Peacock has announced the cast for Season 2 of the reality competition series “The Traitors.” Like Season 1, the show features reality stars from a variety of other series like “The Bachelor” and “The Real Housewives.” Unlike Season 1, the second season cast will be all reality stars, without any non-celebrities in the competition.
Familiar facing joining Season 2 include Maksim Chmerkovskiy of “Dancing With the Stars,” Phaedra Parks of “Married to Medicine” and “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” two-time “Survivor” winner Sandra Diaz-Twine, Tamra Judge of “The Real Housewives of Orange County” and Bachelor Nation alum Peter Weber.
Unfolding in a remote castle in the Scottish Highlands, host Alan Cumming guides the contestants through a series of challenges with the aim of winning $250,000. However, the contestants deemed “the Traitors” will come up with a plan to steal the prize from the contestants deemed “the Faithful.”

“The Best” has left us.
Tina Turner, the Queen of Rock ‘n Roll, is dead at age 83 after suffering from a long illness. Turner passed away at her home in Küsnacht, outside Zurich, Switzerland.
“With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model,” Turner’s spokesperson Bernard Doherty said in a statement.
Turner began her career with husband Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm in 1957 and performed under stage name Little Ann before debuting as Tina Turner in 1960 with single “A Fool in Love.” Tina and Ike Turner collaborated on hits “River Deep, Mountain High,” “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine,” and “Proud Mary” before disbanding in 1976.
Turner went on to launch a career comeback with 1984 hit song “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” which won the Grammy for Record of the Year. The track lent its title to a 1993 biopic adapted from Turner’s autobiography “I,...

Summer has ended, and school is in session as Quinta Brunson and Abbott Elementary taught a masterclass at the 6th Annual Black Reel TV Awards presented by idobi.
Brunson and her freshman comedy, Abbott Elementary proved that it’s just simple math as they racked up seven wins at this year’s Black Reel Television Awards. She won four awards on her own as she received Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series for Abbott Elementary and Outstanding Guest Actress for A Black Lady Sketch Show. Brunson triumphed in a surprise upset of the comedy actress category over Issa Rae, the sentimental favorite, in her farewell season of Insecure.
While Glover led the pack in individual nominations with five, he was able to take home one win for Outstanding Actor, Comedy Series for Atlanta.

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson went from spinning records at last year’s Oscar ceremony to winning a statuette of his own tonight, for directing Best Documentary Feature champ Summer of Soul.
The acclaimed DJ, music historian, and founding member of the Roots – The Tonight Show’s house band – accepted the award along with producers Joseph Patel, Robert Fyvolent and David Dinerstein. He began his speech by acknowledging the other nominees for Best Documentary Feature — Ascension, Attica, Flee, and Writing With Fire — then became emotional as he referenced the subject of his film: the long-overlooked Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969, a series of concerts that showcased some of the greatest African American musical talent ever assembled on stage. The concerts were filmed at the time, with the intention of packaging them into a TV special, but back then the white-run television networks gave a collective shrug and passed.

Both projects were nominated for Outstanding Broadcast Editing and Cinematography.

Kathy Comerford was working on the 70th floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept 11, 2001 when United Flight 175 flew into the building at 9:03 a.m. She was literally blown out of her shoes. “I was looking for my shoes to get up, so I could get back down the stairs,” Comerford recalled. “I kept thinking this building is not going to take me. There’s no way I’m going [to die]. I’m going home to my kids. But here we are now. Our family now, our motto is, be thankful. Don’t sweat the small stuff. It’s not worth it. Embrace the fact there you are here for a reason. I was saved for a reason and many others didn’t have the same luck and fortune.”

Former Assistant Chief of The New York City Fire Department Joseph Pfeifer is among the first responders who have been celebrated and commemorated for their brave actions during the 9/11 attacks. Now, on the historical event’s 20th anniversary, Pfeifer says there’s a “new generation of heroes” worth honoring.
During a TCA panel, where he joined fellow 9/11 first responders and survivors Ron Difrancesco and Jason Thomas, and the producing team of National Geographic’s 9/11: One Day In America, Pfeifer recalled seeing firefighters applaud medical staffers who were on the front-lines of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“It was the moment where 9/11 met the pandemic,” the former Nyfd chief said. “We saw a new generation of heroes. So while we feel things are falling apart we have to take a look where we feel this sense of being together.”

In the Emmy-nominated HBO documentary Tina, music icon Tina Turner remarks, “I don’t like to pull out old clothes.”
She’s not talking about her wardrobe.
Turner is referring to distant memories—especially, the abusive relationship with her first husband, rock pioneer Ike Turner, who regularly beat and raped her. It’s not a past she’s ever cared to revisit, yet somehow the public or the media won’t leave it be.
“Why are we so fascinated with this? Why can’t we allow her to move on?” asks Dan Lindsay, who directed the film with T.J. Martin. “It’s definitely a question that we were trying to pose within the film.”
One reason we can’t detach from Turner’s story of trauma is that it’s so compelling—a woman surmounting incredible obstacles to achieve her dreams. There’s a mythic quality to it.

