It’s a Hollywood cliche you have to hire the nicest actors to play the meanest people, and on “Under the Bridge” a group of struggling, lonely teens committing violent crimes certainly qualifies.
Unlike other shows about teens, where the cast is pushing 30, the kids on Hulu’s miniseries all are played by actors aged 12 to 16. This created a few challenges during production, due to the dark true-life plot, which centers on small-town British Columbia and the kids who assault and kill their classmate Reena Virk one night, and then basically all cover for each other while the case unfolds.
We wanted to “[give] them permission to explore the cruelty of their characters,” creator Quinn Shephard said to IndieWire. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Under the Bridge Season 1, Episodes 1 & 2.] Hulu’s true-crime drama Under the Bridge brings to life the real-life story of Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta), a teen girl who was murdered in the ’90s and almost every one of her peers is currently a suspect as the limited drama series unfolds. But some are more suspicious than others as tough-girl Josephine “Jo” Bell (Chloe Guidry) projects as mob boss-aura proclaiming herself the “John Gotti of Seven Oaks,” the boarding house for wayward teen girls. Meanwhile, is there more to Warren Glowatski (Javon “Wanna” Walton)? It’s quite clear that Reena’s pal Dusty (Aiyana Goodfellow) is cracking under pressure as investigator Cam Bentland (Lily Gladstone) seeks answers surrounding the crime. Bettina Strauss/Hulu And yet, not everything is as it appears, allowing for the mystery to unfold little by little. When it came time to take on these roles, the teens at...

Plot: based on acclaimed author Rebecca Godfrey’s book about the 1997 true story of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk who went to join friends at a party and never returned home. Through the eyes of Godfrey and a local police officer, the series takes us into the hidden world of the young girls accused of the murder — revealing startling truths about the unlikely killer.
Review: While crime exists worldwide, North America’s glut of true crime stories is centered on the United States. We often take for granted that our neighbors in the Great White North are more than America’s nice neighbors or denizens of the Fifty-First State. Canada is a massive country with its own good and bad, with crimes just as heinous as anything we see in America. While the events depicted in Under The Bridge are not as scary as serial killer tales, the story it retells is every bit as disturbing.

The new Hulu series Under the Bridge is infuriating. That’s not to say the series is not well done or crafted—in fact, far from it. This is bold storytelling that challenges the viewer to rethink their misconceptions. The result is appointment-viewing television that, by the end of the series, showcases some uncommonly powerful performances.
No, it’s infuriating because of what transpires from “actual” events. It’s tragic and horrific, and words cannot adequately describe the atrocities that occurred in the small, picturesque seaside town in British Columbia, Alberta, Canada. Under the Bridge is where the key players wish the story stayed, never seeing the light of day.

Dick Wolf’s new partnership with Netflix, Homicide: New York, celebrates the city’s bluest – those investigators who specialize in the aftermath of untimely death. The true crime docuseries follows the format of Law & Order, and is forced to dramatically condense the work done by law enforcement, like so many dusty boxes in an evidence room.
“On the island of Manhattan, there are two detective squads dedicated to homicides: Manhattan North and Manhattan South,” each episode begins. “They investigate the most brutal and difficult murders. These are their stories.” Central Park is a shared story for all New Yorkers, whether their own neighborhood boasts Tompkins Park, Morningside Park, or through the arch at Washington Square.
Native New Yorkers of all boroughs, and tourists from around the world visiting Strawberry Fields in the ‘90s probably saw Daphne Abdela and Christopher Vasquez rollerblading out of the corners of their eyes. Central Park was their neighborhood park.

“How to Become a Mob Boss” is a docuseries that revisits the lives of some of the most famous criminals in history.
Al Capone, Frank Lucas, Salvatore Riina, John Gotti, Whitey Bulger, or the renowned Pablo Escobar. Do they sound familiar, right? In this series narrated by Peter Dinklage, we’ll have the opportunity to relive the defining moments of these individuals who were all prominent leaders of criminal organizations. Without any scruples, they were able to establish crime as a lucrative business and a way of life.
The series is presented as a guidebook for climbing the corporate ladder, like a marketing manual that combines archival footage with animations and, above all, plenty of irony. The result is an engaging documentary about the lives of these criminals.

