John Rea(II)
- Music Department
- Composer
- Soundtrack
John Rea was educated at Cardiff University, where he studied
composition and film scoring technique under the tutorship of Prof.
Alun Hoddinott CBE, graduating with an M.Mus. He is a
multi-instrumentalist and highly skilled orchestrator, with a deep
interest in contemporary dance and electronic music. He runs his own
digital 16-track recording studio in Cardiff.
John enjoys working in the grey area where classical, jazz and pop styles and techniques meet and cross-fertilise, and can turn his hand to anything from traditionally scored orchestral music to hardcore Jungle. This is mirrored in a recent new work, 'Bright Lights Big City' for string orchestra, piano, rap artist, operatic soprano, turntables and samplers, featured on an S4C programme dedicated to John.
Having accumulated a large number of television credits, John is emerging as a much sought-after composer for film. John's score for the feature One of the Hollywood Ten, starring Greta Scacchi, Peter Bowles and John Sessions, was released on CD on the DiscMedi label
His television drama credits include Mostyn Fflint for S4C, Scottish Television's feature-length The Last Musketeer, starring Robson Green, the 10-part series The Chosen (HTV/Danish TV) and Life & Debt (HTV). His score for BBC Wales' David was nominated for a Welsh BAFTA Award for 'Best Music'.
John has worked on a huge variety of natural history, documentary and entertainment productions, several of his scores having won awards. John also has experience of scoring animated productions, including The Baaas, a 52-part series for S4C, about a family of all-singing, all-dancing sheep. John is currently scoring CBBC's new take on one of the most popular literary figures, with their production of Young Dracula.
John's technical facility and his ability to deliver high-quality scores efficiently, within budget and on time make him an invaluable asset - as does his keen dramatic sensitivity. Whatever the project, John brings a high level of creative intelligence and a distinctive voice.
