Many of the current generation of Asian and Pacific Islander writers working in television today came up through the Cape New Writers Fellowship, one of the most successful entry-level programs in the industry.
Now, the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment is expanding its focus to the other end of the pipeline. The Cape Showrunners Incubator, powered by Starz’s #TakeTheLead diversity initiative for its inaugural year, will draw upon the nonprofit’s experience in talent development to give upper-level Api TV scribes the mentorship and other resources they need to break through that final ceiling.
“Showrunners and creative executives are the two main drivers of what ultimately ends up on screen, and this incubator is the perfect complement to the Cape Leaders Fellowship for creative executives if we want to change the stories that are told in mainstream media,” Cape executive director Michelle K. CBS’s “MacGyver” reboot will end with its currently airing fifth season, the network announced Wednesday.
“All of us at CBS are extremely grateful for the incredible work and dedication from Lucas and the rest of the cast, as well as Monica, the writers and the entire crew,” CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl said in a statement. “The MacGyver team traveled far and wide to repeatedly save the world with little more than bubble gum and a paper clip and made this show distinctly their own. Exclusive: The Asian and Asian American community in the country has had a rough couple of weeks. One could also argue they have had a rough couple of years — or even decades — since the first Asian set foot on the soil of America. Nonetheless, now is the time for authentic, humanizing representation of Asian and Asian Americans to bolster community morale and to bring light to a time when things seem so dark.
The Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (Cape) and major industry partners have launched the ninth annual Cape New Writers Fellowship, the premier non-studio professional development program that trains emerging writers to succeed in Hollywood. The fellowship boasts multiple showrunners and graduates that have been staffed on over 50 shows across all major network, cable, and streaming platforms.
Led by top industry writers, producers, agents and executives, the Fellowship was co-founded and is co-chaired by Steve Tao and Leo Chu. The sessions include master classes, panels, and workshops, as well as writing labs, in which Fellows revise their scripts under one-on-one mentorship with high-level industry professionals.
This year’s mentors and speakers include Monica Macer, Melinda Hsu Taylor, Sunil Nayar, Teresa Hsiao, Alexander Woo, Albert Kim, Tanuj Chopra, Kyle Harimoto, Jason Ning, Vicky Luu, Cherry Chevapravatdumrong, Nazrin Choudhury, and April Shih, who has the special distinction of being the first alumni of the Cape Fellowship to return as a mentor.
“For the past 30 years, Cape has fought to break barriers in entertainment for our stories to be heard because we all know racism is not new,” said Michelle K. Sugihara, Cape Executive Director. “Dehumanizing tropes in media such as the Yellow Peril, Perpetual Foreigner, and Model Minority leads directly to physical violence against us in the real world, which is why this is more than a representation issue, it’s a social justice issue.”
The participants of the 2021 Cape New Writers Fellowship are:
Bryson Chun is a Hawaiian filmmaker who has produced films that have screened for PBS, The Smithsonian Museum, The Criterion Collection, and festivals worldwide. He was a screenwriting fellow for Sundance, imagineNATIVE, LA Skins, and ‘Ohina Labs. Most recently, he was selected for The Blacklist’s Inaugural Indigenous List, which spotlights some of the best Indigenous film and television writers working within the U.S. Darek Cioch is a Korean and Polish American writer from Seattle. After studying film at the University of California, Santa Barbara, he began his entertainment career working for Anonymous Content and HBO. Since then he has been a writers’ assistant for television shows on ABC, NBC and FX. Darek is currently a researcher on FX’s Impeachment: American Crime Story. Jane Yubin Kim is a Korean American writer and performer based in Los Angeles.
After graduating from Ucsb where she studied film, she worked in post production and regularly performed and wrote comedy at the Upright Citizens’ Brigade, where she was a Ucb Diversity scholarship recipient. Following the firing of MacGyver showrunner Peter Lenkov earlier this month, star Lucas Till has now opened up about the toxic environment on the set of the CBS series that left him feeling “suicidal.”
While speaking to Vanity Fair Magazine, Till – also known for playing Alex Summers/Havok in the X-Men movies – says he was the victim of bullying, verbal abuse and body shaming by Lenkov, who was severed from his deal with the network this July following a complaint and subsequent investigation against him.
Till recalled his terrible experience making the first season of the hit show, a revival of the classic 80s/90s series starring Richard Dean Anderson in the title role, as so:
“I’ve never worked this hard in my life, and I am fine with hard work. But the way Peter treats people is just unacceptable. I was suicidal that first year on the show,...

The journey for Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez‘s Netflix series Gentefied started off as a web series that premiered at Sundance in 2017 that never saw its time on the Internet — at least as a web series it didn’t. Instead, it premiered on the streaming giant as a full-blown series putting a spotlight on the Latinx community and, as the title suggests, the hot topic of gentrification.
The series, which is executive produced by America Ferrera and has Monica Macer as showrunner, is drenched in Latinx identity as it features brown love, intersectionality, the importance of community and the nuanced arguments that come with the topic of gentrification as well as displaced communities.
Gentefied follows three cousins, Erik (J.J. Soria), Ana (Karrie Martin) and Chris (Carlos Santos) as they try to save their grandfather, Pop’s (Joaquín Cosío) Boyle Heights taco shop as the...

Partnering with major industry partners, Cape will launch the professional development program which trains emerging writers to succeed in Hollywood.
“As reflected by the Asian and Pacific Islander sweep of the Oscars screenwriting awards last night (original and adapted), it is clear stories written by our community have mainstream appeal,” said Michelle K. Sugihara, Cape Executive Director. “Pipeline programs like the Cape New Writers Fellowship are critical to provide a springboard into the industry and to elevate authentic storytelling.”
Led by top industry writers, producers, agents and executives, the Fellowship was co-founded and is co-chaired by Steve Tao and Leo Chu (Creator/Showrunner of Supah Ninjas and Afro Samurai; Batman Ninja screenwriter).

Netflix may have disappointed Latinx viewers when it canceled the beloved “One Day at a Time,” but the streamer is hoping the dynamic new series “Gentefied” will help mitigate the pain. Netflix is leaning into its strengths in 2020. Not only is the streaming giant pumping out dozens, if not hundreds of new shows, but many of their original series meet the demand illustrated by past successes or fill holes left by departing favorites.
So is there a new “Stranger Things” on the horizon? Perhaps a worthy follow-up to “Orange Is the New Black?” What about a replacement for syndicated sitcoms like “The Office” and “Friends”? You better believe Netflix is working to give subscribers what they want, and the below 2020 preview should illustrate exactly that.
With more competition than ever from Disney and Apple, and even more services on the way (hello HBO Max and Peacock), 2020 will be a critical year for the current king of streaming. So here’s what they’re working with:
“Locke and Key”
Release Date: Friday, February 7
Cast: Darby Stanchfield, Jackson Robert Scott, Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones,...
