I’m not sure if there’s a rulebook regarding how to watch a stand-up, but the first rule should always be: don’t go into it with any kind of presumption. When I read the description of the latest Neal Brennan comedy special on Netflix, titled Crazy Good, I didn’t expect it to be that hilarious. What I mean here is that I couldn’t imagine a stand-up that focuses on mental health, cryptocurrency, and the psychopathic tendencies of celebrities turning out to be “haha funny”—that too without being problematic. But Brennan has clearly managed to achieve that here. In Crazy Good, Brennan does get into everything that’s mentioned in the description provided by Netflix, and while he acknowledges the seriousness of so many of these matters, he also succeeds at getting some genuine laughter out of it. And it’s not an easy thing to do,...

In recent years, Netflix has not only successfully promoted stand-up comedy as a global form of entertainment, but it has also managed to help this very exciting form of art evolve. Comedy specials like Demetri Martin: Demetri Deconstructed are profound examples of that. In this Netflix special, we see comedian Demitri Martin sort of playing a character who happens to be a comedian. It is, of course, just a mildly exaggerated version of him, who takes us to a place where comedy sets usually don’t go—the psyche of the comedian. Have you ever wondered what goes on inside a comedian’s head when he’s just about to perform? Or when he is performing on the stage itself? Does he get anxious about not being able to deliver a joke? Well, in Demitri Deconstructed, we get to see it all, and I have got to say, Martin...

A car crash interview with a delusional prince, a new series adaptation featuring Patricia Highsmith’s most infamous creation, the second part of Zack Snyder’s pricey space opera and a paranormal detective show set within Neil Gaiman’s celebrated Sandman universe are among the big titles hitting Netflix in April.
Debuting April 4 is Ripley, Netflix’s glossy new take on Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Fresh from the critical acclaim he received for All of Us Strangers, Irish actor Andrew Scott will be inhabiting the role of Tom Ripley in an adaptation that will be screened in black-and-white. The eight-episode series also stars Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, and acting newcomer Eliot Sumner (son of Sting and Trudie Styler) as Freddie Miles. Written and directed by Oscar winner Steven Zaillian, Ripley was originally set for release on Showtime before it found a new home on Netflix.

Exclusive: After 5+ years without a special, comedian Demetri Martin is poised to return with two new ones for Netflix, Deadline has learned. The first, Demetri Deconstructed, premieres globally on the platform on April 2nd. Check out a trailer above.
No word yet on what Martin will speak to in the specials, but they’re the 7th and 8th of his career. Most recently debuting his hour The Overthinker on Netflix in 2018, Martin has also released specials with Comedy Central and BBC 3.
One of the most original comedic voices of his generation, known for bringing musical instruments as well as visual aids into his act, Martin began honing his craft on New York City’s vibrant stand-up circuit after graduating from Yale in 1995. Breaking out with his critically acclaimed one-man show, If I, which won the Perrier Award at the International Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland and was turned into a special for the BBC,...

"Weird: The Al Yankovic Story" is one of the funniest movies of 2022, and I will die on this hill. The fake totally accurate biopic stars Daniel Radcliffe of "Harry Potter" fame as the accordion-playing songster who brought us such classics as "Like a Surgeon," "Amish Paradise," and "Eat It," which are parodies of "Like a Virgin," "Gangster's Paradise," and "Beat It," in case you somehow didn't know.
The film tells the not-so very real tale of Al's life, from his father's disapproval of his wild accordion-playing days to his rock star bingeing to his toxic romantic relationship with Madonna (Evan Rachel Wood in the best casting choice of the year). Of course, none all of this is true, and it makes for a fun story.
One of the best scenes in the film is a pool party where a young Al meets pretty much every niche superstar who was famous in the 1970s and 1980s,...

A movie about movie trailers? Count us in. More specifically, director/writer Lake Bell’s 2013 farce is about the cutthroat world of movie trailer narrators. Potentially a thin premise, the talented Lake Bell, who also stars, spins some comedy gold with the help of a terrific cast of comedian/actors including Demetri Martin and Rob Corddry. The low budget film tripled its cost at the box office and won critical appraisal across the board.

Hannah Einbinder and Jana Schmieding landed plum roles in two of this year’s most buzzed-about comedy series: “Hacks” and “Rutherford Falls.” For each this marks a first foray into acting after years of toiling as a stand-up comic. And each is paired with a veteran performer in their acclaimed new shows. Einbinder spars with Emmy darling Jean Smart while Schmieding is stealing scenes from Ed Helms. Though their shows may be streaming on different services — HBO Max and Peacock respectively — they share the same executive producer: Michael Schur.
Einbinder plays Ava, a young comedy writer who, after a Twitter controversy, lands the only job she can find: writing for legendary stand-up comic Deborah Vance (Smart). There are two schools of thought when it comes to viewing Steven Soderbergh’s 2011 film Contagion here in the mess that is 2020. On the one hand, you have people who have flocked to the movie in recent days. On the other hand, you have those who think that’s an absolutely terrible idea, one that unnecessarily upsets you and causes extra anxiety in a time of crisis. Honestly, both are true, and that’s part of why it works so well. Directing a script by Scott Z. Burns, Soderbergh put forth a riveting depiction of a viral outbreak. Today, we’ll dive in and give it a new review, as seen with a modern lens. For those who don’t remember, the film is a drama about what a global pandemic could be like in the modern world. This was the official plot synopsis from Warner Bros. at the time:...

