Garry Keane and Stephen Gerard Kelly’s documentary In The Shadow Of Beirut, which is Ireland’s Oscar category this year, is headed to the Red Sea International Film Festival, running November 30 to December 9 in the Red Sea port of Jeddah.

The documentary is among six titles selected for the New Vision line-up alongside Jurgen Buedts and Sahim Omar Kalifa biodoc The Iraq’s Invisible Beauty about Iraqi photographer Latif Al Ani, which world premieres at the Red Sea, and Thien An Pham’s first feature Inside The Yellow Cocoon Shell which won Camera d’Or at Cannes this year.

Right out of the gate, Ric Roman Waugh’s Kandahar sets up a potentially cataclysmic case of American foreign intervention. The film opens with C.I.A. operative Tom Harris (Gerard Butler) destroying a clandestine Iranian nuclear facility with minimal difficulty, and despite his thin cover as an ISP technician. This is the kind of action that could kick off a hot war, but instead things pivot quickly into a more restrained manhunt as the Revolutionary Guards quickly figure out Tom’s true identity and launch a small unit to capture the man as he works a different mission in Afghanistan. With his cover blown, Tom must cross a hostile nation to an evacuation point, avoiding Afghan and Iranian pursuers in equal fashion.
This is the third collaboration between Butler and Waugh, but the slight whimsicality of Angel Has Fallen is nowhere to be found in this more downbeat survival thriller. Yet...

Until recently, Leila Farzad was asked to read, repeatedly, for the same kind of role. “There were a lot of terrorist wives that I was put up for, and that was how I saw myself represented a lot,” the actor says dryly. “You know, a wife begging someone to not blow something up.” Having grown up in London, Farzad “didn’t think of myself as necessarily needing to be cast as a Middle Eastern person – I was just a girl from London”, but it happened so often that it became a running joke among her friends – “look Leila, it’s your part”. That is, until a job came along that changed everything. Farzad landed the part of Naomi in Billie Piper and Lucy Prebble’s I Hate Suzie, as the straight-talking agent to child-star-turned-shamed-celeb Suzie Pickles.
The role landed her a Bafta nomination and proved, at 37, to be Farzad’s big break.

The end of the year is a time for self-reflection. Sometimes, if you’re looking for a TV show to watch as the calendar waits to flip over, the goal is to find something that reflects a little bit of yourself back at you. Wind down in the vicinity of a fireplace and let a show wrap you like a warm blanket.
For those who want to go the opposite route and lean into every last shred of anxiety, “I Hate Suzie” Season 2 is here just in time for your end-of-year celebration of choice. A show that began as a laser-focused fame dramedy released on HBO Max in the heart of 2020 (not exactly the most calming chapter in world history either) returns for a follow-up, with Billie Piper’s former child star Suzie Pickles back under the fictional microscope again.

Four years after first announcing that it had ordered the Greek mythology reimagining “Kaos” from “The End of the F***ing World” creator Charlie Covell, Netflix has finally set the show’s leading cast. Hugh Grant, Janet McTeer, Cliff Curtis, David Thewlis, Killian Scott, Misia Butler, Leila Farzad, Nabhaan Rizwan, Rakie Ayola and Stanley Townsend have signed on as series regulars alongside Aurora Perrineau in the upcoming series, Netflix confirmed to TheWrap.
The eight-episode contemporary take, which heads into production later this summer, is described by Netflix as a “genre-bending series” that puts a “modern twist on Greek and Roman mythology, exploring themes of gender politics, power and life in the underworld.”
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be making ‘Kaos,’ and I can’t think of a more exciting or dynamic team of people to bring everything to life. Georgi [Banks-Davies] and Runyararo [Mapfumo] are both visionary directors with pleasingly dark senses of...

The series is billed as a bold, darkly comic, contemporary take on Greek mythology, exploring love, power and life in the underworld. Nothing is sacred in Covell’s bold reinvention of Greek myths (think tracksuits not togas), except the treachery and arrogance of a bunch of inconstant gods and their cosmic machinations…Some things never change. Grant is set to portray the seemingly all-powerful, yet desperately insecure and vengeful Zeus, who has long enjoyed...
