Actor-turned-director story numero uno of the day: Though Renee Zellweger has occasionally dipped her toes into the producing waters, she hasn’t shown much interest in directing. But apparently she was just keeping it quiet, as the actress has now signed on to star in and shoot 4 1/2 Minutes. While lots of people get their first taste of megaphone wielding via shorts, that is actually the title of a new comedy and not the running time. Written by Warrior’s Anthony Tambakis, the plot will be based on the life of real-life stand-up comic Dov Davidoff (who worked on the story).Johnny Knoxville will star as Jimmy Bennett, a commitment-shy comedian whose life is one big disaster area. That, presumably, changes when he takes a job looking after the genius child spawned by single mother Pj Anderson (Zellweger).Assuming everything comes together, Zellweger will be calling action for the first time in New York next February.

It seems that Renee Zellweger isn’t just sitting around waiting for another Bridget Jones to head into production, as we’ve got news she will be stepping behind the camera herself. Variety has the report on her directorial debut, which features quite an odd match-up.
Jackass star Johnny Knoxville is set to star alongside Zellweger in her indie comedy titled 4 1/2 Minutes. Anthony Tambakis, who wrote Warrior and also worked with Zellweger on an upcoming Lifetime pilot, has scripted this one, which is based on stand-up comedian Dov Davidoff‘s life. Knoxville leads the film as Jimmy Bennett, “a commitment-phobic, train-wreck of a comedian whose life is falling apart when he takes a job looking after the genius son of single mom P.J. Andersen,” played by Zellweger.
After the success of Louie and Sleepwalk Walk with Me, I’m enjoying this string of slightly biographical takes on the lives...

Renee Zellweger has signed on to both direct and star in 4 1/2 Minutes , a comedy based on the stand-up of Dov Davidoff. Variety reports that Johnny Knoxville is also attached to play Jimmy Bennett, Davidoff's on-screen alter ego. Anthony Tambakis provided the screenplay for the project, which sees Bennett taking a job babysitting a child genius with Zellweger playing the boy's single mother. 4 1/2 Minutes marks Zellweger's directing debut and is targeting a February 2013 production in New York City. I don't think I've mentioned that this is the last season of "Rescue Me" yet so I'm going to now, because it gives me something to talk about tonight that's actually sort of interesting. Now in it's seventh season, the show has been variously praised for its portrayal of Ptsd and alcoholism in Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary) and derided for romanticizing a man who is a consummate asshole. I'm more of the opinion that it's a combination of both. I mean, those two characterizations aren't really at odds with each other. Damaged people aren't always saints and assholes can have terrible things happen to them and genuine problems to deal with. Doesn't make them the most sympathetic of characters, but sometimes it can make for more interesting stories and interactions. Also, it's one of those rare shows that really got to plan out their ending, since the announcement that this...

Happy Towel Day! I hope all of you have been spending your day in appreciation of the genius of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Discussion question for the evening: has the emergence of tablet PCs and the iPad give us actual Hitchhiker's Guides? Hell, even smart phones at this point have given us the ability to access a wealth of information and directions from virtually anywhere. Well, anywhere with cell service so depending on which carrier you're with... whenever you're near a major city or suburban area if you're lucky. The bottom line is that I really want a cover for my cell phone that says "Don't Panic" on it in large, friendly looking letters. Here's your Wednesday night TV:
8:00pm: "American Idol" on Fox. 127 minute 10th season finale. Because a two hour long season finale just wasn't enough, those extra seven minutes are life or death Crucial...

Up until today I have not seen the video of the song "Friday" featuring Rebecca Black. Mostly because when it came out I was at SXSW and just didn't have time and after seeing everyone's reactions to it decided it was best to stay away. Very similar to my approach to "Two Girls One Cup." (Mom, Do Not Google That! Call me if you really want to know.) (Sorry, my parents read my column.) However, it was announced last night on "The Colbert Report" that Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon had raised $26,000 for Donors Choose and so Colbert would be performing Patrice Wilson's (the actual writer of the song, rather than the hapless teenager unfortunate enough to have sung it) "Friday" with The Roots on... Friday. Obviously. So I may have to watch the video just to get the full effect. Oh, and I also saw this video of Amanda Palmer...

It's officially a month into 2011 now, so all of us can take a step back and see where we're standing on all those wonderful New Year's resolutions that seemed so noble and important four weeks ago. Well, not me. I didn't make any New Year's resolutions because when you manage to sprain an ankle and break a finger on New Year's Eve, I think that counts as a massive goddamn hint about what the universe has to say about your near future. In my case, what it was mostly saying was that I'd spend the first several weeks of 2011 alternately frustrated and in pain, with a high chance of having a finger that will be stuck at an angle best described as "jaunty." You should all be so lucky. So let's hear how the resolutions are or aren't coming along and in the meantime here's your Monday night TV:

For someone whose sort of job it is to be aware of all the new TV that's on each weeknight, it's really a little embarrassing how frequently I just put on some reruns while doing other things around my apartment. This means that I barely pay attention to TV anymore unless it's something I really want to watch, it's sort of like a flickering box of lights that makes my apartment feel not so boring for a little while at a time. Is that weird? Actually, don't tell me, I really don't care. Here's your Monday night TV:
8:00pm: "Antiques Roadshow" on PBS
"The Bachelor" on ABC
"Enough Already with Peter Walsh" on Own. Okay, so use an anonymous name if you must, but can someone tell me if they're actually watching anything on Own? Because if I don't have to list this shit I won't. I figured for...

