Lionsgate is planning a May 17th theatrical release for the horror film The Strangers: Chapter 1, and this past weekend they continued their viral marketing approach to promoting the movie. When the South by Southwest festivals were held in Austin, Texas last month, the Strangers were spotted around the city. When the music and arts festival Coachella was going on in Indio, California, the Strangers showed up there, too. Over the weekend, the Stagecoach Festival – which is described as “country music’s biggest party” was also held in Indio… and the Strangers crashed that party as well. A video of the Strangers at Stagecoach can be seen in the embed above, and images of their time at the festival can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Lionsgate is planning a May 17th theatrical release for the horror film The Strangers: Chapter 1, and with that date just three weeks away the Motion Picture Association ratings board has announced that they’ve given the film an R rating for “horror violence, language and brief drug use.” That puts it pretty much in line with the ratings to the previous two movies in the Strangers franchise. Released in 2008, The Strangers was rated R for violence/terror and language. The Strangers: Prey at Night followed in 2018 and was rated R for horror violence and terror throughout, and for language.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 was directed by Renny Harlin, who shot an entire trilogy of Strangers movies at the same time. We’ve heard that Lionsgate will also be releasing The Strangers: Chapter 2 and The Strangers: Chapter 3 by the end of the year.

Exclusive: Carla Gugino (The Fall of the House of Usher) is in talks for one of four female leads in Night Electricity, an indie from her longtime collaborator Sebastian Gutierrez (Jett).
Pic’s plot is under wraps, though it’s been described as a psychological drama with thriller elements. David Lancaster is producing, with Gutierrez set direct from his own script.
Gugino recently landed a Critics Choice Award nomination for her turn as multiple characters in The Fall of the House of Usher, the acclaimed Netflix series from Mike Flanagan, with whom she’s collaborated on The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, the Stephen King adaptation Gerald’s Game and other projects. Currently, she can be seen starring on The Girls on the Bus, a political drama series that premiered on Max last month, having also been seen of late in Zelda Williams’ horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein for Focus Features.

In recorded jail calls, “Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed complained about the judge, prosecutor and jurors who served on her case and said she was “railroaded,” according to a court filing on Friday.
Gutierrez Reed was convicted last month of involuntary manslaughter for loading a live bullet into Alec Baldwin’s gun, leading to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. She is due to be sentenced on Monday in a Santa Fe, N.M. courtroom.
In the filing, prosecutor Kari Morrissey asked that she be sentenced to the maximum — 18 months — and said that the recorded calls show her lack of contrition.
“Ms. Gutierrez continues to deny responsibility and blame others,” Morrissey wrote.
The prosecutor provided a summary of the calls, in which Gutierrez Reed spoke with her mother, her boyfriend and a defense paralegal.

GoFundMe has shut down the fundraiser that Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed‘s family started to help pay for the cost of an appeal because it violated the company’s rules against raising money for “the legal defense of alleged financial and violent crimes.”
The family had launched the fundraiser ahead of Gutierrez-Reed’s scheduled sentencing for involuntary manslaughter on April 15. The 26-year-old Arizona woman faces up to 18 months in prison for her role in the accidental shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the low-budget Western. Gutierrez-Reed has been in custody since the Santa Fe jury’s verdict was read March 6.
During her trial, Gutierrez-Reed was represented pro bono by New Mexico attorney Jason Bowles. The GoFundMe, begun by her father, longtime entertainment industry armorer Thell Reed, asked donors to contribute to appeals expenses, with a fundraising goal of $100,000.

Few artists leave a legacy that becomes championed by an entire country. Yet Frida Kahlo stood out as an icon, even while her career unfolded. The iconic Mexican painter and artist built incredible pieces that addressed the pain and suffering of her life. She also pushed back against cultural norms around womanhood, motherhood, and being a partner in a relationship. Amazon’s new documentary, titled Frida, allows the audience to explore her life through her journals.
Frida Plot
Directed by Carla Gutierrez, Frida pulls from Cahlo’s diaries and those of her social circles throughout her life. As she rises to prominence as an artist, she becomes intertwined with Diego Rivera. The two collaborate and use each other as a sounding board, even when they are unfaithful to one another. They built up the Mexican art scene, and over time, Frida became known worldwide for her bold, honest artwork.

