There’s no doubting that the budgets and ambitions of music videos have dwindled since the glory days of MTV. We live in the age of TikTok-targeted ephemera. Yet miraculously, 2023 gave a much-needed shot of cinematic life to the form.
The best videos of the year emphasized meticulous technique over virality, offering intimate, impressionistic portraits of their respective artists’ interior lives and thoughts. Lana Del Rey and Lucy Dacus subverted Old Hollywood tropes, with a meta riff on studio system-era glamor and a lesbian tweaking of Wizard of Oz, respectively.
Others went bigger. Troye Sivan brought back the sheen and unabashed sexuality of Y2K pop princesses with a drag transformation that represents the performance of his career to date. Doja Cat took a maximalist approach to portraying the simultaneous highs and horrors of stardom, while Olivia Rodrigo constructed an elaborate, blood-splattered supernatural story to rival The Lost Boys.

In the offices of Dunder Mifflin (Scranton branch), salesmen, accountants and even Hr got together to decide once and for all: Is Hilary Swank hot or not? They’re referring to her looks, but one could just as easily be talking about her career. At what point was Hilary Swank hot in her career? In 2008, when the episode aired: Yeah. In the years between her Oscars? Not exactly. Now? No. So, let’s take a look and find out…Wtf Happened to…Hilary Swank?
But to truly understand what the fuck happened to Hilary Swank, we go back to the beginning. And the beginning began when she was born on July 30th, 1974, in Lincoln, Nebraska. As a youth, Swank bounced around a bit, going from Nebraska to Washington to California, developing a love for both gymnastics (Junior Olympian; state finalist) and acting (appearing in The Jungle Book at 9 as Mowgli...

Lana Del Rey drapes a few pieces of jewelry across her neck in the 10-minute-long music video for “Candy Necklace,” but none of them are made out of chalky, compressed sugars. They’re strings of pearls and high-quality silvers encrusted with diamonds and gemstones — the dressings of a true Hollywood starlet.
Over the course of the visual, directed by Rich Lee, Del Rey undergoes transformations into leading ladies like Marilyn Monroe and others who never made it to the big screen, including Elizabeth Short, otherwise known as the Black Dahlia.

Lana Del Rey has shared a new music video for “Candy Necklace,” a collaboration with Jon Batiste from her latest album, Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd.
Directed by Rich Lee, the 10-minute, black-and-white clip goes behind the scenes as Del Rey channels past Hollywood starlets including Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Short (better known as the Black Dahlia). “I just don’t know how to not be like a robot,” Del Rey says while wearing a Monroe-like wig. “I just need to shoot, shoot, shoot. It’s not working anymore for me.”
The dialogue flows right into Del Rey’s lyrics: “Sittin’ on the sofa, feelin’ super suicidal/ Hate to say the word, but, baby, hand on the Bible, I do/ Feel like it’s you the one who’s bringin’ me down.” Watch the video below.

A motion by city officials for Los Angeles to enter into a master lease with the Skid Row-adjacent Cecil Hotel for a permanent housing program to address homelessness on Thursday advanced in the Homeless and Poverty Committee.
The hotel, a historic building which has attracted public fascination for its sordid past, has been the inspiration for a number of film and TV productions. American Horror Story: Hotel, Season 5 of the FX anthology series created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, was based in part on the Cecil Hotel. The building was also the subject of the 2021 Netflix documentary series Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel, which explored the 2013 death of 21-year-old Canadian student found in the property’s water tank. In 2017, Investigation Discovery did a three-episode crime series called Horror at the Cecil Hotel.

By the time she was 21, actress Lupe Velez had worked with nearly all the top directors of the silent era, including D.W. Griffith (“Lady of the Pavements”), Lon Chaney (“Where East Is East”), and Cecil B. DeMille (“The Squaw Man”). Her first big break came from the King of Hollywood himself, Douglas Fairbanks, in 1927’s “The Gaucho.” She was star of an eight-film series at Rko Studios.

This week marks 15 years since “Zodiac” was released in theaters, and save for the actors looking 15 years younger than they do now, the film still feels like it could be released today. If anything, “Zodiac” feels more like a product of 2022 than 2007. The country is more obsessed with serial killers than ever before, with true crime podcasts and documentaries continuing to draw massive ratings, Zodiac killer memes being used in presidential primaries, and the latest Batman movie taking the form of a serial killer drama.
That makes it a great time to revisit “Zodiac,” as well as a good opportunity to take a deep dive into the making of the film. “Zodiac” attracted as much attention for its painstaking production process as it did for the finished product, as the always detail-oriented David Fincher went above and beyond to make sure everything in his film was historically accurate. Sometimes his...

