CBS is making good on its promise to bring After Midnight to its late night lineup in early 2024.
The network will debut the show, hosted by comedian Taylor Tomlinson and based on Comedy Central’s @midnight, on Jan. 16 — or technically Jan. 17, as it debuts at 12:37 a.m. Et/Pt, but at the tail end of the Jan. 16 broadcast day.
The show will feature a panel of comics, actors and other celebrities (guest lineups will be announced later) discussing the internet buzz of the day in a game-show format. After Midnight’s mission statement is to be “the smartest show on television about the dumbest things on the internet.”
After Midnight will air in the post-Late Show With Stephen Colbert spot previously occupied by The Late Late Show, which ran for 28 years under four different hosts. James Corden ended his eight-year tenure as host in April 2023. For the past several months,...

CBS kicks off a new era in late-night on Tuesday, January 16, when it launches “After Midnight” at 12:37 a.m. hosted by comic Taylor Tomlinson.
The series, which will rely on a rotating series of panelists to discuss the latest trends and memes in the digi-sphere, will follow an original hour of CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
“After Midnight,” based on the premise of “@midnight,” a program that ran on Comedy Central between 2013 and 2017,” breaks late-night tradition at CBS, which has long depended on a more typical program after 12:30 a.m. But network executives, realizing that the business of wee-hours TV is in flux, canceled “The Late Late Show” that has run for decades in that slot, hosted by people such as Tom Snyder, Craig Kilborn, Craig Ferguson and James Corden. “After Midnight” is said to cost significantly less to produce — a boon in an era when...

Nearly nine months after James Corden said goodbye to The Late Late Show, CBS has finally dated his replacement.
After Midnight, a reboot of the old Comedy Central game show @midnight, starring rising comedian Taylor Tomlinson, will premiere on Tuesday, January 16.
The show will, of course, air in The Late Late Show’s former spot at 12:37am, following The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
It comes almost a year after Deadline revealed that a reboot of @midnight, which ran for 600 episodes on the sibling Paramount-owned network, would replace Corden.
Tomlinson, who has recorded a number of Netflix specials, won the hosting job at the end of last year, beating X Mayo and Ricky Velez for the gig.
Jack Martin, who was the showrunner of all four seasons of @midnight, will serve as co-showrunner alongside Eric Pierce, who has exec produced series including CBS’ The Challenge: USA and The Wheel.

The Directors Guild of America announced its new Women’s Steering Committee Squad Mentorship Program along with its first class of mentees. In the program, 10 mid-career directors are each paired with filmmakers that are well established in the field.
The Wsc Squad will last for six months. Mentors will not only discuss craft and artistic opportunities with their mentees, but will also provide guidance on the unique challenges involved with navigating the film industry as women. A second round of the Wsc Squad will begin in Jan. 2022.
“We started this program because the need for mentorship and community never goes away, even when you are working at very high levels in the industry. Women-identifying directors deal with particular situations and it was our goal to forge a sort of sisterhood of mid-career directors,” said Amber Sealey, co-chair of the program. “We purposely paired them with mentors who can offer advice...

The industry’s first directing pipeline program for unscripted shows has set its 2019-2020 class, helping to create equal representation behind the scenes on alternative series.
The Alternative Directors Program was launched two years ago to give experienced female and ethnically diverse directors the opportunity to expand their repertoire of alternative formats and complex directing styles. The ultimate goal is hiring them as show directors on an NBC or Universal Television Alternative Studios series.
This year, the program directors will rotate through two to three alternative shows across the network’s daytime, primetime and late night line-ups. During their tenure on each show, they will shadow the respective show directors through prep and production, with the goal of directing a meaningful segment on one of the shows they shadow. The show directors will also serve as their mentors and advocates.

The future is indeed female. NBC announced its inaugural class for their Alternative Directors Program — and they are all women.
The program is the industry’s first directing pipeline program for unscripted shows. The new initiative takes a step toward equal representation behind the scenes on alternative series — a part of the industry that falls short on inclusion despite the numerous unscripted shows on TV. The program gives experienced female and ethnically diverse directors access to expand their repertoire of alternative formats and complex directing styles with the ultimate goal of opening the door to future projects.
The seven program finalists and the celebrated directors who will serve as their mentors are: Madeline Fuste, Sarah De La O, Sharon Everitt, Carrie Havel, Annetta Marion (Making It), Cari Townsend and Lizz Zanin.
The inaugural class are experienced directors who have previously worked on acclaimed unscripted content including Oprah’s Master Class, Dancing with the Stars, Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, and The View as well as sports events such as the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games, and concert films for platinum-selling recording artists.
The Alternative Directors Program was launched in May 2018 as part of NBC’s talent infusion programs (NBC Tips). The program gives female and ethnically diverse directors with at least one directing credit the opportunity to shadow a seasoned director on an NBC show over several weeks including prep, production, and post. The initiative will feed the pipeline for unscripted directors on NBC as well as shows produced by Universal Television Alternative Studio. The network’s ultimate goal is to extend the industry’s pool of experienced diverse directors who can work in various alternative formats.
The initiative is spearheaded by Meredith Ahr who was recently announced as NBC’s new President, Alternative and Reality Group, and Karen Horne, NBC’s Senior Vice President, Programming Talent Development & Inclusion, who oversees the company’s robust onscreen and behind-the-camera diversity efforts.
