Lizzie accepts but on one condition, Andie must move in with her and her husband for the duration of the pregnancy. Will their friendship survive until the birth? Will the relationship troubles between Lizzie and her husband affect their performance as parents?

Drama done poorly can elicit boredom and disdain, but there’s a special type of aghast irritation triggered by terrible cinematic comedy. While humor may be subjective, and wacky situations and jokes themselves can therefore hit or miss depending on the viewer, when a comedic film with naturalistic roots fails to establish a single realistic character whatsoever, it can make one want to toss eggs at its makers. And that, in a nutshell, describes Expecting, the strained, tone-deaf and almost offensively slapdash feature film debut of writer-director Jessie McCormack, whose film careens haplessly from one artificial set-up to the next in...

Michelle Monaghan has had a very much well-deserved rise to recognition in recent years, making a name for herself opposite the likes of Robert Downey, Jr., Jake Gyllenhaal, and Casey Affleck in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Source Code, and Gone Baby Gone. This year sees Monaghan take a slew of very promising roles, and Penthouse North is one I’ve been looking forward to for a while now.
The thriller sees Monaghan starring alongside Michael Keaton, and now the red-band first international trailer has debuted online.
Sara Taylor (Monaghan), a photojournalist blinded in Iraq, is forced to play a deadly game of cat and mouse with the sadistic criminal Hollander (Keaton) – a man who will stop at nothing to get a fortune of stolen diamonds hidden in Sara’s penthouse apartment. Although Sara claims to not know where the diamonds are, Hollander utilizes psychological and physical torture in an effort to break Sara’s resistance.

Here’s the power of celebrity being put to use in the best way possible; Radha Mitchell saw something in Jessie McCormack and her script for “Gus,” committed to executive produce the film, do what she could to get it made and now here they are sharing the final product at SXSW. Mitchell stars alongside Michelle Monaghan as Lizzie and Andie, two best friends with entirely different personalities. Not only is Lizzie more refined compared to Andie’s free-spirited nature, but Lizzie also desperately wants to have a child but can’t conceive while Andie has no interest in having a baby but winds up pregnant after a one-night stand. Andie decides to [ Read More ]

The idea of a woman giving her own baby to a friend who so desperately wants one, but can’t conceive sounds like a weighty core concept through and through, but Jessie McCormack’s “Gus” strikes a unique balance between heartfelt drama and natural comedy, and that’s what attracted talent like Michelle Monaghan to the project. Monaghan stars as Andie, Lizzie’s (Radha Mitchell) longtime friend. When Andie winds up pregnant after a one-night stand, she commits to giving her unborn child to Lizzie so she can finally start a family with her husband, Peter (Jon Dore). Trouble is, before that can happen, Andie needs help getting through the pregnancy so moves into [ Read More ]

Jessie McCormack primarily comes from a theater writing and acting background, but after her short film "The Antagonist," put her on the map, she is now debuting her first feature, "Gus." Following the turbulent relationships of two friends after one gets pregnant and promises the other the child, McCormack brings a distinctly human touch to the drama of the film's script, instilling it with poignancy and humor. What it's about: Lizzie can't conceive. Her best friend Andie gets knocked up from a one night stand and offers to give Lizzie the baby. Complications ensue. Tell Us About Yourself: I’m a native New Yorker and my background is originally in theater. I started off as an actor and my dear friend Aliza Waksal, who was also acting at the time, suggested I write something for us both to perform in. It was strange to me that she had made the...

South by Southwest (SXSW) is just one of many film festivals, we here at Sound On Sight cover yearly. The fest, which takes place every spring in Austin, Texas, began in 1987, and has continued to grow in size every year. The fest announced the first wave of films back in early January, and the lineup included some highly anticipated films such as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Evil Dead, Downloaded and Spring Breakers. Now the full lineup has been announced, and it just might be one of the best lineups the festival has ever programmed.
SXSW takes place March 8-16 in Austin Texas. Here are just some of the films we are excited about.

Some of the best films of the 2012/2013 calender year from Richard Linklater, Harmony Korine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Bujalski, Jeff Nichols, David Gordon Green, Shane Carruth and Joshua Oppenheimer are among the headliner names for the 2013 edition of the South by Southwest Film Festival. With a little over 100 plus film line-up (a whopping 2000+ titles were submitted), almost 70 are world premieres: there is the highly anticipated sophomore film (that has been on our radar since it first went into production) with M. Blash’s (The Wait), Joe Swanberg who makes SXSW his second home will premiere Drinking Buddies, veteran indie filmmaker John Sayles saddles in with Go For Sisters, and rounding out the Narrative Spotlight section we’ve got The Bounceback from Bryan Poyser, Loves Her Gun from Geoff Marslett along with titles we thought might break into Park City, but found an Austin home instead with Jacob Vaughan’s Milo and...
