Deadline is reporting that filmmaker Tim Story, whose credits include Ride Along 2 and Kevin Hart: What Now?, has been elected director on New Line’s Shaft reboot.
Truth be told, it’s the first tangible sign of progress on the studio’s long-gestating redo in quite some time – more than a year ago, New Line brass stressed their desire to reinvent the story of Richard Roundtree’s iconic private eye, favoring drama over comedy and high-octane action – though there’s still no mention of an actor to take on the title role. Gordon Parks first brought the character to the silver screen back in 1971, before Samuel L. Jackson toed the line between cop and criminal in the John Singleton-directed 2000 remake.

Exclusive: New Line has set Tim Story to direct its reboot of Shaft, continuing the lore of the iconic private eye John Shaft originated by Richard Roundtree in the 1971 Gordon Parks-directed film. Samuel L. Jackson played his nephew in the John Singleton-directed 2000 remake. The new film has a script by Kenya Barris and Alex Barnow, and John Davis, Ira Napoliello and Barris are producing. New Line is keeping the plot under the cone, but I’ve heard the idea is to…...

We live in an age when reboots are ordered as frivolously as a pizza by a stoner. So, it.s no longer surprising to hear that a beloved franchise is going to get a modern update, even if one was previously released just 15 years ago. That.s exactly the case with Shaft, which has been greenlit by New Line. However, there is one major difference from the previous Shaft films. This one will be a comedy. The Hollywood Reporter were the first to confirm that Shaft is being remade, while they also revealed that Kenya Barris will write the screenplay alongside Alex Barnow. The pair have previously worked in television, as Barria created Black-ish, and Barnow is an executive producer/writer on The Goldbergs. Meanwhile, John Davis and Ira Napoliello are producing Shaft, with Davis having worked in this role most recently on The Man From U.N.C.L.

With its Vacation remake out this Friday, New Line is already reaching back to the ’70s to dust off another title. Shaft, the cult 1971 Blaxploitation flick starring Richard Roundtree, is being remade with a new script from Black-ish creator Kenya Barris and Alex Barnow, an executive producer-writer on ABC’s The Goldbergs.
John Davis, who produced The Man From U.N.C.L.E. as well as the upcoming Victor Frankenstein, will produce this new take alongside Ira Napoliello.
The plan is for Shaft to adhere to the action roots of the original while adopting a comedic tone – perhaps in line with Sony’s 21 Jump Street remakes.
The original film centered on a private detective (Roundtree) who was hired to find a missing girl in Harlem. It attracted praise and criticism for its place in the Blaxploitation genre – though films like Shaft seemed to empower black individuals and afford black actors the opportunities to...

"Black-ish" creator Kenya Barris and "The Goldbergs" executive producer Alex Barnow are teaming to pen the script for a new reboot of 1970s blaxploitation franchise "Shaft" at New Line.
Richard Roundtree starred in the original as a private detective hired to find a missing girl in Harlem, and became iconic for several reasons including Isaac Hayes' soundtrack.
John Singleton starred in a 2000 reboot with Samuel L. Jackson in the role which was actually the nephew of the character. Whilst that one had a relatively serious tone, this new one is said to be more comedic.
John Davis and Ira Napoliello will produce the new version. Davis opens another franchise reboot - "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." - in two weeks.

20th Century Fox and Davis Entertainment are planning a new film adaptation of Alan Moore's acclaimed historical fantasy comic series "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen".
The first volume of the original work is set in a steampunk Victorian London where literary characters are real. In the story Mina Murray, Allan Quatermain, Captain Nemo, the Invisible Man and Dr. Jekyll team up to stop a war between two tyrannical villains (James Moriarty, Fu Manchu) for control of London.
The work was previously and very loosely adapted in 2003 into a feature that proved to be Sean Connery's final appearance in a live-action film. The hope was the film would launch a franchise, but reviews were bad and the film pulled in only $180 million worldwide.
An attempt was made to adapt the property into a TV series in 2013, but the show was not ordered to series. John Davis is on board...

Alan Moore will be delighted! After one disastrous movie and a TV series attempt back in 2013, Fox is having another crack at the notoriously grouchy writer's The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. According to Variety (confirming a report from The Tracking Board), the studio is planning another big-screen outing for Allan Quatermain, Mina Harker, Dr. Jekyll and the rest of the motley crew of Victorian-era literary icons. There are three full volumes of The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen and several accompanying miniseries too, so Fox will have plenty to mine from. The later stories saw the introduction of characters as diverse as Sherlock Holmes, Mary Poppins, and even a demonic incarnation of Harry Potter. John Davis is producing through his Davis Entertainment banner, with Ira Napoliello and Matt Reilly overseeing production of the reboot.

