Ever since Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford teased that the studio was working on “the big one” back in 2021, fans have been eagerly anticipating the next installment in the beloved Borderlands series. While the game hasn’t been officially announced yet, we have enough evidence to confirm that Borderlands 4 is indeed in active development.

While the game hasn’t been officially announced yet, this proves that Borderlands 4 is indeed in active development.

The Borderlands franchise is overwhelmingly successful and has racked up major sales since its inception. The franchise began with the release of the first game, Borderlands, in 2009. The concept for the game was developed by Gearbox Software, an independent video game developer based in Texas, USA. Randy Pitchford, Brian Martel, Stephen Bahl, Landon Montgomery, and Rob Heironimus came together to establish the company in 1999. Gearbox had previously worked on lauded titles like the Brothers in Arms series and the Half-Life expansion packs. Through these projects, Gearbox earned its place as a reputable developer in the gaming industry. The

Fill the cannons with stuffed animals and watch the fluff fly as Eli Roth’s Borderlands takes the Lionsgate stage at CinemaCon! The annual entertainment event is in full swing after yesterday’s Warner Bros. panel and reveal of Todd Phillips’s Joker: Folie à Deux trailer. We recently got the opportunity to talk to Cliff Bleszinski ahead of his appearance in the upcoming Shark Tank-inspired Wolves Den, and it was quite an illuminating chat, if a little short!
From his thoughts on Phil Spencer’s Xbox Game Pass/Game aims, his hopes for the show, what he wants to see, and who he thinks is the Sharon Osborne of the judges, to his simple request for the ending of Gears of War franchise, he didn’t hold anything back!
Wolves Den is the Gaming Shark Tank
If you’re wondering what Wolves Den is, the best explanation would be a gaming-centric Shark Tank (Dragon’s Den for you European folk), where contestants submit their ideas for games, and then throughout the rounds develop and refine them with the help and guidance of industry specialists like Cliff, all hosted and shown on the Spatial.io platform.

Gearbox Entertainment was acquired by the Swedish game company Embracer Group in 2021. Recently, rumors were that it was planning to sell Gearbox as part of the restructuring plan that has seen the company cut nearly 1400 jobs and shut down studios such as Saints Row developer Volition and Square Enix Montreal, just to name a few.
It was reported yesterday that the company is divesting Gearbox to 2K Games and GTA developer Rockstar Games’ parent company Take-Two Interactive. The companies have now confirmed this and revealed that Take-Two has acquired the company for $460 million and will own almost all the franchises from the renowned developer, as well as other new projects.

Video game publisher Take-Two Interactive Software has acquired Gearbox Entertainment, the company behind the Borderlands franchise, for $460 million in an all-stock deal with Embracer, the latest big deal in the video game business.
The deal comes as Lionsgate is releasing Eli Roth’s theatrical adaptation of Borderlands in August.
Take-Two said it expects the transaction “to deepen its successful relationship with Gearbox Entertainment and to provide increased financial benefits through a fully-integrated operational structure.” Gearbox’s extensive IP portfolio includes full ownership of the popular Borderlands and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands franchises, as well as Homeworld, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms, Duke Nukem. Gearbox currently has six interactive entertainment projects in various stages of development, including five sequels, two of which are from the Borderlands and Homeworld franchises, and at least one new property.

The embattled Embracer Group has sold Borderlands studio Gearbox to Take-Two Interactive for $460m, it’s been announced.
Swedish holding company Embracer Group, in the grip of what might be the biggest case of buyer’s remorse in the industry’s history, has announced that it’s sold Gearbox Entertainment to publisher Take-Two Interactive. The sale price was $460m according to a press release put out by Embracer (and reported by IGN).
There have been reports that Embracer was thinking about selling Gearbox – the studio behind, among other things, the hit Borderlands shooter series – for quite a while now, but the above press release is the first official confirmation to emerge.
The sale means that Take-Two, itself a vast company that has Rockstar Games, 2K and Zynga among its subsidiaries, now owns the rights to Borderlands, Duke Nukem, Homeworld and more besides; Embracer will, however, retain the rights to certain other properties and studios,...

Gearbox Software, the studio responsible for the Borderlands franchise could be one of the few gaming studios to make the headlines in the following days after Embracer Group sells along with Saber Interactive, the studio behind the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. The Embracer Group is a video game holding company that originated in Sweden and went on a spending spree back and has acquired a handful of studios.
Saber Interactive was acquired by the conglomerate in 2020 for $525 million and Gearbox was acquired a year later for a handsome fee of $1.3 billion. Bold moves like these could paint a target behind their backs, and also cause a lot of financial troubles. The futures of these studios are now unclear given recent reports that Embracer is selling Saber and the CEO and co-founder of Gearbox has laid several options on how to move forward.