A new Netflix docuseries is drawing fresh attention to Twin Flames Universe, a group that some have called a cult.
Escaping Twin Flames exposes the world of Jeff and Shaleia Divine (also known as Jeff and Shaleia Ayan), a married couple who run an online community dedicated to connecting people with their twin flames. Through coaching and various exercises, members are told they’ll be guided to the person they are destined to be with. But ex-members and family of current members say that Jeff and Shaleia are abusive and controlling and that the Tfu has scammed followers out of thousands of dollars, encouraged stalking behavior, and even pressured people to transition genders.

Get Gotti, a Netflix docuseries, is currently topping the most-watched charts. A fascination with the mobster is nothing new. Since his arrest in the 1990s, John Gotti has fascinated crime aficionados and has been at the center of organized crime lore. Gotti’s illegal dealings, arrest, and death in 2002 are well-documented. The lives of his children are also fairly public. Still, there is one member of the Gotti family who has focused on living in obscurity since John Gotti’s death. What happened to John Gotti’s wife, Victoria Digiorgio?
How did John Gotti and Victoria Digiorgio meet?
Before the crime family and before the indictments, John Gotti and Victoria Digiorgio were just two young New Yorkers who met in a bar. The duo were just 16 and 18 when they fell in love. They dated for four years and married in 1962, at just 20 and 22 years old.

The weekend before Halloween, it would be easy to expect audiences to sit down for some spooky TV. But looking at the streaming and linear charts for the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report for the week of Oct. 23 to 29, you’d be forgiven if you couldn’t guess the season.
Only two programs across both charts this week could be deemed Halloween-adjacent: the Netflix horror drama “The Fall of the House of Usher” in seventh on the streaming chart after several weeks in the top 10 and “Goosebumps,” on Hulu and Disney+, which lands at ninth on the streaming chart.
Beyond those, the familiar fare of movies and prestige TV content is dominating the streaming chart with reality and competition series accounting for most of the linear top 10. Case in point: “No Hard Feelings,” a summer theatrical release starring Jennifer Lawrence, tops the streaming chart. The comedy drew 2.4 million households during...

Netflix’s Get Gotti puts the spotlight on a New York gangster icon, whose camera-ready presence signaled his downfall. The prosecutorial team sees John Gotti as an affront to decency. The capos, soldiers, and neighborhood acquaintances see only a larger-than-life street savior, with the balls and brains to make something of the communities he oversees.
The FBI and New York’s Organized Crime Task Force (Octf) couldn’t get their heads around it. Everyone on Carmine Street had no doubt the feds were itching to nail John Gott to a high-voltage crucifix so they could display him like a Christmas tree ornament. But the real sins committed are those against the organization Gotti headed. The Teflon Don broke more mafia edicts than federal crimes. That put him in the spotlight, a place where it’s easy to mistake exposure for protection.

Netflix has brought forth some amazing true crime docu-series like Murdaugh Murders, Making a Murderer, Fear City New York vs. Mafia, and many more with gripping yet true accounts of events and an extremely interesting execution style that completely hooks the audience to the screen. Another organized crime docu-series, Get Gotti, directed by Sebastian Smith, was recently added to the list. Get Gotti is a compelling and intense story revolving around the 1980s Gambino clan boss, John Gotti. This three-part documentary series brought forth an intense anecdote of how John Gotti remained elusive to the FBI until some bugs placed in his headquarters revealed all his criminal deeds. The documentary series did a pretty good job portraying the true accounts of organized crime, the FBI’s constant effort to catch Gotti, and the mafia boss’s eventual downfall.

John Gotti III , 30, was suspended from boxing in Florida for six months after a brawl with legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather, 46, on Sunday night.
A Florida State Athletic Commission spokesperson said that the decision was made on the same night as the fight.
After their match on Sunday, Gotti went up to Mayweather and attempted to throw punches at him, which led the 46-year-old to fight back.
Mayweather was seemingly toying with his opponent for the first five rounds as the altercation began within a minute of the sixth round.
Although it’s been reported that the two boxers “ended up hashing things out,” Gotti’s family took their fight even further.

Before starring on HBO's hit prestige drama "The Sopranos," Steven Van Zandt's claim to fame was as a solo artist, hit songwriter, activist, and member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. He scored the memorable role of the wingtip-wearing consigliere Silvio Dante on "The Sopranos" despite no acting experience. As advisor to crime boss Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini), Van Zandt's Dante is more than a wise guy caricature; Silvio is among the most level-headed members of Tony's crew, mediating meetings and executing orders but unafraid to tell his boss the truth (which Van Zandt compared to working with The Boss). In Brett Martin's "The Sopranos: The Complete Book," Van Zandt describes Tony's lifelong friend as "the only member of the family who was happy where he was" with few ambitions beyond those in his backstory – a background created by Van Zandt himself.