This is an excerpt from Melissa Anderson’s Inland Empire, available to order from Fireflies Press.Like the Avenging Angel – the Nikki/Susan avatar who delivers a long soliloquy teeming with tales of imperilment – I often don’t know what was before or after in Inland Empire no matter how many times I’ve watched it. Recursive episodes proliferate in the film. At least three times Nikki/Susan dissociates, looking at another version of herself from another vantage point. At one point the Avenging Angel enters an empty movie palace, here a de facto hall of mirrors: she sees herself onscreen saying, ‘Watchin’ it, like in a dark theatre.’ That nearly vacant cinema instantly recalls Mulholland Drive’s Club Silencio, the mystical cabaret that Betty and Rita, desire-drunk after having sex, cab to in the middle of the night – and where their love story, if not their very identities, begins to unravel.

Netflix's Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel explores the strange and tragic case of Elisa Lam, a 21-year-old Canadian traveler who was found dead in the Cecil Hotel's water tank in early 2013. Lam's death, officially ruled an accidental drowning, was met with sensational speculation because of the Cecil's gruesome history. Given that the Cecil has been riddled with death and crime, many web sleuths were convinced by theories of ghosts and foul play. Episode two of Crime Scene especially unpacks how the hotel's dark past marred its reputation. Over the years, the Cecil has earned unsavory nicknames such as "Hotel Death" and "The Suicide." Management even rebranded part of the Cecil as a trendy youth hostel called "Stay on Main" to distance away from its unsettling background.
So, what were the unspeakable crimes at the Cecil? Whether or not the Cecil is haunted by ghosts, it has...

In Stephen King’s novel The Shining, the Overlook Hotel is an expansive structure with a dark past, located in the remote Rocky Mountains. Despite its opulent beginnings, the hotel becomes a place where brutal murders occur, madness sets in, ghosts lurk, and evil itself is a permanent occupant.
Relocate King’s Overlook to Downtown Los Angeles’ Skid Row, and you have its closest real-world equivalent: the Cecil Hotel. The hotel’s checkered history, and lore involving curses and ghosts, has made it a dark tourism landmark situated at the crossroads of true crime and paranormal fascination. But despite lots of interest on the internet, the Cecil, since rebranded as Stay on Main Hotel, has never officially permitted cameras inside for a paranormal investigation.
Until now. Enter Zak Bagans.

One of the reasons why American Horror Story remains must-watch terrifying TV is the way in which it craftily utilizes real-life figures in its otherwise fantastical story plots, from making the Black Dahlia, Elizabeth Short, one of the unfortunate victims to pass through the Murder House to the banquet of ghostly serial killers convening at the Hotel Cortez in season six. Moving from Devil's Night dinner guest to recurring nightmare in AHS: 1984 was Richard Ramirez, played in the latter season by Zach Villa as a reliably murderous presence at Camp Redwood, imbued with supernatural powers that made him unkillable. Which can't be far from how...

Two years after his death and 50 years after the infamous murders he orchestrated, Charles Manson is still fascinating some and inciting terror in others. This time, it’s in the form of two masks of his likeness that reportedly contain his cremated remains, as well as human blood.
This unusual project is a collaboration between artist Ryan Almighty and mask-maker Rick “Sik Rik” Fisher, and although anything Manson-related tends to be controversial, this particular piece has drawn new levels of ire.
“I’ve gotten a lot of death threats,” Almighty tells Rolling Stone.

The series has a lot of ground to cover in the George Hodel backstory, most of which directly affects how we see the main character, Fauna Hodel (India Eisley), his granddaughter. Jay Singletary (Chris Pine) covered the original trial. It destroyed his career. As he drops off...

True crime stories have taken off in the past several months, but the new TNT drama I Am the Night takes a slightly different tack: a semifictionalized story based on real criminal cases that have fascinated Americans for decades. The noir drama debuted on Jan. 27, and viewers are already wondering just how much of the eerie story is true. The answer is more complicated than a simple fact vs. fiction comparison.
I Am the Night is based on an autobiography by Fauna Hodel, titled One Day She'll Darken: The Mysterious Beginnings of Fauna Hodel. I Am the Night's Jefferson Mays gives his impression of a surrealistic killer.
TNT's limited series I Am the Night follows real life characters surrounding one of Hollywood's most famous infamous, and still unsolved, crimes: the January 15, 1947 murder of 22 years old actress Elizabeth Short. Dubbed the Black Dahlia, Short's body was found cut in half and mutilated in a vacant lot in Los Angeles. Authorities focused on about 25 suspects. No one was convicted.
I Am the Night is based on the book One Day She'll Darken: The Mysterious Beginnings of Fauna Hodel, written by the granddaughter of one of the prime suspects, Fauna Hodel, played by India Eisley in the series. Her biological mother Tamar Hodel was one of eleven children the real life Dr. George Hodel fathered by five women. Fauna and Tamar weren't the only family members to accuse the Beverly Hills gynecologist of the murder.