As part of its restructuring program, embattled giant Embracer Group is selling the studios behind Borderlands and the Snowrunner in multi-million dollar deals.
After the buying frenzy in 2020, in which Swedish firm Embracer Group merrily ran around buying all the studios it could get its hands on, we now appear to be entering a period of divestment.
With Embracer forced to embark on a major restructuring campaign following the collapse of a deal worth $2bn in 2023, reports emerged that the firm was thinking about selling Gearbox Entertainment, the studio behind the hit Borderlands franchise.
According to sources over at Kotaku, a deal to sell Gearbox is in the final stages of being agreed, with Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford reportedly telling staff in a meeting this week that more would be announced in the coming weeks. Pitchford declined Kotaku’s invitation to comment officially on the matter.

Borderlands is branching out to Hollywood in the form of a connected film franchise akin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Inspired by the success of a shared universe type of series and the recent surge of somewhat successful video games to live-action adaptations, Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford is optimistic for the future stating that the upcoming film based on their IP will be the first of many.
Adapting stories into another medium offers the opportunity to expand the original narrative and explore the world in more depth. This transition allows the developers to concentrate on specific aspects that they originally intended. The world of Borderlands is vast enough to benefit from this kind of storytelling, which can include new pieces of lore, such as the introduction of certain missing characters. The possibilities are endless!

Borderlands 4 might be in the cards for an official announcement soon if Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford’s comments are any indication. The popular franchise is set for a movie adaptation to be released on 8th August 2024. So, the signs are that Gearbox would want to make use of the hype train to release another Borderlands game.
While he did not name anything specific, he stated that he and his studio are involved in creating something that is going to be their best project to date. And point to be noted here is that he did not have to talk about it. But he made sure he gave fans just enough to keep them hooked for the next installment in the franchise. However, it is all speculation as no official statement has been released on any of the official Borderlands channels on community forums.

In the wake of the new trailer this week, Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford has said Borderlands is merely the start of a ‘cinematic universe’.
Already a popular series of shooter videogames, Borderlands and its colourful line in humour is being brought to cinemas by Eli Roth. And, as the first trailer finally emerged this week after a series of delays – filming on Borderlands originally began in 2021 – Gearbox Software founder Randy Pitchford has said it’s but one chapter in a much larger cinematic universe.
Pitchford, whose studio made the original games and also serves as an executive producer on this summer’s Borderlands film, talked to IGN about the ambitious plans in place to turn the shooter series into a broader movie franchise.
“One of the cool things about the movie is we’ve created a cinematic universe that lives side by side with the video game universe,” Pitchford said.

The first trailer for Eli Roth's "Borderlands" has drawn mixed responses from fans of the original video games. Some are unhappy with the casting choices for characters, like comedian Kevin Hart as tough guy Roland and Cate Blanchett as Lilith, a character who was in her 20s in the first "Borderlands" game. And then there are the characters who didn't get cast at all.
Lilith and Roland were two of the four playable characters in Gearbox Software's original chaotic shooter-looter, which allowed up to four players to team up and take on the hostile planet of Pandora in the search for a legendary Vault. Lilith has the advantage of strange powers that allow her to become temporarily invisible, while Roland is highly effective with heavy guns and has an automatic turret for backup. But missing from the trailer for "Borderlands" -- and apparently from the whole movie, unless...

Cate Blanchett’s Lilith travels to a planet she hates to find a massive treasure hidden in a vault in the first trailer for Lionsgate’s Borderlands. Lilith can’t do the treasure hunt alone and is forced to team up with an odd assortment of people on a planet that has an actual gully made of piss.

Filming wrapped on director Eli Roth‘s adaptation of the Borderlands video game series from Gearbox and 2K way back in June of 2021. A year and a half later, Deadpool director Tim Miller had to step in to handle the project’s two weeks of reshoots because Roth had the chance to finally – after sixteen years – make a feature based on the Thanksgiving faux trailer he put together for the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse. The Borderlands reshoots have been completed, Thanksgiving has come and gone, and Lionsgate is now gearing up to finally release Borderlands into the world on August 9th. With just over five months to go until that date arrives, Lionsgate has unveiled a trailer for the film, and you can check that out in the embed above.

Cate Blanchett is back in a wig and a franchise, following her iconic “Thor: Ragnarok” campiness. The Oscar winner and “Tár” lead actress transforms into vigilante Lilith for Eli Roth’s star-studded “Borderlands” video-game adaptation.
Blanchett’s character is an infamous outlaw who returns to her home planet of Pandora on a mission to track down the missing daughter of the universe’s top leader, Atlas (Edgar Ramírez). Lilith enlists former elite mercenary Roland (Kevin Hart), pre-teen demolitionist Tiny Tina (“Barbie” breakout Ariana Greenblatt), her bodyguard Krieg (Florian Munteanu), mad scientist Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), and robot Claptrap (Jack Black) to help.
“These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power,” the synopsis reads. “The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other.