Taron Egerton knows about fame — especially after the attention he received for his award-winning work as Elton John in 2019’s “Rocketman.” But Egerton never felt as popular as he did on July 23 when Britney Spears posted videos on her Instagram of them together in London.

Exclusive: Oscar-winning screenwriters Bobby Moresco (Crash) and Nick Vallelonga (Green Book) have partnered with Midnight Run scribe George Gallo and John Gotti Jr. to develop the series Betrayal examining John Gotti and the Fall of La Cosa Notra.
The New York gangster—otherwise known as the Teflon Don, the Dapper Don—was a Caesar, an Emperor… a King. His flamboyant lifestyle and frequent public trials as the head of the Gambino crime family, which controlled New York’s largest organized-crime syndicates, made him not only a prominent figure in the 1980s and ’90s, but also one of the most well-known organized crime bosses in American history. Gotti’s rise from a loyal soldier to Boss of Bosses, and ultimately to his sentencing to life imprisonment after being betrayed by his underboss, Sammy Gravano, is legendary.

In Showtime’s new docuseries “Gossip” a recording of Donald Trump pretending to be his own publicist is played; a story about Tom Cruise’s front teeth falling out during a dinner with former New York Post editor-in-chief Col Allen is told; and 91-year-old Cindy Adams defends her past and present friendships with Roy Cohn, Imelda Marcos, John Gotti, Gen. Manuel Noriega and, of course, Trump.
But beyond salacious Page Six stories and Adams’ questionable friendships, “Gossip,” is at its core an examination of power and how Rupert Murdoch fundamentally shifted the foundation of the news industry via the New York Post and its tabloid journalism.
The four-part docuseries explores how New York City’s most prominent gossip columnists – Liz Smith, George Rush, Richard Johnson and Adams – built their careers and used their power.

New movie Capone is set in the twilight years of America’s most infamous mobster. The slashes across his cheek which gave him his nickname “Scarface” are still there, but the movie is more concerned with deeper wounds. In spite of the Tommy gun and the Cotton Club from Hell scenes, Josh Trank’s Al Capone biopic is a tearjerker, not a gangster movie. Capone is 47 and his mind is rotting from the dementia caused by years of untreated syphilis. But then there were people in the industry who never thought the man who was the face of the mob had much going on under his thick skull. The statute of limitations on his tax evasion conviction had actually expired. If he hired a tax lawyer instead of a criminal lawyer, he might have gotten off.
Still, the mythology around him only grew. So much so that when Mario Puzo...

A little more than 20 years ago, Steve Van Zandt didn’t know if he’d ever work again. He quit the E Street Band in 1984 to pursue a solo career, but that dried up by the 1990s and he didn’t know where to turn next. “I literally went out into the wilderness,” he says. “I’m not exaggerating. I walked my dog for seven years. I’d be out for eight hours a day just thinking, ‘How’d I get here? If I ever get back, what will I do?...

The title of Matt Tyrnauer’s stone-the-bastard documentary about the corrupt lawyer, attack dog and inhuman being who everyone loved to hate comes from Donald Trump. “Where’s My Roy Cohn?” the President reportedly shouted in frustration when his attorney general Jeff Sessions dared to recuse himself from the Russia investigation. Cohn died in 1986, leaving Trump without the mentor and fixer who helped make him the Donald what he is today. Enough said.

One for all and all for one. The Codys are here to stay.
Animal Kingdom Season 4 Episode 13 was an emotionally charged finale with plenty of surprises.
And it looks like Angela is here to stay.
In the end, Angela good by J even if she has ulterior motives. J is probably quite aware of it, but he's got a secret tool in his pocket in the form of Frankie.
Pope had no use for J and wanted him out of the house, but Angela convinced him otherwise. And by the time the finale was over, Pope understood that the Codys survival rested on J's shoulders.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Animal Kingdom‘s altogether shocking Season 4 finale. If you’d rather watch first, read later, you know what to do, baby.
Leave it to Janine “Smurf” Cody to find a way to hiss “Screw you!” to her boys from beyond the grave. In Animal Kingdom’s surprise-filled Season 4 finale, the contents of her will set the stage for massive conflict in Season 5. The episode also included a heartbreaking resolution to Deran and Adrian’s story, a comeback that we (at least I) never saw coming, another big confession from Angela and an ending that almost seems designed to say,...