Even Val Kilmer doesn’t consider the movie he produced about his life to be a documentary.
“Val,” which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this month and begins streaming on Amazon Prime Video Aug. 6, traces his career from his “Top Gun” breakthrough to recent health struggles, incorporating footage from Kilmer’s vast personal archive into the film. His son, Jack, also an actor, supplements his father’s narration, the elder Kilmer’s voice virtually unrecognizable from his heyday as a performer due to treatment for throat cancer.
“Val would say in relation to this film that we are not making a documentary; we’re making a Val Kilmer movie where he’s playing himself as Val Kilmer,” co-director Leo Scott says.
However you classify “Val” — Cannes labeled it a documentary — it is the latest in a series of films self-produced by their star subjects that, to some, raise questions...

This September will mark the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City. To recognize the significance of that day as well as honor the lives lost, National Geographic is releasing a six-part documentary series, “9/11: One Day in America.” Take a first look at the trailer below.
“9/11: One Day in America” will chronicle the events of September 11, 2001 through gripping first-person narratives of the first responders and survivors who were there. The first trailer should prepare audiences for the first-hand accounts of what they’ll be seeing; it isn’t just hearing the screams and shouts of people on the ground or in the building but, at times, watching debris fall from inside the Trade Center itself.
Each episode will focus on the different levels of heroism people resorted to during the event and boasts never-before-seen footage, including from apartments and streets just after the planes hit.

AFI Docs, the annual nonfiction film festival in the D.C. region, returns on Tuesday as a hybrid of in-person events and virtual screenings, a format mandated by ongoing safety concerns over Covid-19. While the ability to host at least some screenings at the AFI Silver Theater parallels the reopening of movie venues in general, this year’s festival reflects ongoing caution and a deference for health and safety. The selections themselves point more to “personal stories and personal reflections,” in the words of Sarah Harris, the director of programming for AFI Docs, at a time when people are just now rediscovering human connection. “A lot of what the country needs is healing,” Harris said. “We are coming out of the pandemic, coming out of a lot of political trauma in D.C. We are looking to have that healing through this form of art.” The event includes 77 films from 23 countries,...

Oscar winners Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin teamed up to direct “Tina,” an HBO documentary that chronicles the turbulent life and phenomenal success of its subject, music icon Tina Turner. “The most important things is knowing that people are finding resonance with the film and Tina’s story,” Martin says when discussing how the film quickly became HBO’s most successful documentary of the year with over one million viewers its first week. “Tina Turner is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in that equation,” Lindsay adds. Watch the exclusive video interview about the rock legend above.
“We were actually kind of hesitant when producers Simon [Chinn] and Jonathan [Chinn] asked us to do it,” Lindsay admits. “Are two men really the right people to tell this story? We had been approached to do a lot of celebrity focused biopics or documentaries. That was just never really of interest to us.

Tina Turner does not like to talk about herself and her life with abusive ex-husband and artistic collaborator Ike Turner. She notes this in Tina, a new HBO documentary about her life. But she is aware that public interest in it, which is why she has to keep on telling us all about it. This is show business after all, and if she doesn’t, somebody else will. First it was People magazine. Then it was Kurt Loder’s I, Tina. That was followed by a film adaptation, What’s Love Got to Do With It?
One would have hoped that that film would have been the end of it for Turner, her story of abuse and late career triumph captured on film to great acclaim and with an Oscar-worthy performance by Angela Bassett. Nearly 30 years later, however, Tina is back as the subject of T.J. Martin and Daniel Lindsay’s documentary.

HBO’s Tina Turner documentary debuted to about 100,000 more viewers than did its December Bee Gees doc.
The debut of “Tina” drew more than 1.1 million total viewers across all HBO platforms on Saturday night, making the the biggest premiere for an HBO documentary since 2019’s “Leaving Neverland.” The Bee Gees documentary, “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” bowed to about 1 million total viewers across various HBO platforms.
“Tina” is officially the top doc debut in the HBO Max era. “Leaving Neverland” landed about 1.7 million total viewers with its debut two years ago.
“Leaving Neverland” focused on two men, Wade Robson and James Safechuck, who say they were sexually abused by Michael Jackson when they were boys. “Leaving Neverland” was a two-part documentary that also generated an after-show hosted by Oprah Winfrey.

In HBO’s new documentary “Tina,” Tina Turner’s relationship to her abusive husband Ike is fully examined, and at times almost overshadows the larger story about Tina’s prolific career that led to her being dubbed the Queen of Rock ‘N Roll.
Yet throughout the film, Tina barely talks about Ike directly and the parts of “Tina” that tell that story rely heavily on archival footage — and that’s on purpose, a conscious decision by filmmakers Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin, who said they wanted to avoid forcing the 81 year-old rock legend to re-live her traumatic experiences.
In the film, Tina tells the directors, “I wanted to stop people from thinking that Ike & Tina was so positive, that we were such a great team. I thought, if nothing else, at least people know.”
Lindsay told Vanity Fair, “the trauma of abuse doesn’t just go away–that’s something...

