Gary Lineker has been a major topic of discussion for days, following his tweet in response to Suella Braverman’s immigration bill.
Last week, the government announced a new policy to halt small boat crossings. It will result in the deportation of asylum seekers who arrive via boat to Rwanda or another “safe third country” without hearing their asylum claim.
Reacting to the news, Lineker expressed his distaste for the decision and responded to someone who pushed back on his view on Twitter.
He wrote: “There is no huge influx. We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries.
“This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s, and I’m out of order?”
After questions were raised about whether the football pundit had broken BBC’s impartiality rules with his social media use,...

On the day that British Prime Minister Theresa May announced her resignation plans, a prominent former politician has unveiled a two-part documentary about the troubles faced by her Conservative party.
Michael Portillo is a former senior Conservative politician and leadership candidate. As the starting gun is sounded on a fresh leadership race, his documentary “Portillo: the Trouble With the Tory Party” was announced by Viacom’s Chanel 5.
Portillo will meet the leaders, power-brokers and insiders who have called the shots on the European conundrum that has split the party, which in modern parlance is referred to as both the Tory and the Conservative party. The question of Britain’s role within Europe, and notably its exit from the European Union with Brexit, has divided party members. Brexit was a key factor in May’s resignation, as she made clear, Friday.

Any regular readers (there must be a few of you; there must be) will be more than aware of this writer’s borderline obsessive love for the movies of one John Carpenter. You’ve got your Halloween, The Thing, They Live or The Fog, but everyone knows the real quality comes in the form of the later films in this cult film-maker, lord of the synth and accomplished ‘tache-wearer’s career and the classics that are Escape From L.A and his TV-movie take on Village Of The Damned. No? Ok, those are both more than a little iffy, but with the latest Blu-ray release of two other generally maligned late efforts in Carpenter’s body of work, we ask the age-old question 'Was Vampires really that bad?'

Alice leads the end-of-an-era productions, judging the Art Fund Museums prize, and the Forest Fringe's search for a new home
End of an era for blockbuster stage spectacles
What an incredible fortnight it has been for socking great stage premieres in London: first Mark-Anthony Turnage's Anna Nicole at the Royal Opera, then Danny Boyle's production of Frankenstein at the National Theatre, and finally, on Monday, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland at the Royal Ballet, choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon. I couldn't help feeling that each of these lavish productions felt slightly fin-de-siècle – the last of the really luxurious premieres before funding cuts hit? It seemed to me that, of all these pieces, it is Alice that will have the greatest staying power. I can easily see it in the Royal's repertory in 30 years' time. It is by no means a perfect piece: it is a bit too choppily action-packed and abrupt,...
