Antonio Gambale led the winners at Tuesday’s Screen Music Awards, picking up two prizes for his work on Netflix’s Unorthodox.
This year’s ceremony, jointly staged by Apra Amcos and the Australian Guild of Screen Composers, was virtual, hosted by Justine Clarke, Meyne Wyatt and Claudia Karvan.
Clarke used the opportunity to urge government to support the industry, in particular screen composers, in the wake of Covid-19.
“I implore all of you listening, and in particular the Federal Government, not to leave the Australian composers behind as you undertake industry reform.
“There remains a huge opportunity for the Australian Government to further invest in the creation and commissioning of Australian content, and in particular, our composers, to fully celebrate their skills and talent. There is now greater risk that our creatives, our composers, and our small businesses will be left behind in the fast-changing global landscape that is ahead of us.

Composer, orchestrator and conductor Nerida Tyson-Chew will receive the 2020 Distinguished Services to the Australian Screen Award at the Screen Music Awards in December.
The prize, presented by the Apra Amcos board of directors, will recognise Tyson-Chew’s 35 year career, blazing a path for female composers, and her diverse and extensive portfolio of work, spanning feature films, television dramas, children’s productions, documentaries and wildlife films.
Tyson-Chew’s recent credits include H is for Happiness, for which she is currently nominated for an Aacta, as well as the BAFTA-nominated animated series The Deep, Rescue – Special Ops, Batman – The Animated Series and Taboo.

Cinematographer Greig Fraser has won a Creative Arts Emmy for his work on Disney+’s The Mandalorian, ‘Chapter 7: The Reckoning’.
Fraser shares the award for Outstanding Cinematography for a Single Camera Series (Half Hour) with frequent collaborator and co-dop, New Zealander Barry ‘Baz’ Idoine.
The Mandalorian is the pair’s second venture into the Star Wars universe, having previously worked together on Rogue One, with Fraser Dop and Idoine heading second unit.

A main title sequence is often the only part of a show in which music can take center stage, and usually for just a minute. But it can also be the biggest challenge for a composer, who must somehow encapsulate the ideas, the story, the characters and the milieu of a series. This year, the Television Academy nominated six main title themes by five different composers. As Emmy voting draws to a close, the 2020 music nominations span rookies to regulars. Martin Phipps landed his sixth nomination overall for the dramatic score to Netflix’s “The Crown.” Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and his scoring partner Atticus Ross nabbed a nomination for their first series, HBO’s “Watchmen.” Emmy fave “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” grabbed another music supervision nom, while composers Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore landed their first for music and lyrics.

From the outset, Antonio Gambale’s unsettling score for Netflix’s limited series, “Unorthodox” gets under our skin with its twisted strings and synthesizers. And that’s how it should be, introducing us to the riveting story of Esty (Shira Haas), the young woman who escapes from the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to Berlin in search a new life. For the Italian-Australian composer, who is Emmy-nominated for both his score and main title theme, it’s a breakout work and quite a departure from his high-octane synth contributions to “The Grand Master” and “Taken.”
Gambale had to rethink his aesthetic for the sensitive, predominantly Yiddish-language drama from showrunner Anna Winger and director Maria Schrader, inspired by Deborah Feldman’s 2012 memoir, “Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots.” “You’re almost in documentary territory with the responsibility you have toward the music,” he said. “You have to be careful not to be melodramatic.

At 25, Shira Haas would be the youngest Best Movie/Limited Actress winner at the Emmys in 50 years, since a 23-year-old Patty Duke prevailed for the 1970 movie “My Sweet Charlie.” 1958 and 1978 are the only other years that the award has gone to actresses in their 20s: 27-year-old Polly Bergen for “Playhouse 90” and 29-year-old Meryl Streep for “Holocaust” respectively. Haas broke through with her performance in “Unorthodox,” which was her American television debut. The four-episode miniseries from Netflix follows Haas’s character Esty Shapiro as she runs off to a new life in Berlin, leaving behind her family and ultra-Orthodox Jewish upbringing in New York.

This year’s crop was the most diverse in memory. More than one-fourth of all the music nominees are people of color, and more than half are first-time nominees for television’s highest honor.
Said Academy governor Rickey Minor, who’s nominated twice this year for his music direction of “The Oscars” and “The Kennedy Center Honors”: “Living through this time in our history, has made us all awaken to the truth that we — as a humanity — are all the same.
