Welcome to the latest instalment of a brand-new feature here on Nerdly, where one of our comic gurus, Ian Wells, delves into comics history and dissects Comics Interview, the long-running journal of interviews and criticism from David Anthony Kraft.
A Yak with Dak
Dak uses the Upfront space to plug alternative/independent comics, whilst also going out of his way to say Comics Interview strives to include them. Personally, I feel he is selling himself short in that regard. In the eight issues I have looked at so far, I feel the alternatives/indies have had decent representation. Look at #6 you had Berke Breathed talking Bloom County right alongside huge fanboy porn in the shape of Jla vs The Avengers! Comico was featured last time out, and the comics of First have been featured. It would be interesting to see how the early days of those two, their success and...

Queen Cleopatra is a Netflix documentary directed by Tina Gharavi and Victoria Adeola Thomas, starring Adele James, Craig Russell and Jada Pinkett Smith.
Do you remember the Joseph L. Mankiewicz movie, Cleopatra, starring Elisabeth Taylor? Well, absolutely nothing to do with it.
A documentary series that follows in the footsteps of African Queens: Njinga in its treatment and approach to dramatized documentary.
Queen Cleopatra About the series
To say it with (much) subtlety: the series is not a ten, nor a seven… from there, let’s go down and let everyone places it where they want. A series that undoubtedly lacks the means to recreate the grandeur of Ancient Egypt and that, without the actors or the imagination of I, Claudius (the mythical BBC series) pretends to do something similar, but with not enough resources for the choice of a subject so… grandiose.
And with such a brutal and imperial...

"Queen Cleopatra" is a new 'docudrama' TV series, narrated by Jada Pinkett Smith, that is not controversial just because a black actor was cast in the leading role, but that there is absolutely no explanation as to Who and How the massive pyramids and other sophisticated, astronomically-attuned architecture of ancient Egypt were constructed thousands of years before the reign of the 'pharaohs', streaming May 10, 2023 on Netflix:
"...'Queen Cleopatra' is the world’s most famous, powerful, and misunderstood woman -- a daring queen whose beauty and romances came to overshadow her real asset: her intellect. Cleopatra’s heritage has been the subject of much academic debate, which has often been ignored by Hollywood. Now our series re-assesses this fascinating part of her story..."
Cast also includes Craig Russell, John Partridge, Kaysha Woollery, Andira Crichlow, Greg Lockett and Philip Walker.

"It's a nightmare situation, for everyone involved." Signature Ent. in the UK has revealed the first official trailer for She Is Love, a romantic drama that is premiering at the 2022 London Film Festival this month. It's set to open in early 2023 in the UK, but with no US released confirmed yet. Coming face-to-face after being estranged for over a decade, divorced couple, Idris and Patricia, opt to revisit the past and traverse that treacherous path together, emerging open to new beginnings. Will they end up back together… or not? Hard to tell from this trailer, but I hope they don't. BIFA nominated filmmaker Jamie Adams' intense and involving romantic drama She Is Love stars Haley Bennett and BAFTA nominated + BIFA award winner Sam Riley, along with Marisa Abela, Rosa Robson, and Craig Russell. This also seems to have some awkard humor that brings levity to this emotionally turbulent story. Might...

The late Richard Benner’s 1977 “Outrageous!” blazed trails as both a hit Canadian export and positive screen depiction of gay life, two relative rarities at the time. Even then, some gay viewers found the funny-sad friendship between a hairdresser/professional drag queen and a young schizophrenic woman a bit old-fashioned. But everybody was won over by Craig Russell’s stage impersonations of Hollywood stars — schmaltz and camp being a reliable combination for gay cinema with crossover ambitions.
That formula has scarcely altered 43 years later for “Stage Mother.” It’s the latest from Thom Fitzgerald, whose 1997 “The Hanging Garden” was also shot in Nova Scotia, and helped herald a new, perhaps more politically bold and artistically adventuresome generation of gay Canadian filmmakers. His more recent work has fitted into a time-tested mould of sentimental seriocomedy, however. This tale of a small-town Texas matron who inherits her estranged son’s San Francisco drag bar offers up smiles,...

