Happy Easter! Happy Trans Day of Visibility!! Happy 25th anniversary to The Matrix!!! As luck would have it, these three occasions coincided this year, making for a lovely little cinematic celebration. After all, The Matrix is probably the most famous work by trans filmmakers – the Wachowski sisters – and Neo's journey can be seen as an allegory of gender identity. It was somewhat devised as such by its closeted auteurs who've reclaimed their work's intrinsic queerness after it became a powerful reference for the Mra movement and the alt-right. Like many misappropriated movies, The Matrix doesn't deserve its fans. Or, perhaps more accurately, a good portion of its fandom doesn't deserve The Matrix in all its glory.
But Neo isn't just a queer icon. He's also something of a Jesus figure, a Messiah for our cyber-noir future, bedecked in fetish fashions, armed with kung fu moves and impossible firepower.

At the beginning of David Lynch's 1984 adaptation of "Dune," Princess Irulan (Virginia Madsen) narrates directly to the camera, laying out the mythology of Frank Herbert's psychedelic universe as concisely as she can. She talks about the Pashisah Emperor Shaddam IV, the valuable spice Melange, the planet Arrakis, the Fremen, and the foretold coming of a Messiah. "A beginning," she says, "is a very delicate time." Her sentiment is reflected by the filmmakers, who have their work cut out for them visualizing everything Irulan talks about.
In Denis Villeneueve's 2024 adaptation of the same text -- "Dune: Part Two" -- Princess Irulan is played by Florence Pugh, and she, too, finds a beginning to be a very delicate time. One of the first times audiences see Irulan in Villeneueve's version, she is likewise dictating the events of the film, this time into a strange cylindrical dictaphone. Villeneuve's version of "Dune" eschews the story's magical,...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: A Very Sapphic Second Coming
Given the choice to watch Jesus fight a pack of lesbian vampires or an honest-to-God homophobe, I will almost always choose the lesbian vampires. It’s not that I wouldn’t like to see an intolerant bigot get roundhouse-kicked by the Prince of Peace; in fact, that image is particularly tempting ahead of Easter weekend during an election year.
But as an ex-Catholic school girl born of the “Twilight” generation, my unquenchable thirst for horny vampires supersedes my taste for virtue signaling most of the time.

It’s not every day that a filmmaker will rise up during an interview and recite Old Testament tales and sing out their favorite hymn. Well, hallelujah, brother Jeymes Samuel for spreading the gospel’s good news.
The director’s spectacular Jesus in the hood movie, The Book of Clarence, starring a mighty fine Lakeith Stanfield playing a charlatan wannabe Messiah, shakes up the toga and peepy toe genre.
Samuel’s movie has its world premiere Wednesday at the BFI London Film Festival. The Legendary Pictures production is released through Tristar with congregations taking their pews from January 12, 2024.
The movie’s thrilling prologue kicks off with a rip-roaring, wheel-screeching chariot race with Mary Magdalene thrashing the lads.
The moment was of course inspired by the iconic chariot scene between Charlton Heston’s Judah Ben-Hur and Stephen Boyd’s Messala in William Wyler...

In 1985, Steven Spielberg brought Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Color Purple, to the big screen and racked up Academy Award nominations for himself, for the film’s stars, Oprah Winfrey, Whoopi Goldberg and Margaret Avery, and the film’s composer, Quincy Jones. Warner Bros. now re-adapts the story based on the musical version from director Blitz Bazawule, a multi-medium artist whose breakout first feature is the highly acclaimed The Burial of Kojo.
The official synopsis from Warner Bros. reads,
“A story of love and resilience, The Color Purple is a decades-spanning tale of one woman’s journey to independence. Celie faces many hardships in her life, but ultimately finds extraordinary strength and hope in the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood.”
This new incarnation of the classic story features an ensemble cast that includes Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), SAG Award winner and Tony Award nominee Danielle Brooks,...

“I wanted to tell a story about the environment that I grew up in but based in the biblical era and merge the two,” Jeymes Samuel told Deadline’s Baz Bamigboye of the idea behind his latest pic, The Book of Clarence, at London Contenders.
Starring Lakeith Stanfield, David Oyelowo, and Benedict Cumberbatch, The Book of Clarence tells the story of Stanfield’s streetwise but down-on-his-luck Clarence, who is struggling to find a better life for his family while fighting to free himself of debt. Captivated by the power and glory of the rising Messiah and His apostles, he risks everything to carve his path to divine life and ultimately discovers that the redemptive power of belief may be his only way out.
The film’s cast is rounded out by Omar Sy, Rj Cyler, James McAvoy, Anna Diop, Teyana Taylor, Alfre Woodard, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Caleb McLaughlin, Babs Olusanmokun, Eric Kofi-Abrefa,...