Frida Kahlo remains endlessly intriguing, in part because the Mexican artist’s colorful paintings remain striking, mysterious and even slightly disturbing and partly because of her bold, dramatic, sometimes tragic life. The artist has been the subject of several films, both narrative and documentary, and Kahlo has been played beautifully by actresses Salma Hayek and Ofelia Medina among others. But in director/writer Carla Gutierrez’s new biographical documentary Frida, Frida Kahlo plays herself.
Gutierrez’s Frida brings fresh insights into Frida Kahlo’s life and work, by putting that life into her own words for the first time, words exclusively drawn from her letters, interviews and her illustrated diary. We also hear...

At the world premiere of Frida during the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, audiences couldn’t stop talking about director Carla Gutierrez’s choice to animate Frida Kahlo’s paintings throughout the documentary about the artist — and not always in a good way.
“We knew that it was a bold decision,” Gutierrez told IndieWire of the conversation that sprang up around the film. “Obviously, when you’re putting out a film and you’re getting the first reactions, you take them really intensely, and it’s just like, ‘Oh, Ok.’ But we had so many conversations about what we meant and what we wanted to do with animation, that a lot of the things that people brought up or questioned were actually questions that we posed ourselves through the process.”
Though controversial — IndieWire’s Christian Zilko wrote, “Rather than show [Kahlo’s] actual paintings, the film relies on animated versions of them...

Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the “Rust” armorer convicted last week in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, will be sentenced on April 15, a judge ruled Wednesday.
Gutierrez Reed faces a maximum of 18 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter. A jury in Santa Fe, N.M., found her guilty after a two-week trial, in which prosecutors argued that her negligence led to “astonishing” failures of safety.
Gutierrez Reed was responsible for the firearms on set. She accidentally loaded a live bullet into Alec Baldwin’s vintage Colt revolver, which went off, killing Hutchins and wounding the film’s director, Joel Souza. Baldwin, who has denied pulling the trigger, faces his own criminal trial for involuntary manslaughter in July.
Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer ordered Gutierrez Reed taken into custody following the verdict last week, noting the seriousness of the case.
“It’s a death,” the judge said.

Last week, armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, 26, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for an accident on the set of the independent film, Rust.
In 2021, on the set of the movie Rust in Santa Fe, New Mexico, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed by a weapon being used by star Alec Baldwin during a scene rehearsal. The weapon, which was supposed to contain only blanks, had a live round.
Gutierrez was the weapons supervisor on set but did not adequately check the gun before its use on set.
In the trial, lawyers presented information that Gutierrez should have performed gun safety protocols and ensured that no live rounds were brought on set.
Prosecutor Kari Morrissey stated in her closing remarks: “Hannah Gutierrez failed to maintain firearms safety, making a fatal accident willful and foreseeable.”

Sean Garinger, a young father featured in the 2020-21 season of MTV’s 16 and Pregnant, died February 28 in a freak Atv accident at his home in Boone, North Carolina. He was 20.
Garinger, who was the father of two with his then-girlfriend Selena Gutierrez, was driving an Atv on his family’s property on North Woods Drive in Boone when the vehicle went off an embankment and flipped over.
According to the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office, Garinger was thrown from the Atv before the vehicle landed on top of him. In an interview with The U.S. Sun, Garinger’s mother, Mary Hobbs, said her son was moving the Atv from one parking spot on the property to another when the rain-soaking muddy ground beneath the vehicle gave way.
“I ran to neighbors trying to get someone to help me get the Atv off of him,” Hobbs told The Sun.

Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter over the accidental shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
But in a split verdict Wednesday, a 12-member jury in Santa Fe declined to convict her on evidence tampering charges. Jurors returned the decision after less than three hours of deliberating.
The 26-year-old Arizona woman faces up to 18 months in prison for her role in the death of Hutchins. She was remanded into custody after the verdict was read.
The shooting occurred Oct. 21, 2021, when an old-fashioned revolver being handled by Alec Baldwin went off while he was practicing drawing the prop firearm. Prior to that, assistant director David Halls handed Baldwin the weapon and said that it did not contain live ammunition, but it discharged in the direction of Hutchins, who was killed, and director Joel Souza, who was injured. Five live rounds mixed in with dummy rounds were found on set following the shooting.

The owner of Pdq Arm and Prop said that nine days before the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, he had supplied Gutierrez and prop master Sarah Zachry with a single box of dummy rounds for a Colt .45 revolver on Oct. 12, 2021. Kenney testified that he rattled each of the dummies he provided on set to ensure...

‘The Strangers: Chapter 1’ Trailer Looks Like a Direct Remake of the 2008 Home Invasion Horror Movie
The first installment in a brand new reboot trilogy from Lionsgate and director Renny Harlin, The Strangers: Chapter 1 will be available in theaters nationwide on May 17, 2024.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 is said to be something of a remake of the original 2008 movie, while its sequels – Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 – will blaze a new path from there.
Our hope is that the two subsequent movies will allow Renny Harlin to get crazy and inject a little more of his personal filmmaking style into the proceedings, because The Strangers: Chapter 1 indeed does look to be a pretty straight up remake of Bryan Bertino’s 2008 home invasion classic. This first trailer essentially goes through all the familiar beats, ending with a new/lesser version of the most iconic line from Bertino’s movie. “Because you were home” has been replaced with “Because you’re here,” which doesn’t quite have the same punch to it.

The Rust line producer vilified in a state safety probe for having rejected a firearms training request just days before Alec Baldwin accidentally killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on Oct. 21, 2021 defended her decision on the witness stand Wednesday.
Testifying at Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed’s involuntary manslaughter trial in New Mexico, Gabrielle Pickle told jurors she denied the request from Gutierrez-Reed on Oct. 17, 2021 because it was centered on Baldwin’s co-star Brady Noon, who was 15 years old at the time, not something requested for Baldwin’s benefit. “Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed told detectives she checked the dummy rounds on set “most of the time,” a line prosecutors in her ongoing trial underscored to the jury as they aim to prove involuntary manslaughter.
On Tuesday, February, 27, the jury in the ongoing “Rust” trial in New Mexico saw videos of interviews Santa Fe detectives conducted with Gutierrez-Reed in November 2021 after the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the “Rust” set. In the videos, she described her responsibilities and her process for checking for the safety of dummy rounds, which involves shaking each individual round to hear for a rattle to indicate they are a dummy and cannot be fired.
“I am shaking all of them most of the time,” Gutierrez-Reed said.
However, Gutierrez-Reed clarified earlier in the same interview that she had checked all of the rounds, that they had rattled, and she “dummied up the gun” upon...

Updated, 10:48 Am: Hannah Gutierrez-Reed is a “scapegoat” for the 2021 on-set killing of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, the accused armorer’s defense lawyer told a Santa Fe jury today.
“Just because there was a tragedy doesn’t mean a crime was committed,” Jason Bowles added to the five women and seven men sitting in judgment of his client for the fatality on the indie western starring and produced by Alec Baldwin. “It does not mean that Hannah Gutierrez-Reed caused the crimes they have charged her with.”
“They are trying to blame it all on Hannah,” Bowles said of prosecutors and Rust producers in Gutierrez-Reed’s involuntary manslaughter trial. “Why? Because she is an easy target … the least powerful person on that set.”
Charged with involuntary manslaughter and evidence tampering, Gutierrez-Reed could go to state prison for up to three years if found guilty. Recharged last month, Baldwin is set to...