A writer working in the mediums of comedy and music, Mark Rivers has been able to bring both of these creative passions into play with the Netflix animated series, Big Mouth.
Created by by Nick Kroll, Jennifer Flackett, Andrew Goldberg and Mark Levin, the raunchy and heartfelt series centers on teenage friends who find their lives turned upside down by the good, the bad and the ugly of puberty—and as one might expect, Big Mouth has given Rivers the opportunity to craft songs you might not hear anywhere else. Receiving his first Emmy nomination in 2018 for the Queen-inspired tune “Totally Gay”—with Brendan McCreary providing the Ghost of Freddie Mercury’s pipes—Rivers has since gone on to write four songs for the series’ second season, and three for My Furry Valentine, a Valentine’s Day special released ahead of Season 3, with titles like “I Love My Body,” “Sex...

“The Hunger Games” director Gary Ross has closed a deal to rewrite the script for the Paramount Pictures and Gary Sanchez Productions dramedy “Will” with plans to direct the project once the script is done.
The previous draft was written by Demetri Martin with Adam McKay, Will Ferrell, and Kevin Messick producing for Gary Sanchez.
The film is a dramatic comedy that examines the tension between free will and destiny, and the occasional joy of being alive.
A production start date has not yet been set, as execs want Ross focused on the rewrite.
Ross is no stranger to the dramatic comedy genre, cutting his teeth in the ’80s and ’90s writing scripts to classic pics such as “Dave” and “Big,” both of which earned him Oscar nominations for best screenplay. Ross would eventually launch his directing career with the critically acclaimed “Pleasantville” and follow that up with the Oscar-nominated “Seabiscuit.

Ang Lee celebrates his 64th birthday on October 23, 2018. The Oscar-winning filmmaker has worked in a variety of genres and styles to explore the lives of people around the globe. In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in Taiwan in 1954, Lee’s interest in film brought him to NYU’s graduate program, where he worked as a crew member on classmate Spike Lee‘s thesis project, “Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads.” He directed his first feature, “Pushing Hands” (1991) at the age of 37.
Lee followed up his debut with back-to-back international successes, each one scoring Oscar nominations as Best Foreign Language Film: “The Wedding Banquet” (1993) and “Eat Drink Man Woman” (1994). In both films, the director explored the kinds of complex familial relationships that would animate many of his stories.

Paramount Sets First Look Deal With Adam McKay & Will Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez & Gloria Sanchez Labels
Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has set Gary Sanchez Productions and sister label Gloria Sanchez into a new three-year first look feature deal. Gary Sanchez Productions is led by principals Will Ferrell and Adam McKay with producer Jessica Elbaum heading Gloria Sanchez.
This comes as Paramount percolates the Demetri Martin scripted Will, and the English language remake of the German comedy Toni Erdmann, with Lisa Cholodenko to direct a vehicle for Kristen Wiig.
Ferrell and McKay once had a deal under the prior regime at Paramount but left the studio. Bringing them back is a coup for chairman Jim Gianopulos and Paramount Motion Picture Group president Wyck Godfrey. Gary Sanchez Productions films have grossed almost $1 billion worldwide for Paramount. That includes Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters ($226M), Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues ($173M), the Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg Daddy’s Home ($242M) and Daddy’s Home 2 ($180M) and The Big Short, the...

August signals the best and worst parts of summer — still plenty of time for beach days, but we’re reminded that the back-to-school frenzy is just around the corner.
We choose to procrastinate thinking about summer’s end as long as possible, and there are plenty of new titles dropping on Netflix to help us escape. Season 2 of the recently Emmy-nominated “Ozark” arrives on August 31, teaching us that the money laundering business knows no off-season.
Matt Groening’s new series “Disenchantment” will debut on Aug. 17. The show follows princess Bean, played by “Broad City” star Abbi Jacobson, her elf companion Elfo (Nat Faxon) and her own personal demon Luci (Eric Andre). Dropping that same day is the Ya movie “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.”

Throughout his career, Demetri Martin has singled himself out by thinking about all angles of life in a different way. His new Netflix special, out next month, finds him wondering if he might have always been overdoing it, just a little bit.
Martin returns to the stage in “Demetri Martin: The Overthinker,” a new hour of musings on everything from his own childhood precociousness to getting angry while driving. As Netflix’s trailer for at the special below shows, the guy behind “The Overthinker” has plenty of fresh ideas for getting people to tune in.

Ching-chong-ching-chong.” He then asked the comedian whether or not she would fight karate with him.
