Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What’s the best opening title sequence for a show premiering in 2017? (And yes, this is an update of the earlier midseason survey.)
Tim Surette (@timsurette), TV.com
I’ll go with “Mindhunter.” There’s a cool juxtaposition of recording equipment used by weirdo FBI profiler Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and the corpse of a murdered woman, which just goes to show that Ford kind of looks at both as objects for his own research, instead of, you know, an ex-person who still has actual importance to people. It’s an effective way to get right into his somewhat sociopathic head and is a real treat for people who love pareidolia.

Alison Ferrell had a very special “something blue” at her wedding on May 13 — her 92-year-old uncle!
Bill Lee Eblen, a WWII and Korean War veteran, came down the aisle of his beloved niece’s nuptials to attorney Matthew Ferrell at Old St. Vincent’s Church in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, carrying a sign that read, “I’m her something blue.”
Eblen, who lives at a nearby veterans home in Anna, Illinois, wore his Marine Corps uniform, complete with blue pants, as he was wheeled down the aisle in a wheelchair.

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes and clips and puts it all in perspective. I remember when my dad took me to one of my first games at Fenway (I grew up in Boston, and I promise I won't go on about it like your other Boston friends), Oil Can Boyd was pitching, and my dad said "You'll like this guy! He's crazy!" Which was true. Oil Can danced on the mound. He was nuts. Oil Can was my hero for a long time. Oil Can's eccentric predecessor, Bill Lee, was a little before my time but he would often provide color commentary for baseball news shows, and so I'd watch him say completely out there stuff, and I wished I had grown up on him, too. Athletes are not typically known for being eccentric, but baseball pitchers are the weirdos of sport,...

"I ain't ready to write my memoirs yet, I am ?" Filmbuff has unveiled the new full-length trailer for stoner baseball drama Spaceman, about the true story of baseball player Bill "Spaceman" Lee, who was a big-time advocate of marijuana. A very nicely-bearded Josh Duhamel plays Bill Lee, and the cast includes Ernie Hudson, W. Earl Brown, Sterling K. Brown, Carlos Leal, Peter Mackenzie and Emma Rose Maloney. The first teaser trailer for Spaceman didn't show too much, but this trailer gives us much more to work with, and it seems like an amusing and entertaining tale of stoner-dom. Lee actually pitched in the two games during the 1975 World Series for the Red Sox. This seems like a perfect movie for a Sunday afternoon. Here's the new full-length trailer (+ poster) for Brett Rapkin's Spaceman, direct from Filmbuff's YouTube: From the executive producer of Bull Durham and White Men Can't Jump comes the film Spaceman,...

The independent film distribution company Alchemy, formerly Millennium, is planning to file for bankruptcy as early as this Friday, TheWrap has learned. Alchemy, whose acquisitions include the current art-house release “The Lobster” starring Colin Farrell, has debts in the tens of millions of dollars, according to a source with knowledge of the company’s condition. The company went through a dramatic management change last December when chief Bill Lee stepped down and industry veterans Kelly Summers and Scott Guthrie became co-presidents. Horror is a genre of ideas, of what ifs turned into terrifying flesh-and-blood monsters. In the 1980s, David Cronenberg emerged as a renouned horror director for his willingness to explore dark avenues of thought, rather than burying them beneath layers of screaming teenagers and half-baked plots. Despite his genre of choice, too often considered a low-minded form of entertainment, Cronenberg’s films were always somehow literate. It seems only natural that he would eventually adapt a novel, and it seems almost perfect that the novel would be William S. Burroughs’s Naked Lunch.
In many ways, Cronenberg and Burroughs are a perfect pairing. No matter how many times I watch Videodrome, I doubt I’ll ever understand every piece of the puzzle, and the same goes with much of Burroughs’s work, including his magnum opus novel Naked Lunch. You don’t think about Cronenberg’s and Burroughs’s art...

The film has been adapted from the best-selling memoir by ex-pitcher Bill 'Spaceman' Lee, according to Deadline.
Set in the 1980s, the film chronicles the downward spiral of Major League pitcher Bill Lee, played by Duhamel.
Hudson will portray Joe, the only black player and first baseman for an all-white, French Canadian amateur club.
It is the second time the actors have worked together after co-starring opposite Hilary Swank and Loretta Devine in last year's You're Not You.
Brett Rankin penned the script and will also direct the project, which will begin shooting next week.
Duhamel can next be seen in CBS drama Battle Creek, which premieres in the Us tomorrow evening (March 1).