If your fascination with true crime rivals your infatuation with Chris Pine, then I Am the Night is the new obsession you've been waiting for. The six-part TNT miniseries portrays the real-life events of the 1947 Black Dahlia murder, and though some of the events and characters are fictionalized, the terrifying murder at the heart of the show is totally real.
Nicknamed "the Black Dahlia," Elizabeth Short was a 22-year-old waitress and aspiring actress living in Los Angeles when she was found brutally murdered in a vacant lot near Leimert Park in 1947, her body cut in half and severely mutilated. In the series, Jay Singletary attempts to figure out who could be behind the murder by tracking down a young woman named Fauna Hodel after receiving an anonymous tip. What does Fauna have to do with anything? Though the real-life Fauna Hodel didn't know about her connection...

I Am the Night exposes Dr. George Hodel, who was accused by his own son and granddaughter for being the Black Dahlia murderer.
I Am the Night tells the story of the characters who surround one of Hollywood's most famous homicides, and certainly the city of Los Angeles' longest and most infamous cold case: the Black Dahlia murder. TNT's new miniseries, directed by Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), gets some facts right, fudges others for dramatic continuity, and smashes a few to pulp. At one point in I Am the Night, investigative reporter Jay Singletary, played by Chris Pine, picks up a graphic compilation of tabloid news on the case to catch up on what's he's missed since covering it last. The grotesque unsolved homicide had grown to iconic status.

The Black Dahlia cold case takes a back seat to a coming of age story in TNT's I Am the Night.
Patty Jenkins, the director of Wonder Woman, flips the noir narrative in I Am the Night. In most film noir movies, going back to the forties, a hapless male is endangered by a femme fatale. Here all the fatal attractions grow stubble. From daddy dearest to the journalist who stars in series to the cops protecting her, Fauna Hodel is constantly at risk of death.
The series is based on the real life story of Fauna Hodel, the biological grandfather of Dr. George Hodel (Jefferson Mays), a renowned Los Angeles gynecologist who may also be one of the most heinous criminals in the history of Hollywood: The Black Dahlia murderer. We know this going in because it is telegraphed on almost every frame, but also because main character...

Finding a new way into an old story is a framework to which television is uniquely suited, but it’s also trickier than it may seem. A show can take its time delving into different chapters of any single narrative, broadening and deepening perspectives that other adaptations may have given short shrift. But in trying to be comprehensive, a show can also default to tried-and-true tropes by flattening the characters into facsimiles rather than fleshing them out as people.
Such is the conflict at play in “I Am the Night,” TNT’s ambitious new noir drama, created by Sam Sheridan and executive produced by “Wonder Woman” helmer Patty Jenkins (who directed the first two episodes). The limited series is inspired by the extraordinary real life of Fauna Hodel, a white girl who grew up in Nevada thinking she was mixed race after a wealthy family gave her to a black...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Return to Murder House,” the sixth episode of “American Horror Story: Apocalypse.”
It was finally here, “American Horror Story” fans. “Apocalypse’s” “Return to Murder House” was Jessica Lange’s first appearance on the show since “Freak Show.” Sarah Paulson has done an excellent job taking over as Ryan Murphy’s leading lady, but Lange is the grand dame of “Ahs” and expectations could not be higher. Luckily, Lange’s reprisal of Constance Langdon did not disappoint.
But before Ms. Lange’s highly anticipated appearance, Emma Roberts and Billy Porter were hilarious together as Madison and Chablis, posing as a married couple and buying the Murder House. Their facial expressions and one-liners during the meeting at the bank were worth the price of admission alone this week — “What can we say, the wife’s a sucker for a farmhouse kitchen?...

Brian De Palma celebrates his 78th birthday on September 11, 2018. While his films have ranged from the sublime to the atrocious, there’s no denying the impact he’s had on cinema. In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
De Palma began his filmmaking career directing underground features shot on a shoestring, many of which starred a young Robert De Niro. He came into his own with the Hitchcock-inspired thriller “Sisters” (1973), starring Margot Kidder as a pair of killer Siamese twins. The Master of Suspense would serve as a muse to De Palma throughout his career, influencing such films as “Obsession” (1976), “Dressed to Kill” (1980), “Blow Out” (1980) and “Body Double” (1984) both in style and substance.
He enjoyed his first box office success with “Carrie” (1976), an adaptation of Stephen King’s chilling novel about a shy teenager (Sissy Spacek) with telekinesis.

The more you watch The Black Dahlia the less it seems to be about the murder of Elizabeth Short and focuses instead on the effect it has upon those that have to deal with the grisly murder and their increasingly disturbing reactions. In reality the case of the Black Dahlia was never solved but it did cause a massive stir across the Us as people couldn’t help but wonder what kind of animal would chop a woman in half and slit her mouth open from ear to ear. It was one of the most gruesome murders on record even today,
