Lauren Bacall's death Tuesday at the age of 89 was a blow to fans of Hollywood's classic era.
The former Betty Joan Perske sashayed her way through any number of classic roles, though she said herself that her skill as an actress was frequently overshadowed by her relationship with Humphrey Bogart.
That said, to call the pair's onscreen chemistry "palpable" would be an understatement. "Everyone could see their love right there on celluloid," their son Stephen Bogart told People in 1996. "He was the great love of her life, and she his."
We've rounded up our favorite scenes of the two sharing the screen below.

Another sad day in Hollywood…
From the AP:
Lauren Bacall, the slinky, sultry-voiced actress who created on-screen magic with Humphrey Bogart in “To Have and Have Not” and “The Big Sleep” and off-screen magic in one of Hollywood’s most storied marriages, died Tuesday at age 89.
Bacall, whose long career brought two Tonys and a special Oscar, died in New York. The managing partner of the Humphrey Bogart Estate, Robbert J.F. de Klerk, said that Bacall died at home, but declined to give further details. Bacall’s son Stephen Bogart confirmed his mother’s death to de Klerk.
She was among the last of the old-fashioned Hollywood stars and her legend, and the legend of “Bogie and Bacall” — the hard-boiled couple who could fight and make up with the best of them — started almost from the moment she appeared on screen. A fashion model and bit-part New York actress...

Legendary screen siren Lauren Bacall died of a massive stroke at her home in Los Angeles on Tuesday morning.
Her death was confirmed by Robbert de Klerk, the co-managing partner of the Humphrey Bogart Estate with her son Stephen Bogart. In a statement he said: "She passed away peacefully earlier today in New York."
Her daughter, Leslie Bogart, said the family was not sharing any additional information at this time.
The 89-year-old actress has appeared in more than sixty films over her career and was best known for her distinctive smoky voice. Smart, sultry and witty - she was a beauty with brains and a devastating wit, always a highly assertive and sassy on screen presence who classed up every film she was in.
Her film debut was also one of her more memorable roles - she was 19 and co-starred with Humphrey Bogart in "To Have and Have Not". She...

Hollywood has lost a second iconic voice in less than 24 hours. Lauren Bacall, star of screen, stage and television, passed away at the age of 89 Tuesday. Born Betty Joan Perske in the Bronx, New York in 1924, Bacall was discovered by director Howard Hawks' wife Nancy after she saw a photo of her in Vogue magazine. After flying her across the country for a screen test, Hawks transformed Betty into Lauren and cast her opposite Humphrey Bogart in his classic 1944 drama "To Have and Have Not." And, as they say, "a star was born." Bacall was a fixture of the golden age of Hollywood appearing on screen opposite Bogart, her first husband, several more times including films such as "The Big Sleep" (1946), "Dark Passage" (1947) and "Key Largo" (1948). She also starred alongside Marilyn Monroe in "How to Marry A Millionaire" (1953), with John Wayne in "Blood Alley" (1955), with Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood...

Lauren Bacall, the sultry presence who first hit movie screens in 1944 and then went on to play a series of sophisticated, tough-as-nails roles for the next six decades - even in real life - has died, it has been confirmed to People. "Ms. Bacall passed away peacefully at her home in New York City earlier today," Robbert de Klerk, co-managing partner of the Humphrey Bogart estate, said Tuesday evening. Bacall's son, Stephen Bogart, personally told him the news. She was 89 and a longtime resident of Manhattan's Upper West Side. Launched by a Harper's Bazaar cover when she was a 19-year-old model,...

Rok Stars, the consumer products company co-founded by U.S. billionaire John Paul DeJoria and U.K. entrepreneur Jonathan Kendrick, has partnered with the Humphrey Bogart Estate to launch Bogart's Gin. John Paul DeJoria, who is no stranger to success in the spirits business, could not conceal his enthusiasm when discussing Bogart's Gin: "We have the world's best small-batch, hand-crafted artisanal gin! Botanically infused and distilled in England, each bottle will feature the name and face of Humphrey Bogart, one of the biggest Hollywood icons of all time and a true gin enthusiast. We cannot wait for people to hold the bottle and taste our gin. It's spectacular!" "My father loved gin," added Stephen Bogart, son of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, "so I am thrilled about this...

Humphrey Bogart movies: ‘The Maltese Falcon,’ ‘High Sierra’ (Image: Most famous Humphrey Bogart quote: ‘The stuff that dreams are made of’ from ‘The Maltese Falcon’) (See previous post: “Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall Movies.”) Besides 1948, 1941 was another great year for Humphrey Bogart — one also featuring a movie with the word “Sierra” in the title. Indeed, that was when Bogart became a major star thanks to Raoul Walsh’s High Sierra and John Huston’s The Maltese Falcon. In the former, Bogart plays an ex-con who falls in love with top-billed Ida Lupino — though both are outacted by ingénue-with-a-heart-of-tin Joan Leslie. In the latter, Bogart plays Dashiel Hammett’s private detective Sam Spade, trying to discover the fate of the titular object; along the way, he is outacted by just about every other cast member, from Mary Astor’s is-she-for-real dame-in-distress to Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nominee Sydney Greenstreet. John Huston...

Last week I got to sail on the actual African Queen with Bogart—Stephen Bogart, that is. The occasion was the first annual Humphrey Bogart Film Festival, held in Key Largo, Florida, the setting of the 1948 Bogart-Bacall picture Key Largo. My sailing companion was Stephen Humphrey Bogart, the famous couple’s son, who hosted the festival. Much like the TCM Classic Film Festival one week earlier, this event drew movie buffs from all over the country—along with two avid fans from Sydney, Australia—to watch vintage films on a big screen, even outdoors at night, and to meet Stephen, as well as Jack Huston, the grandson of Bogie’s friend and collaborator John Huston. Stephen has worked in...

Humphrey Bogart as indie-film booster? It could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Writer-director Steve Anderson (“The Big Empty,” “Fuck”) has convinced the Humphrey Bogart Estate to help finance his micro-budget noir, “This Last Lonely Place,” according to the WSJ’s MarketWatch. The filmmaker has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $75,000 for his original thriller about three lost souls who find their worlds colliding in an L.A. cab, and not only has the Bogie Estate thrown $10,000 to the cause, it has committed to matching every additional donation. Bogart LLC majority owners Stephen Bogart and his sister Leslie see the investment as a way to support the kinds of films their father most liked. From the story: "The main goal of the Humphrey Bogart Estate is to honor and promote my father's legacy," said Stephen Humphrey Bogart, son of the iconic performer. "My father loved film noir, he...

Chicago – Every seasoned movie lover can attest to having a favorite shot in Michael Curtiz’s 1942 classic “Casablanca,” a picture practically overflowing with indelible imagery. The first appearance of freedom fighter-turned-café owner Rick (Humphrey Bogart) decked out in a white tux, the tearful letter that turns to literal tears in a rainstorm, the final walk through the fog…all unforgettable.
Yet the shot that remains closest to my heart is the one that lingers on the face of Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), as she becomes hopelessly lost in the evocative notes and lyrics of a song from her past. No actress embodies earthy sensuality and misty-eyed passion quite like Bergman, who was at the peak of her luminous beauty at age 26. Her trancelike state of nostalgic longing never fails to mesmerize me, as her eyes convey what words could only feebly articulate.
Blu-ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