These days, it’s all about the Disney princesses, but Perdita is merely a dog without high pedigree. As a result, she and her mate Pongo, are often overlooked. They’re certainly overshadowed by their antagonist, the Dalmatian loving Cruella De Vil, about the chew every scene in Once Upon a Time. Thank goodness, then, that Walt Disney reminds us about the utter charm contained within their 1961 release 101 Dalmatians. Out Tuesday in a handsome Diamond Combo Pack, their 17th film holds up remarkably well.

The crime thriller is the first acquisition to be announced by the company formerly known as Millennium Entertainment.
Anthony Hopkins stars in Kidnapping Mr. Heineken, which will open theatrically and on VOD on March 6 and is expected to be the first of several deals with producers Informant Media.

Chicago – I adore David Cronenberg. He’s one of the most important filmmakers of his generation from “Videodrome” (also available in a great Criterion release) to “The Fly” to “Dead Ringers” to “The History of Violence.” He matters. And yet I’ve never been in love with “Naked Lunch,” recently released in Criterion Blu-ray and DVD. It’s one of those movies that I always admired but never loved. It’s about all that could be done with a Burroughs’ book, one that clearly could not be directly adapted into film, but I find it more interesting as a filmmaking exercise than an enjoyable piece of work on its own. Having said that, the Criterion treatment of it is expectedly stellar.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Criterion HD transfers should be the model for all. “Naked Lunch” doesn’t look overly polished like too many movies from before 2000 often do. It just looks right.

John Dies at the End (2012) Magnolia Home Entertainment Blu-ray and DVD Available Now
Finally, a new Don Coscarelli movie! After years of waiting, the cult auteur comes back with a lively adaptation of David Wong’s popular novel. A drug that induces an out-of-body experience sends its users across time and other dimensions. When some of them come back not quite human, an otherworldly invasion is set into motion. Suddenly, college dropouts John (Rob Mayes) and Dave (Chase Williamson) find themselves in an epic battle to save the world. Coscarelli’s surreal visual flair and black comic bent are in full effect here. Hopefully, its critical success will ensure that the beloved filmmaker won't have to wait another ten years to make a film.
Special Features:
· Feature-length audio commentary by Coscarelli, Williamson, Mayes and producer Brad Baruh

When Gabriel Iglesias: Aloha Fluffy, whatever that is, is the top-selling new release at Amazon out of all the new releases this week you know it's not exactly a stellar line-up. That said, here's the small crop of titles the week has to offer. Naked Lunch (Criterion Collection) Blu-ray I have actually never seen David Cronenberg's Naked Lunch so I can't tell you anymore than the following synopsis: In this adaptation of William S. Burroughs's hallucinatory, once-thought-unfilmable novel Naked Lunch, directed by David Cronenberg, a part-time exterminator and full-time drug addict named Bill Lee (Peter Weller) plunges into the nightmarish Interzone, a netherworld of sinister cabals and giant talking bugs. Alternately humorous and grotesque--and always surreal-the film mingles aspects of Burroughs's novel with incidents from the writer's own life, resulting in an evocative paranoid fantasy and a self-reflexive investigation into the mysteries of the creative process. This has...

Actor who starred as the troubled pupil in Tea and Sympathy on stage and screen
The actor John Kerr, who has died aged 81, won a Tony award in his first starring role on the Broadway stage, as Tom in Tea and Sympathy in 1953, and subsequently appeared in the 1956 film version directed by Vincente Minnelli. Robert Anderson's play, in which a schoolboy "confesses" to his housemaster's wife that he might be homosexual – only to be seduced out of the notion by the sympathetic listener – was considered so controversial that it was restricted to a "members only" theatrical run in London, and Minnelli's film received an X certificate, despite modification, notably in the suggestion that the housemaster was gay.

Jeffrey Hayden's The Vintage (1957), starring Kerr and Mel Ferrer absurdly cast as Italian brothers, also failed to generate much box-office or critical interest. Peter Weller (Firstborn), Judy Davis (To Rome with Love) and Roy Scheider (Jaws) star in David Cronenberg’s (Cosmopolis) 1991 film adaptation of William S. Burroughs’s hallucinatory, once-thought unfilmable 1959 novel Naked Lunch.
Weller takes the lead in the biographical drama-comedy as a part-time exterminator and full-time drug addict named Bill Lee who plunges into the nightmarish Interzone, a netherworld of sinister cabals and giant talking bugs.
Alternately humorous and grotesque—and always surreal—the film mingles aspects of Burroughs’s novel with incidents from the writer’s own life, resulting in an paranoid fantasy and a self-reflexive investigation into the mysteries of the creative process.
The Blu-ray contains the same bonus features that were offered on the Criterion DVD that was issued back in 2003 (and that’s still available). Here’s what’s included:

Exclusive: Going into tonight’s Midnight Madness premiere of the Rob Zombie-directed The Lords Of Salem, there are three pre-emptive bids on the table. I’m hearing Anchor Bay is in the lead for the genre pic, but that Image and Bill Lee’s Millennium are also in the running. No deal will be made until after tonight’s screening, so a lot of distributors will be staying up late here in Toronto. The pic, scripted by Zombie, combines his backgrounds in music and fright fare. A Salem hard-rock radio DJ’s playing of a sinister heavy metal tune awakens a coven of nasty 17th century witches. The film stars Bruce Davison, Sheri Moon Zombie, and Dee Wallace and was produced by Zombie, Jason Blum, Oren Peli, Steven Schneider and Andy Gould. Im Global shopped the project here at the Toronto Film Festival. Zombie, of course, previously directed two...

There are a couple of updates to report today in the ongoing case involving the shooting death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin. First, Richard Myers is stepping in to replace Bill Lee as the Police Chief of Sanford, Florida -- the town where Martin was killed in February following an alleged altercation with volunteer neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman. And, secondly, the Orlando Sentinel is reporting that Zimmerman is claiming Martin had circled his SUV the night of the shooting, making him afraid for his own life.

Bill Lee, the Sanford, Florida police chief criticized for not arresting a neighborhood watch volunteer after the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, has temporarily stepped down, MSNBC is reporting. Lee and his department received criticism for not apprehending volunteer George Zimmerman after the February 26 incident, after which Martin died. Following the Sanford City Commission voting 3-2 that it didn’t have confidence in how Lee handled the case, Police Capt. Scott O’Connor has stepped up to run the department until an interim chief is appointed. Commissioners Patty Mahany and Randy Jones are supporting Lee, who took the job of police chief last May. From the electronic music, the editing, to the neon font reminiscent of Enter the Void, combined with the startling imagery, this new trailer for David Cronenberg‘s Cosmopolis is simply incredible. For those who have been missing the more extreme side of Cronenberg following last year’s tame A Dangerous Method, you most likely will be pleasantly surprised with this footage. By all accounts this can easily be described as a red-band trailer. On display is a whirlwind of nudity, blood, and violence. So you may want to avoid watching this at work.
There’s a line in the trailer that seems to recall a theme that has played a part in some of Cronenberg’s previous films, like Videodrome, Naked Lunch, eXistenz, and Crash.
“I’m looking for more . . . Show me something I don’t know”

Written and directed by Rodrigo Cortés, the man who impressively trapped Ryan Reynolds in a box in Buried for the entirety of the ninety-minute film, we got our first look at Robert De Niro in the film back in April last year, followed by an intriguing and mysterious teaser trailer and poster in September.
Following the film’s debut at Sundance, and ahead of its release in Spain in March, we’ve now got a great new Spanish trailer and poster to share with you, courtesy of Antena 3, via The Playlist, and Imp Awards, respectively.
De Niro is supported by an impressive cast that includes Sigourney Weaver, Cillian Murphy, and the ever-rising Elizabeth Olsen, and the plot looks a little like this:

Jordan hated Stephen Frears‘ Lay the Favorite like it broke into his apartment and ate all the food, but at least he’ll soon have good reason to warn more people about it: Variety reports that The Weinstein Company are attempting to pick up the film. But, unlike almost every other acquisition story we’ve been bringing you during the week, this one isn’t a sure thing. For one, a previous attempt at getting a deal through fell apart; on top of that, “multiple issues” (whatever that means) lie in the way of things becoming official. But talks are ongoing, and producers are keen on TWC’s ability to give the wide release they expected for a film with a fairly prolific cast.

Few things are more important when it comes to building expectations for a movie than the title itself. While every aspect of a production – from the actors, to the director, or even a costume designer – can pique our particular interest in an upcoming movie, often it’s the title which will first form part of our decision over whether or not a film appeals to us.
Most of us realise that film titles don’t have to be as gratuitously up front as say Snakes On A Plane or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but it’s still often a surprise when something with such a seemingly literal title can often give us the completely wrong idea. When we walk into a video store with the urge to watch something new, it’s the title – or cover art – which will form our initial idea of what the film could be like.
