A haunting lead performance from Marco Pigossi, steeped in melancholy and raw pain but also in moments of openness, optimism and even joy, helps make High Tide an affecting portrait of untethered gay men seeking meaningful connections. Writer-director Marco Calvani’s sensitively observed first feature draws parallels between the isolation of an undocumented Brazilian, nearing the end of his visa and disinclined to return home, and that of a Black American, secure in his tight friendship circle but very much aware he’s the minority in a predominantly white queer tourist mecca — and in the country at large.
About that setting — for anyone who loves Provincetown, this film and its enveloping sense of place will evoke fond associations with the historic fishing village and art colony on the tip of Cape Cod.

The main draw on the surface of writer-director Marco Calvani’s lovely if overly dramatic feature debut is the jaw-dislocating physical beauty of its star. That might sound crass, but “High Tide” is a movie that dares you not to be obsessed with — and attracted to — its leading man. Actor Marco Pigossi, Calvani’s real-life partners, enters the first frame as if sculpted out of marble, or butter even, stripping down to nothing and rushing into the sea off a desolate nude beach along Provincetown, Massachusetts, in a spin of anguish.
The cold open is a bookend “High Tide” will return to at its climax. It’s also a chilly plunge into a baptismal, hoped-for catharsis for Lourenço (Pigossi), a Brazilian immigrant with an expiring tourist visa reeling from a sudden breakup and now stuck in the United States, hoping to stay there. Bereft and abandoned by his unseen American...

Bloody Disgusting has the first word on Witchcraft Motion Picture Company and Good Wizard’s Creep Box, writer/director Patrick Biesemans’ cerebral sci-fi thriller that was recently shot on location in Manhattan.
The film follows a unique engineer at a technology firm specializing in communicating with “whispers” of the recently deceased. Through his exploration of this unsettling piece of newly-developed technology, his research deepens and he finds himself on a dark path as he becomes increasingly unglued from reality.
Bloody also has the above first still to share from the film starring Geoffrey Cantor (Netflix’s Daredevil), Sean Mahon (BBC’s EastEnders), Ian Lithgow (3rd Rock from the Sun), Katie Kuang (HBO’S Westworld), Annie Young (The Conjuring 2), and Annemarie Lawless (The Mountain).
An expansion of Biesemans’ short film of the same name that played North Bend Film Festival, FilmQuest, H.P Lovecraft Ff, Under Worlds, and San Francisco Short Film Festival.

Netflix, Sky Team For Writing Fellowship
Netflix and Sky have joined forces with Sex Education writer Bisha K Ali to launch a UK screenwriting fellowship for people from under-represented backgrounds. The scheme offers up to six successful applicants the chance to join a year-long program, during which they will receive £22,568 to write a spec script for an original idea, as well take on a placement in a Sky or Netflix writers’ room. “We’ve worked to design a programme that not only tries to remove some of the barriers to entering our industry, but provides the space, time and financial security to help writers develop their craft,” said Anne Mensah, Netflix UK’s VP of original series. The pairing of John Hawkes and Logan Lerman as father and son was always going to be an interesting one. Unfortunately, it’s a shame that End of Sentence doesn’t do more with that duo. While both are somewhat playing against type, the film surrounding them is so slight and so slack with its storytelling that it’s hard to appreciate them. A mix of narrative stumbling blocks and lack of notable dramatic conflict make it far too easy to see every turn of the road here. There are some very nice moments, but they don’t add up to make a flick that I can recommend today. The movie is a drama about a father and son attempting (at least on one end) to reconnect while on a road trip in Ireland. Frank Fogle (Hawkes) has always has a tough relationship with his troublemaking son Sean (Lerman). A genial and even withdrawn man,...

Chicago – Although “Philomena” sounds like a faraway land, it actually is a name of a real Irish lady, who lost her son through a Catholic adoption service that was designed to hide her out-of-wedlock pregnancy. Judi Dench portrays the title character as an older woman, with Steve Coogan as the reporter trying to help locate the son for her.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
This is basically a two character story, with the old lady and the reporter discovering something about themselves through the process. They travel together, they make discoveries together and ultimately come to conclusions about the circumstance together. The is partially a film about the Catholic Church – and their unique ability to sweep harsh sins under the rug – and it is also a testament to that church, whose power with their followers include a deep and abiding forgiveness. Comic actor Steve Coogan also co-wrote the screenplay, and matches Dame Judi in performance,...

Chicago – “Philomena” is not a state of being or location. It is the name of a woman whose child was taken away, through Catholic adoption services in Ireland during the mid 20th Century. Judi Dench portrays that woman in a modern context, and her costar is notable British comedian – and co-screenwriter of the story – Steve Coogan.
Steve Coogan was born to a working class family in Middleton, Greater Manchester, and his early studies in performance was at the Manchester Metropolitan School of Theater. He began his career as a comic and impressionist, and broke through on the popular 1990s British TV series, “Spitting Image.” Later that decade, he developed his most famous persona, that of politically incorrect talk show host Alan Partridge (a feature length film of the character – “Alan Partridge, Alpha Papa” – was released in Britain this year). And here we go... the acting categories you've all been very impatiently waiting for in Tfe's first wave of Oscar predictions for the year.
Will Previously Honored Movie Stars With Weird Character-Actor Hairdos Rule This Year?
As faithful readers know I like to keep my crystal ball risky with the bouncing and hope it doesn't shatter. In the first wave of predictions "what if" scenarios and "wild cards" are espectially compelling in the Supporting races. I mean why not? So little is yet known about future important matters like Amount of Screen Time, Nature of the Ensemble Roles, Best in Show Scene Stealing and even Post-Production "we'll fix it in post" Switcheroos where a film is rethought to better spotlight its MVPs. This early on there's no point in making boring predictions in which Oscar favorites hog all the categories though sometimes they do -- witness last year's All Previous Winner boredom in this category.

Director: Vera Farmiga Writers: Carolyn S. Briggs, Tim Metcalfe Starring: Vera Farmiga, Joshua Leonard, Dagmara Dominczyk, Donna Murphy, John Hawkes, Nina Arianda, Norbert Leo Butz, Michael Chemus, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Sean Mahon, Bill Irwin When I sat down to watch Vera Farmiga’s new film, Higher Ground, about one woman’s struggle to find her own voice while at the center of a close-knit fundamentalist Christian church, I was unsure what to expect, although I had my suspicions. Unfamiliar with This Dark World, the 2002 memoir by Carolyn S. Briggs, upon which this film is based, I approached this assignment with a number of preconceptions and yes, even prejudices. It’s difficult not to react in this way to a film that takes on religion and faith and spirituality because these are such personal matters. Beyond this, Higher Ground would also be an important film about big ideas, as well as the...