Hannah Gutierrez Reed is scheduled to face a manslaughter trial in two weeks, becoming one of only a handful of people ever tried for an accident on a film set.
The case against her is relatively straightforward. She was responsible for safe handling of guns on “Rust,” the Western starring Alec Baldwin. She loaded a live bullet into Baldwin’s gun. As a result, Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer, was killed.
“The primary goal of an armorer is to ensure that no one is injured by a prop gun,” wrote the prosecutor, Kari Morrissey, in a recent court filing. “Obviously, Ms. Gutierrez failed to ensure that the gun handed to Alec Baldwin was loaded solely with dummy rounds.”
The defense will have to persuade the jury that it’s more complicated than that. Her team is expected to argue that she has been made into a scapegoat for the mistakes of others — including the production team,...

One of the great tragedies of Frida Kahlo’s life is the fact that, for all her brilliance as an artist, she was often defined by the people whose orbits she shared. In the eyes of many, her primary role in history was being Diego Rivera’s wife, a source of inspiration and creative friction that propelled him to greatness as he painted his legendary murals. Her infamous affair with Leon Trotsky only added to the mystique of her image as a muse for male revolutionaries. It’s a wildly simplistic understanding of her life, of course, as Kahlo’s paintings are every bit as historically significant as Rivera’s. From her early embrace of Mexican folk art and Surrealist imagery to her unflinching depictions of female anatomy and malaise, Kahlo...

Well, that’s gotta hurt.
The National Football League isn’t officially saying anything yet, but the league just suffered a major loss – and we’re not talking about the woeful end of Bill Belichick’s reign at the New England Patriots.
Failing to get the nearly decade long antitrust lawsuit over the lucrative Sunday Ticket package thrown out of court, the Roger Goodell-run NFL is going to trial for potentially $6.1 billion just over a week after this year’s Super Bowl.
Rejecting the NFL’s request to dump the case, U.S. District Court Judge Philip Gutierrez on January 11 ordered the trial over non-competitive practices by the NFL to begin on February 22, to be specific.
Literally and figuratively, the only game in town for the NFL, the trial is expected to last about six weeks. If the NFL loses the case, big part of the blast radius of...

There’s a stark contrast to how the NFL approaches broadcast rights to its out-of-market football games compared to the other four professional sports leagues: Fans who want to watch games that aren’t broadcast locally must purchase the Sunday Ticket premium offering.
On Thursday, a federal judge found that the NFL must face a multibillion dollar trial in February challenging the bundling of those rights by its 32 teams and the league exclusively licensing those telecasts. U.S. District Judge Philip Gutierrez concluded that there’s enough evidence to suggest that there may be monopoly ownership of out-of-market games through a multilevel conspiracy that resulted in inflated prices for Sunday Ticket buyers.
The eight-year-old legal battle centers on allegations that the NFL and its clubs conspired in violation of antitrust laws to allow the league to reach exclusive deals with broadcast partners for the right to air out-of-market games. According...

The production entity for Rust must turn over records that could indicate whether Alec Baldwin shirked industry-wide norms on set safety to shoot the movie on a shoestring budget, a judge has ruled on Tuesday.
In what could be a prelude to the refiling of charges against the movie’s actor and producer, prosecutors are seeking documents between Rust Movie Productions and Alec Baldwin, as well as his production company El Dorado Pictures. They’re looking into the possibility that Baldwin stood to profit if he cut corners on set safety related to the use of guns.
The records could help Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and evidence tampering in the fatal shooting of the movie’s cinematographer when a gun Baldwin was holding discharged. She’s argued that she was stopped from adequately performing her job by the movie’s producers, who she claims denied...

Director Renny Harlin (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master) is bringing us not only a remake of the 2008 film The Strangers (watch it Here), but an entire remake trilogy – at least, it has been referred to as a remake trilogy before, but some have said it’s set “within the same universe” as the original film. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Harlin has revealed that the three new Strangers films are titled The Strangers: Chapter 1, The Strangers: Chapter 2, and The Strangers: Chapter 3 – and Entertainment Weekly has also shared the first images from The Strangers: Chapter 1, giving us our first look at the trilogy’s version of the title characters, as well as those played by Madelaine Petsch (Riverdale) and Froy Gutierrez (Cruel Summer). These images can be seen at the bottom of this article.
The new Strangers trilogy was filmed in Slovakia, and all three movies were shot simultaneously.
