The Toronto International Film Festival will honor one of Canada’s own, Montreal native Shawn Levy, with the inaugural Norman Jewison Award, also named after another Canadian great filmmaker.
The Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award is presented by The Budman Family, and recognizes Canadians in the film industry who have made a global impact with their careers. The awards presentation will take place at the TIFF Tribute Awards gala fundraiser on Sunday, Sept. 10, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel.
Levy originally set about pursuing a career in acting, attending Yale University. He turned to directing and received an Mfa from the USC School of Cinematic Arts in 1994. One of Levy’s first acting gigs was the low-budget horror 1987 movie, Zombie Nightmare, which got poked at on an episode of Comedy Central’s Mystery Science Theater 3000. He cut his teeth directing wise with teen dramas like Nickelodeon’s The Secret...

Netflix has released the latest teaser trailer for All the Light We Cannot See, a WWII-set limited series based on the 2014 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, showing off the chemistry, drama and battles that helped make the source so popular.
Anthony Doerr’s sophomore novel proved to be a major success and has sold more than 15 million copies, so it was inevitable that a film or television adaptation of All the Light We Cannot See would be greenlit. Unveiled at Netflix’s Tudum event over the weekend, the teaser expands nicely on the previous look we got by offering the main characters’ voices for the first time, something that is crucial in the story.
The official plot for All the Light We Cannot See, as per Netflix: “Based on Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel of the same name, Shawn Levy’s epic four-part limited series takes viewers back in time to German-occupied Paris.

Netflix unveiled a behind-the-scenes featurette video for “All the Light We Cannot See,” a four-part series arriving in November.
Young Werner (Louis Hoffman) is a German soldier searching for radio signals in Nazi-occupied France when he hears the voice of Marie-Laure (Aria Mia Loberti) broadcasting on her uncle’s radio.
A montage of scenes featuring Marie-Laure hugging her father (Mark Ruffalo), looking down a stairwell and more set to “Clare de Lune” unfold, offering our first look at footage from the adaptation.

You have to hand it to Shawn Levy. Check out the teaser trailer here:
The series is set across World War II, primarily focusing on Aria Mia Liberty’s Marie-Laure LeBlanc, a blind French teenager seeking refuge in her uncle’s house; and Louis Hofmann’s Werner Pfennig, a German youngster drawn into the army after being accepted into military school for his radio technology skills. Ruffalo plays Marie-Laure’s father Daniel, with a magnificently-bearded Hugh Laurie has her great-uncle Etienne. There’s no dialogue in this teaser, but it’s certainly evocative – promising a grand, sweeping scope, moving between battlefields, aerial action, and Nazi-occupied towns. Through it all, the connection between Marie-Laure and Werner is set to anchor the story.
The limited series is due to hit Netflix on 2 November. Stay tuned to see if it lives up to the streaming service’s last wartime hit, All Quiet On The Western Front.