Hyped as an interactive sequel to James Cameron’s 1986 classic, Aliens: Colonial Marines was a disappointment in 2013. We look back at how its plot could have changed the Alien franchise…
In 2011, it all looked so promising. As narrated by Gearbox Software studio boss Randy Pitchford, a demo of Aliens: Colonial Marines, unveiled at that year’s E3, hinted at the kind of game fans of the Alien franchise had been eagerly awaiting for years. It was a first-person shooter made by a respected studio – Gearbox had just had a hit with Borderlands – and was billed as a direct sequel to James Cameron’s 1986 film, Aliens. It even had a couple of familiar actors returning to provide their voices.
The demo gave a tantalising glimpse of what looked like a thoroughly engrossing narrative blaster. It took the player back to Lv-426, the setting of Alien and Aliens, and as one of several Colonial Marines,...

Filming wrapped on director Eli Roth‘s adaptation of the Borderlands video game series from Gearbox and 2K in June of last year. Seven months later, Deadpool director Tim Miller had to step in to handle the project’s two weeks of reshoots because Roth had the chance to finally – after seventeen years – make a feature based on the Thanksgiving faux trailer he put together for the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse. Roth’s Thanksgiving slasher is scheduled to reach theatres on November 17, 2023, the Friday before the Thanksgiving holiday. Now Deadline has broken the news that Borderlands will reach theatres about eight months later, on August 2, 2024. So we still have a year to wait before we’ll be able to watch this one.
We had heard that The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin wrote the screenplay for Borderlands, but according to Deadline the final script was actually written by Roth and Joe Crombie.

Milt Larsen, the magician and TV writer who co-founded Hollywood’s famed Magic Castle night spot, died May 28 in Los Angeles. He was 92.
Larsen had deep roots in the world of magic and in Los Angeles. His father, William Larsen Sr., was a prominent local defense attorney and a performing magician. His mother, Geraldine, made early appearances on TV as “The Magic Lady.” Milt Larsen worked as a writer for TV game shows including “Truth or Consequences” during 18 years of Bob Barker’s tenure as host in the 1950s, ’60s and early ’70s.
Larsen teamed with his older brother, William Larsen Jr., and William’s wife, Irene, in the early 1960s to transform a Gothic renaissance mansion on Franklin Avenue in the heart of Hollywood into a clubhouse designed to cater to working magicians. The trio created the Academy of Magical Arts, but the venue became known as the Magic Castle.

Exclusive: After word circulated today on the fanboy sites that Eli Roth has been supplanted by Deadpool’s Tim Miller on the long gestating Lionsgate vidgame adaptation Borderlands, allow Deadline to lend a little insight to what is actually happening. Roth handed over the reins on two weeks of reshoots to his pal Miller, because he has to get going with Thanksgiving, the horror film based on a mock trailer that Roth made for the Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez Grindhouse film. Roth has not been fired, despite a flurry of speculative reports to the contrary.

E3 2020 has been canceled as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, many studios have stepped forward to set up their own digital events designed to capture the magic of E3 and preserve the traditional June reveal season. These online events are sure to be full of surprises, memorable moments, and incredible trailers.
And if they’re anything like E3s of the past, they’ll also feature games that will generate quite a bit of hype but will never see the light of day. Video games get canceled quietly all the time, but there’s nothing quite as strange as a game that makes a splash at the biggest show of the year and then vanishes without a trace.

“The audience is real and the business scales to the quality of the entertainment,” “Borderlands” executive producer Randy Pitchford says Video games have come a long way since “Super Mario Bros.” More than 30 years since its release, a game like “The Last of Us” doesn’t look or feel a thing like the 8-bit adventures of an Italian plumber in the Mushroom Kingdom. So how come the movies based off video games are still stuck in the 8-bit era? Despite the genre’s rough reputation and mixed box office results, Hollywood is now looking to adapt the biggest gaming franchises as well as artful indie games and more serious, critical darlings. The hope is that the industry’s attitude toward video game movies and shows is changing, and that critics and audiences will be more receptive. “Hollywood is definitely taking video games more seriously than they ever have before,” Randy Pitchford,...

Kevin Hart has officially joined the cast of “Borderlands,” the adaptation of the popular video game franchise that will star Cate Blanchett and is being directed by Eli Roth.
Hart was first rumored to be involved in the film back in December by The Illuminerdi, and his deal has now closed after months of negotiations. Hart will play Roland, a skilled ex-soldier turned mercenary, in what will be a more dramatic turn for the comedian.
“I’m thrilled to be working with Kevin,” Roth said in a statement. “‘Borderlands’ is a different kind of role for him, and we are excited to thrill audiences with a side of Kevin they’ve never seen before. He’s going to be an amazing Roland.”