Fox is taking another crack at Alan Moore's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The Tracking Board is reporting that a new film based on the comic is in the works, with Ira Napoliello, Matt Reilly and Davis Entertainment's John Davis producing. TB says Fox is "looking to nail the new adaptation of League, and is currently looking for a director to continue to develop the reboot." The reboot will have no connection to the 2003 big screen adaptation,...

20th Century Fox has plans to reboot 2003's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Variety reports. John Davis is set to produce, and Ira Napoliello and Matt Reilly are helping facilitate the project. Like the flick with Sean Connery, this one will be based on Alan Moore, Kevin O'Neill, and Bill Oakley's comic-book series, which essentially had literary characters turn into steampunk Avengers and kick ass together in Victorian England. The 2003 movie was Connery's last live-action commitment before he retired, so he probably won't be coming back for this one as Allan Quatermain. But that doesn't mean we can't dream.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is the latest property to join the queue of forthcoming reboots.
According to Variety, 20th Century Fox is planning to remake Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's graphic novel of the same name which started in 1999.
John Davis, Ira Napoliello and Matt Reilly will oversee the project, which centres on characters from Victorian fiction such as Captain Nemo, the Invisible Man and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Sean Connery starred in the 2003 movie - his last lead movie role before retiring - alongside Naseeruddin Shah, Peta Wilson, Tony Curran, Stuart Townsend, Shane West, Jason Flemyng and Richard Roxburgh.
In 2013, a put pilot television adaptation of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was developed but never made it to series.

20th Century Fox is taking another stab at turning Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen into a film franchise, it was reported today. The studio is producing a new film based on the influential graphic novel series, to be overseen by Ira Napoliello and Matt Reilly, and produced by John Davis of Davis Entertainment. The graphic novel series was previously adapted to film by Fox in 2003. That movie debuted at number 2 behind the first Pirates…...

Ah, The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. That much-maligned 2003 superhero effort, spawned from Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill’s graphic novels, that failed to generate much love either from fans, critics or – given its eventual $179 million global haul from a $78 million budget, not counting marketing – the box office bean counters. 20th Century Fox thinks there’s life in the property yet and is trying another movie. Moore and O’Neil’s alt-history stories follow a group of literary characters – Alan Quatermain, Captain Nemo, Doctor Jekyll and Dracula’s Mina Harker among them – as they band together to fight off monstrous threats to the realm. It would seem to be fertile fodder for a movie, but that first attempt, which had Stephen Norrington directing a cast including Sean Connery and Jason Flemyng, just didn’t seem able to take full advantage of it. According to Deadline, Fox has a producing team including Ira Napoliello,...

Fox has picked up an untitled action spec from scribe Robert Lynn. John Davis is attached to produce via his Fox-based Davis Entertainment banner. The logline is being (frustratingly) kept under wraps. Ira Napoliello will oversee the project for Davis Entertainment. Jason Young will oversee the project for Fox. Davis produced Chronicle, the surprise hit released earlier this year that proved to be trampolines for actor Dane DeHaan and director Josh Trank. Other recent credits include Mr. Popper's Penguins and Gulliver's Travels. Lynn last year wrote The Envoy, which was acquired by Warner Bros. with Silver Pictures producing. That

Davis Entertainment has picked up a comedy pitch from newcomer scribe Jeff Morris for a low six figures.
Though Davis is keeping the plot under wraps, Morris' pitch is in the vein of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", said Derek Dauchy, the production company's president.
"We love Jeff. He's got a great new comedic voice," Dauchy said.
Morris inked the deal Davis in late April. Davis has a first-look deal with Fox for the project. Dauchy is producing, along with John Davis and Ira Napoliello.
This is the first sale for Morris, a former bartender and political science major at Arizona State University. He wrote and directed the indie film "You Did What?" which won the Orson Welles Award for outstanding achievement for a first-time director at the Tiburon International Film Fest.
He is repped by Zero Gravity Management.
Davis' production credits include the highly successful "Alien vs. Predator" series for Fox, as well as "I, Robot", "Garfield" and "The Heartbreak Kid".
