45 titled "The Oil Song." Originally, its lyrics documented early oil spills, one more horrific than the next. But with each passing decade, the song's topic has continued to be relevant, and it sadly gets updated by its author every few years to include the latest litany of petrol disasters. The following is an interview with Steve Forbert who discusses the evolution of "The Oil Song." During this conversation, the artist touches on related topics such as better energy sourcing, electric cars, coal, and a strong suggestion that James Cameron at least be consulted regarding this latest crisis. Also included is a chat with Tift Merritt...