“The Cry” producer Synchronicity Films has optioned Craig Russell’s “Lennox” book series and will adapt the period Scotland-set thrillers for TV. Robert Murphy – whose extensive series credits include “Dci Banks,” “Inspector George Gently,” and “Vera” – is attached to handle the adaptation.
The “Lennox” series is set in tough inner-city Glasgow in the 1950s. The titular Lennox is a private eye, born in Scotland but raised in America after the Depression. He is billed as “a damaged man in a hard city at a hard time” and finds himself caught between three Glasgow crime bosses – The Three Kings.
“Craig Russell’s Lennox is a fascinating character, taking inspiration from the classic noir detective and infusing him with freshness and bite through intricately researched setting, authenticity of the period and compelling plot,” said Claire Mundell, managing director and creative director of Synchronicity. “We know that Robert will bring his wit and...

DJ Steve Dennis (Craig Russell) decides to return home to the small town of Cwmtwrch, Wales to hold a New Year’s Eve Party, with the hope of getting some new investors interested in his new business venture. Unfortunately for Steve and his guests, aliens have decided to invade, leaving them no choice but to defend themselves against the invaders.
Alien Party Crashers has a rather complicated plot, with the various events crossing over several decades, which involves abductions, time travel, killer aliens and several bodies falling from the sky. It seems an ambitious project with the low budget, but as the events unfold the various seams of the plot come nicely together,...

The worlds of Neil Gaiman and comics intertwine once more with Sandman Universe #1 from DC Comics! Large, sweeping landscapes and fever dreams abound in this series with artwork by a number of talented artists, with writing by Dan Watters, Kat Howard, Nalo Hopkinson, and Simon Spurrier. Also in today's Comics Corner: RoboCop: Citizens Arrest #5, B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know #9, Her Infernal Descent #4, Oblivion Song #6, and Black Torch Vol. 1.
*Recommendation* -- Sandman Universe #1: "From the mind of New York Times #1 bestselling author Neil Gaiman comes a new world filled with dreams, nightmares, and wonderful characters living together in a shared universe for a new story, unlike anything we’ve ever seen before.
A rift between worlds has opened, revealing a space beyond the Dreaming. Meanwhile, a book from Lucien’s library is discovered by a group of children in the waking world where it should not exist.

From the 2001 novel to the Starz TV series and beyond, the world of Neil Gaiman's American Gods is ever-expanding, and it continues to grow today with the release of Dark Horse Comics' American Gods: My Ainsel #1. The first issue in a new story arc featuring the continued adventures of Shadow and Wednesday, the new comic book features eye-catching artwork by Scott Hampton, and we caught up with the artist and colorist in a new Q&A feature to discuss what he enjoyed the most about working on the new story (which also features great cover art like the one shown above by Glenn Fabry).
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Scott! How did the opportunity to work on American Gods: My Ainsel come about, and what interested you in the project?

How did you first get into filmmaking?
Growing up in Swansea, there was a strong arts lineage thanks to local youth theatres and the legacy of Dylan Thomas. I was always into acting and was a child of the movies. I learnt a lot from BBC2 documentaries interviewing directors, from Ken Loach to Brian DePalma. Also, my mum is a Professor of Anthropology and her department at Swansea University was in the same building as media resources, so I was able to borrow Svhs cameras and learn to edit on the giant VHS editing decks they had back in the day! I learnt by doing.
What can we expect from your first feature film Canaries?
You can expect some laughs, scares, sci-fi intrigue and some political / social subtext should you go looking for it. Mostly it’s just a fun tale to be enjoyed with a beer and friends.

Canaries is a British feature getting a Horror Channel FrightFest screening this weekend. We've been taking a look...
Think of big screen science fiction, and it’s likely to bring to mind glossy images of alien spacecrafts obliterating the White House, monsters running amuck in New York or Tokyo, or a post-apocalyptic Los Angelean wasteland. It’s perhaps unsurprising that these are the moments which linger in our collective consciousness; on screen at least, such cataclysmic events are usually clustered around the world’s big cities, with filmmakers giving little thought to how they might play out elsewhere.
There have been exceptions of course, such as classics like Village Of The Damned (1960) and The Stepford Wives (1975) and, in more recent years, UK filmmakers have also been looking to redress the balance. Marc Price set his 2008 zombie movie Colin on a suburban British estate, for example, while Stephen Fingleton...