The Writers Guild of America ratcheted up its fight against three major talent agencies Monday when it countersued Wme, CAA, and UTA under a law that’s used to throw mob bosses in jail.
This consolidates the WGA-agency fight into one venue: Us District Court. The union filed its initial lawsuit in state court in April, but withdrew that complaint Monday.
The WGA alleges that the practice of packaging constitutes racketeering and violates antitrust laws. Packaging is when agencies bundle a project/script with talent from its ranks to sell a movie or TV show. Production companies pay a fee to the agency for that service.
It’s at the heart of the dispute that reached a head in April when 7,000 Hollywood writers fired their agents after the big agencies refused to budge on the practice — which the union wants to see abolished.

John Travolta’s played dozens of roles in his life — from a T-Bird to a Wild Hog, from mobster John Gotti to celebrity lawyer Robert Shapiro. But for his latest part, he portrays none other than the Cuban-American hitmaker, Pitbull.
In the video for his latest single, “3 to Tango,” it’s hardly apparent that Pitbull’s played by anyone else, much less a legendary actor. Circled by Pitbull’s fierce squad of dancers, The Most Bad Ones, a mysterious cue-balled high roller is filmed from behind, while sipping on a vodka soda.

As two former teen idols, both John Travolta and Devon Sawa know a thing or two about obsessive superfans. The two pair up in “The Fanatic,” a dramatic thriller about a middle-aged man whose obsession with a celebrity action star becomes dangerously intense. Travolta recently made waves with an unhinged performance as New York City mobster John Gotti in 2018’s “Gotti,” directed by “Entourage” star Kevin Connolly. Now he’s working with another unexpected director: former Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst.

When he is cheated out of his opportunity to finally meet Hunter, Moose gets a little help from his friend Leah (Ana Golja), a well-connected paparazzi photographer, who knows how to find celebrity homes. When alleged Gambino family boss Francesco “Frank” Cali was gunned down in front of his car outside his Staten Island home earlier this month, many people were stunned. The murder was the first killing of a New York area mob boss in more than 30 years, since Gambino family boss Paul Castellano was fatally shot in front of Sparks steakhouse in Manhattan, and many began speculating whether Cali’s death signified the resurgence of the mob or a new internal power struggle within the Gambino family.

We recently reported on the trials and tribulations everyone associated with “Gotti” experienced over the seven years expended in attempting to bring the biopic to the big screen (the film has more producers credited than the entire population of Lichtenstein.) . When the film did open, it earned the rare distinction of being unanimously panned by the critics surveyed on Rotten Tomatoes. So, I guess I’m out there on my own when I say I found the film to be quite satisfying on any number of levels. Mind you, I’m also a defender of Michael Cimino’s “Heaven’s Gate”, so you should take that into consideration. To read the reviews of this troubled production, one would think it was genuinely awful. It isn’t. In fact, there is much to recommend here, not the least of which is...

Normally, I don’t bother to cover poorly received films here. It’s easier to focus on the positive, at least outside of the awards race. However, this is a unique situation. The mob film Gotti opened last weekend, to some of 2018’s worst reviews. Well, some of in the sense that only a very small amount of press, notably those who were granted interview opportunities, were screened the movie in advance of its release. That led, in part, to a poor showing at the box office. Then, this week, the producers tried to use social media to spin it, claiming that audiences, the few who saw it, anyway, loved it, while critics were trying to keep you from seeing it. Simply put, that’s fake news, so it’s something I’m going to address today. The movie is a biopic of crime boss John Gotti. The plot synopsis...

For years, John Travolta pursued his dream of portraying the late New York crime boss John Gotti in a high profile biopic. The long, torturous road to the big screen took seven years before the film was finally released. Travolta had been brought on early due to his star power and passion for the project but despite the actor's extraordinary and often creative ways of publicizing the film, it has fallen flat at the boxoffice. The Hollywood Reporter attributes this to almost universally poor critic's reviews, although audience surveys indicate that those who have seen it viewed the film favorably. The production had to cope with inexperienced producers and patchy financing agreements before filming was completed in 2016. Lionsgate, the studio behind the theatrical distribution, got cold feet about releasing the movie, thus leading to further complications as alternate partnerships and financing had to be found to secure the theatrical engagements.
