Martha Plimpton (Generation) is set for a season-long arc on Sprung, IMDb TV’s new single-camera comedy, in a recasting. The series hails from My Name Is Earl, Raising Hope and The Guest Book creator Greg Garcia, 3 Arts and Amazon Studios.
Plimpton joins previously cast Garret Dillahunt and Philip Garcia in Sprung, which follows an unlikely group of formerly incarcerated people who band together to use their criminal expertise for good.
She will play Rooster’s mom Barb, replacing Ileana Douglas, who originally was cast in the role. The decision to recast was made due to a creative change to the character.
Sprung reunites Plimpton with Dillahunt and EP Garcia, with whom she worked on Raising Hope, for which she earned an Emmy nomination.
Sprung follows Jack (Dillahunt), a convicted criminal who is determined to change course and reclaim his lost years after serving more than two decades in prison.

Building off the success of the recent films "No Good Deed" and "Ride Along," producer Will Packer has turned his sights to television, where he's developing an autobiographical comedy for NBC, entitled "Like Father, Like Son." The series, written by Michael Pennie ("Raising Hope"), is inspired by events from Packer's life, and centers on a recently divorced man in his early thirties who is just starting to enjoy the benefits of being young, successful and single when he learns he has a fifteen-year-old son from a one-night-stand he had in college. NBC has a first-look deal on the half-hour comedy produced by Will Packer Productions...

Universal Television has closed about a half-dozen overall deals over the past few weeks, with several more in the works. The completed pacts include renewals for Peter Berg & Sarah Aubrey’s production company Film 44 and writers Alexandra Cunningham and Michael Pennie and first-time agreements with Victor Fresco new Sarah Watson. The brisk deal-making comes months after NBC announced its plans to reestablish its production arm into a full-fledged studio, renamed it Universal Television and tapped Bela Bajaria to run it. Bajaria said the replenishing of the studio’s talent roster is part of “the long-term goal to rebuild Universal Television into a major supplier of quality, ground-breaking, successful dramas and comedies.” Last summer, the studio stepped up to re-up The Office and Parks & Recreation executive producer Greg Daniels and sign a pod deal with Peter Traugott. Both pacts resulted in pilots this season — Daniels wrote and executive produces comedy...

Exclusive: Comedy writer-producer Michael Pennie has signed a new two-year overall deal with Universal Television. Pennie first inked a deal at the studio (then Ums) in 2010 when he was coming off a stint as a co-executive producer on the NBC/20th TV comedy series My Name Is Earl. Under his pact with Ums, he served as a co-executive producer of the studio’s NBC comedy series Outsourced. This season, CAA-repped Pennie has been loaned out to 20th TV where he reunited with My Name Is Earl creator Greg Garcia, serving as a co-executive producer on his latest comedy series, Fox’s Raising Hope.

"Outsourced" co-executive producer Michael Pennie has closed a two-year overall deal with Universal Media Studios.
Pennie served as co-executive producer on NBC's "My Name Is Earl" before coming aboard "Outsourced," which joins the network's Thursday night comedy block this fall. The show is about a manager sent to India to oversee a staff of customer service reps.
"Ums are willing to take some chances," Pennie said. " 'Outsourced' is an example of their willingness to try something different in a year where there's a lot out there that feels like versions of stuff I've seen before, and that's definitely something I'm attracted to."
Ums recently inked overall deals with former "Earl" writer-producer Danielle Sanchez-Witzel and former "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" writers Sonny Lee and Patrick Walsh.
The agreement marks the first overall deal for the CAA-repped Pennie, who also wrote for the CBS comedy "Yes, Dear." Pennie plans to focus...

The most buzzed-about new comedies of the fall, ABC's "Modern Family" and NBC's "Community," are single-camera shows. And all major comedy-series Emmys for the past two years have gone to single-camera shows.
But multicamera comedies are hotter than they have been in years. They dominated early pitch sales in the summer, sparking heated bidding and landing major commitments.
Of the comedy projects with production commitments so far this season, only Greg Garcia's "Keep Hope Alive" at Fox is single-camera. A number of production commitments have gone to multicamera projects, including Mark Brazill's "The Rednecks & Romeos" at Fox, Matt Tarses' "True Love" at CBS and Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith's "18 Years" at ABC, with several more pending.
"Multicamera comedy is absolutely making a comeback this development season," said Glenn Adilman, head of comedy at Sony TV, which is behind a number of high-profile new multicamera projects, including "True Love" and "18 Years.
