Growing up, Kris Bowers felt like he was an outsider trying to fit in.
These days, he is anything but that in Hollywood. The Oscar-nominated composer has scored a wide array of projects in the past five years, ranging from “Green Book” to “When They See Us,” and worked with Ava DuVernay and Shonda Rhimes repeatedly. This year alone, the Daytime Emmy winner’s credits include “Origin” and “The Color Purple” in addition to “Chevalier,” “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” and “Haunted Mansion.”
It was during his middle school years — “a troubling time emotionally,” Bowers says — that he discovered how to channel his feelings through music. The L.A. native, who learned to play the piano at age 4 before expanding his training in classical and jazz, found himself gravitating back to the keyboard once puberty hit.

Nicholas Britell, Kris Bowers, Hildur Guðnadóttir Spotlight Film Music at Disney Hall With L.A. Phil
The Los Angeles Philharmonic took a major step forward over the weekend with its “Reel Change” series devoted to contemporary film composers.
By inviting Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir (“Joker”) and Americans Kris Bowers (“Green Book”) and Nicholas Britell (“Moonlight”) to curate programs of their music, and those of composers that inspired them, the Phil is formally acknowledging the importance of media music as a legitimate part of the contemporary musical scene.
Symphony programmers are notorious for ignoring film music unless it’s on a “pops” program or a live-to-picture event, which in recent years have proven extremely lucrative. The L.A. Phil has rarely programmed, much less celebrated, music for visual media on a subscription concert.
And the fact that the series included a woman and a person of color was more than a token nod to diversity, as this trio is among the most sought-after of modern composers for film,...

After more than a year in lockdown, little in the music industry is certain. But in the near-absence of live shows, Bandcamp Friday has become a rare constant. The monthly tradition — a digital holiday of sorts, during which Bandcamp waives its revenue share, channeling all proceeds directly to artists and labels who sell their music through the service — brought in a whopping $40 million for creators throughout 2020. It continued in February and March, and is scheduled to run through May. In honor of today’s edition, here are a bunch of...

In September of 2008, an unusual performance took place at downtown New York club Le Poisson Rouge. At stage right, opposite fellow six-string adventurer Marc Ribot, sat Lou Reed, conjuring clouds of free-rock energy from his guitar. Behind them, avant-garde mainstay John Zorn sent forth piercing, impassioned blasts of alto sax. And at the center of it all, churning with the fury of a whirlpool and dancing across his hand-painted drum kit with the control and flair of a flamenco master, was Milford Graves — the percussionist, healer, and interdisciplinary seeker who...

Thanksgiving is certainly a time for giving thanks and reflection — especially during this time. HBO’s special event Between the World and Me from Ta-Nehisi Coates as it tells an urgent story of hope and resilience. The special event is an adaptation of Coates’ best-selling book and Apollo stage performance of the same name. The book is recognized as a classic of the Black Lives Matter era and during a global pandemic against the backdrop of the killing of Breonna Taylor and global protests for Black lives. The medium of virtual reality has been marshaled to explore everything from nature to outer space, roller coaster thrills, the human body and fictional stories, but it’s never been put to use quite in the way of Traveling While Black.

For this writer, the quintessential moment of the 2018 Newport Jazz Festival came in transit. A quick stroll on Saturday afternoon took me from the main stage, where Laurie Anderson was wrapping up a set of luminous, exploratory string-trio free improv, to one of the smaller tents, where octogenarian Memphis piano master Harold Mabern, saxophonist Eric Alexander & Co. were busy muscling through a set of exquisite old-school hardbop. The transition was disorienting in the best way possible — an illustration of just how broad this legendary fest’s concept of jazz still is.

In advance of last week’s wide release of “Selma,” which chronicles the freedom marches led by Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1965, Paramount Pictures released the film’s soundtrack January 6th. The album includes songs performed by The Impressions, Otis Redding, Martha Bass, and Fink. It also features three compositions by Jason Moran, who scored the film. And, last but certainly not least, the lead-in track on the album is the film’s breakout song, “Glory,” a collaboration between Common and John Legend. In addition to contributing “Glory"—you can check out the the music video below—Common plays civil rights activist James Bevel. Curious as to how John Legend became involved? Common explains that here (hint, he suggested Legend’s inclusion). Of course, not every song considered for the film made it onto the soundtrack, or even into the film itself, for that matter.
