LONDON -- The 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards will take place on Nov. 9 in Copenhagen at a venue yet to be determined, it was announced Thursday in the Danish capital. Brent Hansen, president of creative and editor-in-chief of MTV Networks International; Lars Engberg, the mayor of Copenhagen; Brian Mikkelsen, Danish culture minister, and Martin Geertsen, mayor of culture, made the announcement at the Kobenhavns Radhus, Copenhagen's city hall. MTV started on television in Denmark in May and Hansen said, "By bringing the awards to Copenhagen, we are further underscoring our commitment to the Danish marketplace." Mayor Engberg said, "In recent years we have focused on the development of Copenhagen's creative industries and positioned the city as a world-class location. With the MTV Europe Music Awards, Copenhagen will yet again receive international focus and attention and, at the same time, the awards will be a magnificent event for the people of Copenhagen and visitors to the city." Previous locations for the MTV Europe Music Awards, which were first staged in Berlin in 1994, have included London, Paris, Rome, Barcelona and, earlier this month, in Lisbon.