HBO Max is dead. Long live Max.
The new combined streaming service launched on Tuesday, and in addition to housing all of HBO Max and Discovery+’s content in one place, Max also plays host to a robust library of movies and TV shows streaming in 4K Uhd. At launch, more than 1,000 hours of programming are available in 4K, and Max says more will be added in the coming months.
Right now, you can stream all the “Harry Potter” movies, the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” trilogies, the “Dark Knight” trilogy, the “Matrix” films, “Dune,” “Joker” and even “The Wizard of Oz” and “Goodfellas” in 4K. Additionally, acclaimed (and cinematic) HBO series like “House of the Dragon,” “Barry” and “Succession” are also streaming in 4K, with additional shows (and seasons) to come.

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 18 (Ians) While entire Kerala is gripped with the football fever at Qatar, it has reached a crescendo in Malappuram district and other Northern parts of the state.
Malappuram and other northern districts of Kerala like Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasargod and Wayanad have several fan clubs that support Argentina and France.
Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe are household names in even the remotest areas of northern Kerala and fans are prepared for the victory of their respective teams. While France doesn’t have much of a fan base in this part of the world, the die-hard fans of Brazil and Portugal have thrown their weight behind, France.
Alavikutty, (47), a local footballer and a hardcore fan of Brazil who lives in Kondotty, Malappuram while speaking to Ians said, “Brazil is the team, it was hard luck for our team to lose out to Croatia even after a dream goal from Neymar Junior.

It took something like 15 years for Jeymes Samuel to fully bring his filmmaking powers to bear in "The Harder They Fall." The musician-turned-filmmaker has been pretty outspoken about his journey to get his passion project made, and all the hurdles he faced in reclaiming the western. It's not every day that a film like this gets off the ground in such a major way — but Samuel isn't going to let another 15 years pass before realizing another cinematic dream.
While the buzzy western already has us on the look-out for a sequel, Samuel's actually hard at work on a very different project. "To me, 'The Harder They Fall' is like my 'Reservoir Dogs,' my 'She's Gotta Have It,'" Samuel recently told Deadline. Both films were the debut features for Quentin Tarantino and Spike Lee, respectively. Their follow-ups came in quick succession — and it seems like Samuel's next film,...

Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy, David Oyelowo, Alfre Woodard & more join ‘Book of Clarence’ cast
Benedict Cumberbatch and James McAvoy have joined the cast on the, now in production, movie ‘Book of Clarence’ from Jeymes Samuel.
Rj Cyler, ‘Titans’ TV star Anna Diop, David Oyelowo, Alfre Woodard and Marianne Jean-Baptiste have also joined Lakeith Stanfield and Omar Sy on the cast list.
The picture is inspired by classic Hollywood epics set in Biblical times and tells the tale of Clarence, a down-on-his-luck denizen of Jerusalem embarking on a misguided attempt to capitalize on the rise of celebrity and influence of the Messiah for his own personal gain. It is a journey that leads him on an exploration of the idea of faith and to a highly unexpected path of his own. Stanfield is playing Clarence.

A brand new poster is here for M. Night Shyamalan’s new movie Knock At The Cabin.
While vacationing at a remote cabin, a young girl and her parents are taken hostage by four armed strangers who demand that the family make an unthinkable choice to avert the apocalypse. With limited access to the outside world, the family must decide what they believe before all is lost.
Could they be the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse? Death, Famine, War, and Conquest? Each figure on the poster are holding a different “weapon.” In the Book of Revelation, these Four Horsemen represent a vision of harbingers of the Last Judgment, setting a divine end-time upon the world. This wouldn’t be the Oscar winning director first film on faith with religious overtones. AMC is rounding out its series regular cast for Demascus. Janet Hubert, Caleb Eberhardt and Shakira Ja’nai Paye have been cast opposite Okieriete Onaodowan in the half-hour comedic sci-fi series from playwright Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm and AMC Studios. The six-episode series is set to premiere next year on AMC and AMC+.
Created by Chisholm, Demascus follows Demascus (Onaodowan), a 33-year-old Black man who goes on a journey of self-discovery using an innovative new technology that allows him to experience different versions of his own life. The series is a comedic, genre-fluid, coming-of-age story with a reality-bending premise that explores the gulf between Black male perspectives, while also attempting to answer Demascus’ personal question: “Who am I?”