As I sit here with my cup of tea and sort through the interwebs to start my day, I notice that it's apparently snowing in large sections of the country today. Yeah, it's all pretty and novel now, but in a few weeks when it's all grey slush on the side of the road that freezes overnight to try and make you slip (yes, snow has evil intentions, just trust me here) you won't be so chipper about it. Me? I'm just annoyed that it's a bit too chilly to wear flip flops in North Cuba today. Here's your Monday night TV:
8:00pm: "90210" on The CW
"American Country Awards" on Fox. Wait, didn't the Cmt awards air a couple weeks ago on ABC? How many Country music oriented awards shows are there?
"How I Met Your Mother" on CBS
"Little People, Big World" on Tlc
"The Sing-Off" on NBC.

Brittany Murphy begins filming the indie feature Across the Hall Wednesday and also is eyeing a role in the dark comedy Poor Things. She would replace Lindsay Lohan, who has dropped out of the cast of the latter film.
In Hall, Murphy is starring opposite Mike Vogel (Cloverfield) and Danny Pino (The Burning Plain) in a thriller about a brutal standoff between a young man (Vogel), his fiancee and his best friend (Pino).
The cast also includes Dov Davidoff (Invincible), Brad Greenquist (Shiloh Falls) and Guillermo Diaz (Weeds).
Insomnia Media Group is producing the film, directed by Alex Merkin from a screenplay by Jesse Mittelstadt and Julien Schwab. Hall is based on Merkin's award-winning 2005 short film that starred Adrian Grenier (Entourage). WMA is repping the film domestically, while Voltage handles international sales.
Bret Saxon and Jeff Bowler are among the producers.
Meanwhile, Murphy is under consideration as a replacement for Lohan in Poor, though negotiations have not yet begun.
Scott Marshall has come aboard to direct the film, replacing original director Ash Baron-Cohen, who departed over what was described as "creative differences."
Lohan fell out of the project in May when she admitted herself to a rehabilitation facility.

In this age, sports, not religion, is the arena for miracles. Think of Pete Gray, the one-armed outfielder for the 1945 St. Louis Browns. Or Dick Nen, whose only major-league hit in 1963 was a monster home run that helped propel the Los Angeles Dodgers into the World Series.
Producers Mark Ciardi, an ex-big leaguer, and Gordon Gray have turned such sports miracles into a motion picture cottage industry: First came "The Rookie", about a high school baseball coach who tried out for the expansion Tampa Bay Devil Rays and wound up in the big leagues three months later, and then "Miracle", about the coach who inspired the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team's improbable victory. Now the two team with Ken Mok for "Invincible", the reasonably true story of Vince Papale, a South Philly bartender who never played college football yet tried out for his hometown Philadelphia Eagles and wound up playing wide receiver and special teams from 1976-78.
"Invincible" is a neatly packaged Walt Disney Co. picture with bone-crunching football action; a nice sense of the blue-collar, male-dominated milieu that nourishes football fanaticism; and a few too many tugs at the heartstrings. Opening on the cusp of the football season, the film will attract a male following of all age groups, so it should do moderate theatrical and video business in North America.
Mark Wahlberg plays Vince, which is a bit of a stretch physically because if you were choosing sides for tag football, he probably would not be your first choice. However, Wahlberg does get the heart-and-guts "Rocky" side of the equation.
Things are going so badly for Vince as the movie opens that in one scene, when he slouches home from the bar, the soundtrack breaks into that classic melancholy song, "One for My Baby". He has lost a job as a substitute teacher, his wife had fled with every possession, and he's broke. So why not try out for the Eagles, coming off a hideous season, and its new coach, just hired out of UCLA, Dick Vermeil (Greg Kinnear)?
Vince turns out to be a legitimate rookie, a guy whose spirit and determination make him nearly as good as the overpaid and underperforming pros. They hate him, of course, but his edge is that he still knows what it means to be hungry. Also brightening his life is a terrific-looking fellow bartender, Janet (Elizabeth Banks), whose only "character flaw" is that she is a New York Giants fan.
Writer Brad Gann and cinematographer-turned-director Ericson Core root the movie firmly in a South Philly neighborhood where jobs are scarce and strikes are under way. Initially Vince's dad Frank (Kevin Conway) isn't sure his boy should try out. Nevertheless, Frank's devotion to the Eagles is what got him through his wife's illness and early death.
The guys Vince plays sandlot football with have mixed reactions to their pal's success. Bar owner Max (Michael Rispoli), Tommy Kirk Acevedo) and Pete Michael Kelly) live vicariously through his exploits. But Johnny (Dov Davidoff) is jealous and worries about losing his pal to the bright lights, so he sulks in a corner of the bar.
The most accomplished thing about this movie is that even if Vince had been cut before the season began, there will still be a decent story here because the characters and their environment are so strongly established. Wahlberg plays the sensitive side to Vince without compromising any machismo. Banks seems to be having genuine fun as a football-addicted female hanging out in an all-male world.
The acting is solid throughout, with Michael Nouri as the club owner and, frankly, Kinnear the only weak spots. OK, so the college coach is an NFL rookie too, but Kinnear gives Vermeil too much vulnerability.
Core, acting as his own cinematographer, shoots the hard-nosed football action close to the trenches to catch all the painful hits. Costumes, sets and decor strongly evoke the '70s along with music coming from radios, while Mark Isham's score gets excited at all the right moments.
