At half-time on Saturday at St James’ Park, Swansea City manager Garry Monk made one slight adjustment to his side, dropping Jack Cork slightly deeper and giving Jefferson Montero more of a licence to head forward, and suddenly the game was over for Newcastle United. John Carver’s plan unravelled before his very eyes – and he did not have the tactical nous to be able to claw the match back, as the Magpies succumbed to a 3-2 loss that left them just five points above the dropzone with four games remaining.
Unfortunately, as much as Toon fans may have wanted local-boy John Carver to succeed, it simply hasn’t happened – and, for the good of the club he loves, it is time he stepped aside and let someone else try to salvage something from the wreckage that is Newcastle United right now and keep the Magpies up.

Aston Villa are in a slump – a slump that has lasted the bones of four years. It was only half a decade ago that the club were consistently challenging for the European places, recording three sixth-placed finishes in a row under Martin O’Neill. Since then, their assets have been stripped and the supporters have been forced to watch the mind-numbing dirge on display from managers Gerard Houllier, Alex McLeish and Paul Lambert.
The multi-million pound superstars are gone, and in their place are a host of raw, unfurnished youth prospects. What of those who weren’t deemed good enough for the club during their surge towards the upper echelons of the Premier League table? With the club forced to dip into the bargain basement for old-timers and never-beens, such as Joe Cole and Philippe Senderos, suddenly those cast-offs don’t look so unappealing now.

Sadly for Liverpool fans, the start of the Premier League in 1992 coincided with the end of twenty years of dominance by the Reds: the 1970s and 1980s had been bossed by them, but now they had to sit back and watch bitter rivals Manchester United conquer all that stood before them.
Despite this, there have still been numerous impressive campaigns by Liverpool over the last 22 years. Ok, that elusive first league title since 1990 continues to elude them, but considering their expectations have been lower than in previous decades, they have achieved great things at times. Gerard Houllier, Rafa Benitez and Brendan Rodgers have all created excellent Reds teams during their time in charge- the hope is that the latter will turn his current crop into champions one day- becoming one of the country’s most formidable teams along the way.
Selecting a top five is harder than it may seem,...

Since the Premier League’s inception in 1992, Liverpool have never been reluctant to spend money. Brendan Rodgers spent over £100m during the most recent summer transfer window, while the likes of Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez also broke the bank during their time in charge.
Between them and fellow Reds managers during the Premier League era Graeme Souness, Roy Evans, Roy Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish, they have signed many players for hefty fees, some of whom have been roaring successes and others who have failed spectacularly.
On the flip side, there are those players who have ended up being signed on the cheap, certainly in terms of their respective ability, before becoming Reds heroes and, in a few cases, legends.
With that in mind, here are the 11 Liverpool Premier League Signings Who Proved To Be Bargains.

During the Premier League era, Liverpool have been a club who are known to spend money. This summer alone, manager Brendan Rodgers topped the £100M mark, bringing in the likes of Adam Lallana and Mario Balotelli to strengthen Liverpool’s squad as they plot a title challenge.
Rodgers has continued a tradition from former managers Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez who also weren’t afraid to splash the cash at Anfield, but his predecessors did so with mixed results.
There’s been many a player in the past who the Reds have well and truly over-paid for, with the £35M they paid for Andy Carroll undoubtedly the worst, along with fees paid for the likes of El Hadji Diouf and Djbril Cisse.
However, the Reds are no strangers to bargains either and have signed some of the world’s best players for a cut...

Aston Villa striker Darren Bent is undergoing a medical at Fulham ahead of his proposed £5 million move to Craven Cottage, according to Sky Sports sources.
The 29-year-old was reportedly the subject of a £4 million bid from the Cottagers last month, which was rejected by Villa, leading to Fulham’s improved offer.
Bent was a peripheral figure at Villa Park last summer, playing second fiddle to new signing Christian Benteke and making just the 16 Premier League appearances under manager Paul Lambert.
And with Benteke committing himself to the Midlands club having earlier handed in a transfer request, it appears as though Villa are finally prepared to offload a player they paid Sunderland £24 million for back in 2011.
Bent was signed under the Gerard Houllier era and has been something of a flop since, scoring just 25 times in 64 appearances.
And the fact that Villa are taking a £19 million hit on the player only...