One of the most famous lines from Tina Turner’s career came in her introduction to the version of John Fogerty’s “Proud Mary” released by Ike & Tina Turner in 1971. “We never ever do nothing nice and easy,” she said in a sultry snarl. “We always do it nice and rough.”
“Tina,” the documentary about Turner that premiered at the 2021 Berlin International Film Festival, has moments where it tries to be nice and easy, sliding over difficult portions in Turner’s life in an attempt to find a celebratory tone. But the film, too, mostly settles for nice and rough, which fits a woman who says in the film, “It wasn’t a good life. It was in some areas, but the goodness didn’t overcome the bad.”

More films with Eddie Izzard and Judi Dench is something that the world needs. They starred together in Stephen Frears’ Victoria & Abdul in 2017 and now they reunite in the Andy Goddard-directed Six Minutes To Midnight which will be released by IFC Films in theaters and on demand starting today.
Written by Izzard, Goddard and Celyn Jones, Six Minutes To Midnight is based on true events from 1939. The film follows teacher Thomas Miller (Izzard) who has taken a last-minute and controversial role teaching English to the daughters of high-ranking Nazis at the Augusta-Victoria College, Bexhill-on-Sea – a finishing school on the south coast of England.
Under the watchful eye of their headmistress Miss Rocholl (Dench), and her devout assistant Ilse Keller (Carla Juri), the girls practice their English and learn how to represent the ideal of German womanhood.

HBO’s feature documentary Tina is an intimate overview of Tina Turner, the person behind the musical icon. It is also a final statement, as the singer is moving on from the performance part of her life. The documentary tells Tina’s story the way the singer wanted it told: honestly.
Some of Turner’s musical highpoints are skipped, like her scene-stealing role as the Acid Queen in Tommy or her appearance on the bulk of Frank Zappa’s Overnight Sensation. But the story of her early rise to fame, and the oppressive influence her musical mentor, husband and onstage partner Ike Turner had on her personal and professional life is deftly explored. As is her fight for independence, recording the monumental Phil Spector production “River Deep, Mountain High,” and her 1980s global resurgence.

Directed and produced by Alex Winter, with Gale Anne Hurd and Glen Zipper also on board as producers, Mass Effect will be a gripping, frightening and, at times, hilarious look at the video-streaming platform, examining its humble origins within a pizzeria attic, and how it went on to become the largest media platform in history.

Offering access to key players in technology, business, media and politics, it will specifically tackle such subjects as surveillance, algorithmic capitalism, online radicalization, and the spread of fake news.

HBO has officially released the first trailer for “Tina,” a new documentary set to give fans a deeper look at Tina Turner’s life and career.
Set to the tune of her iconic song “Proud Mary,” the trailer follows an abbreviated timeline of the documentary itself, beginning with footage of Turner on stage early on in her career. “Look what I have done in this lifetime, with this body,” Turner narrates. “I’m a girl from a cotton field. I pulled myself above what was not taught to me.”
The documentary is set to give more insight into Turner’s time and relationship with Ike Turner, as well as how it impacted her career, telling “a story of trauma and survival, that gave way to a rebirth as the record-breaking queen of rock ‘n’ roll.” In a clip with Turner herself, the singer says bluntly, “I had an abusive life.

Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin co-directed the sports documentary Undefeated in 2011, and their Berlin Film Festival Special Gala, Tina, could have shared the same title. While this is set in the world of music, its emphasis is on the resilience, survival and comeback of its subject, singer Tina Turner. Featuring a contemporary interview with Turner herself, the HBO Documentary Films title mixes talking heads with archive interviews and footage to paint a vivid picture of a musical legend. This is clearly an authorized biography — it’s executive produced by Turner’s husband, Erwin Bach — but it has enough verve and insight to entertain and enlighten.

As Andy Warhol knew, fame is as much about myth-making as it is about talent. In the case of Tina Turner — unparalleled dancer, singer, and pioneering Black woman rockstar — talent was never an issue. For Turner, it was her story, and who was telling it, that nearly stymied her. From today’s vantage point, it’s hard to imagine a world where Tina Turner never got out from under the myth of the shared moniker of Ike & Tina Turner. She’s one of the only artists alive who could title a movie about herself solely with her first name.
That name, foisted on her by her abusive ex-husband without her knowledge (she was born Anna Mae Bullock), was the only thing she wanted in her 1978 divorce settlement. Ike retained sole rights to all of their recordings, including their Grammy-winning single “Proud Mary.” All Tina wanted was her name. With that in mind,...

HBO has released the first teaser trailer for “Tina,” a new documentary about legendary musician Tina Turner. Drawing on a wealth of never-before-seen footage spanning 60 years, audio tapes, personal photos, and new interviews with Turner herself, “Tina” promises an intimate and fresh look at the notoriously private icon. The broad strokes of Turner’s life have been pop culture fodder before, from her 1986 autobiography “I, Tina,” and the 1993 film “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” which drew from the book and starred Angela Bassett in an Oscar-nominated turn as the singer. However, “Tina” represents the first authorized feature documentary on Turner.
