World War II was still raging in May 1944. The allied invasion of Normandy — aka D-Day — was just around the corner on June 6th. Americans kept the home fires burning and escaped from the global conflict by going to the movies. Two of the biggest films of the year, Leo McCarey’s “Going My Way” and George Cukor’s “Gaslight,” recently celebrated their 80th anniversaries.
Actually, “Going My Way” had a special “Fighting Front” premiere on April 27th: 65 prints were shipped to battle fronts and shown “from Alaska to Italy, and from England to the jungles of Burma.” The sentimental comedy-drama-musical arrived in New York on May 3rd.
And it was just the uplifting film audiences needed. Bing Crosby starred as Father O’Malley, a laid-back young priest who arrives at a debt-ridden New York City church that is run by the older, set-in-his ways Father Fitzgibbon (Barry Fitzgerald). The elder...

Navigating the waters of divorce and child-sharing gets more complicated for Jim when the owner of his favorite sports teams (Donald Faison) enters the picture and wins Julia’s heart.
Its first season ended in March after 13 episodes.

[This story contains spoilers for Ahsoka and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.]
Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Mary Elizabeth Winstead had to let two exciting projects in Ahsoka and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off speak for themselves, but now she’s finally looking back on her rather significant 2023.
In early 2022, Winstead officially joined the Star Wars galaxy in order to bring the beloved animated character of General Hera Syndulla to live-action for the first time. When the offer originally came in from Ahsoka creator Dave Filoni, it allowed Winstead the opportunity to reunite with Rosario Dawson 16 years after they last shared the screen in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof. It also presented her the chance to join the storied franchise that she already had a great deal of familiarity with, as her life partner, Ewan McGregor, has been playing Obi-Wan Kenobi since the late ‘90s and had just wrapped his own eponymously titled Star Wars Disney+ series.

Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) goes on quite a journey to defeat Ramona Flowers’ (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) exes in the Scott Pilgrim franchise, which began as graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, was brought to the big screen by Edgar Wright in 2010 with Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, and most recently in Netflix‘s anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. The show brought to life the characters who inhabited the pages of O’Malley’s books with help from the film’s cast as Cera, Winstead, and many more reprised their live-action roles as voice actors this time around. For those less familiar with the IP, Scott is a twentysomething Canadian band member who finds himself obsessed with Ramona Flowers, a mysterious American with an ever-changing, brightly-hued hairdo. Linked to the younger Knives Chau (Ellen Wong), his draw to Ramona outweighs all else, even when he learns she has a league of...

The Bricklayer, by director Renny Harlin, is better than your average espionage action thriller but just doesn’t have any real novelty to jump from that bar. It’s good that it has a great cast. Aaron Eckhart, Nina Dobrev, and Tim Blake Nelson in one film feels like it must be a heavy drama, but the plot will give you a feeling that there are a lot of stock characters in the film, tailor-made for action thrillers. The main role, which I refer to as the Bruce Willis role—a hard-boiled, old-school yet slick agent—goes to Aaron Eckhart, who does well with the bricklaying tools to kill people, as he knows how to give that steely, ice-cold look just a bit off the camera. Nina Dobrev gets a chance to essay the role of an agent, and she seems to have been cast against type, and does a good job as well.

It’s a battle of the exes like you’ve never seen before in the first full look at Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the new anime series from Netflix.
The two-minute teaser for the show, created for television by executive producers and co-showrunners Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, debuted during New York Comic Con on Saturday. As part of the hour-long panel, O’Malley and Grabinski not only presented the trailer and teased the series, but confirmed that Julian Cihi will voice the Katayanagi Twins (Kyle and Ken).
The trailer takes fans back to Toronto “not too long ago” as Scott asks out Ramona Flowers, the “girl of my dreams.” But in order to date her, Scott must defeat her “seven evil exes.” Electric battles and even more electric guitar riffs set up a new chapter in the Scott Pilgrim saga, which sees the return of the live-action cast as their respective characters.

BookTok has become a major marketing force in the publishing world. It’s catapulted numerous titles to bestseller lists, helped boost some authors’ sales by 60% year-over-year from 2021 to 2022, and has become a regular topic in quarterly earnings calls at book retailers like Indigo.
TikTok‘s owner ByteDance apparently thinks it can wield that selling power for itself: It has begun soliciting authors to publish their books with its own recently launched publishing house, 8th Note Press.
According to The New York Times, ByteDance filed a trademark for “8th Note Press” in April 2023, describing the endeavour not only as a publisher, but as an ecosystem where people can find, buy, read, review, and discuss books.
We’re not exactly sure what that means functionally. Maybe ByteDance wants to build an Amazon/Goodreads competitor? Either way, we do know ByteDance hired former Penguin Random House editor Katherine Pelz as 8th Note Press’ lead acquisitions editor,...

Molly Shannon may not be one of the first names you think of when reflecting on "Saturday Night Live" legends, but she should be. She's one of the few cast members to see a recurring character given their own movie, and although it's not one of the late night sketch shows better big screen productions, it's hard to deny that Mary Katherine Gallagher is one of the most famous and beloved characters from the show's history.
However, those hoping to see Mary Katherine Gallagher return in the latest episode of "SNL" walked away disappointed, because the character only returned by way of two aside references rather than a full blown sketch revival. Instead, Shannon opted to bring back one of her other famous recurring bits with a little help from musical guests, the Jonas Brothers. When it was announced that Molly Shannon would be returning to Studio 8H to host “Saturday Night Live” for the second time this weekend, many fans of the NBC sketch show expected a rather nostalgic episode. Shannon built up a large arsenal of beloved reoccurring characters during her original run as a cast member from 1995-2001, and her hosting gig had more to do with her legacy on the show than with her recent projects like “A Good Person” or “The Other Two.”
Shannon’s opening monologue mostly played things straight, as she plugged her memoir “Hello, Molly” and recalled advice that her father gave her to never give up in the face of adversity. That soon turned into a musical number, where various cast members showed up to tell Shannon about the problems that they currently face. The segment featured several high-profile cameos from her longtime comedy friends — including...

It’s been almost 25 years since she first appeared on the scene, but somehow Sally O’Malley is still 50 years-old. Molly Shannon‘s return to Saturday Night Live this weekend as host – her third turn as headliner since leaving the show in 2001 – brought with it one of her most enduring characters.
Sally’s had her run-ins with the Rockettes and the Sopranos, but this time, she’s been brought in to bring “a more mature stage” energy to the Jonas Brothers. Choreographers played by Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang are elbowed aside as O’Malley takes center stage.

SNL saved the best for last.
Host Molly Shannon brought back one more of her beloved characters before the show wrapped Saturday — the inimitable Sally O’Malley.
The skit began with two young choreographers (played by Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang) being told they were getting some help from a more mature hoofer who can best prepare the Jonas Brothers for their Las Vegas residency.
Out comes O’Malley, dressed traditionally in her red top and stretchy trousers that she can’t seem to pull up enough. And yes, she’s once again proud to say that she’s 50 and likes to kick, stretch and kick.
When asked if she’s truly prepared to take on such a responsibility, O’Malley declares how she just wrapped “five decades of dirty dancing and red pantsing. I got half century of Sizzler in my Lady Schnizzle.”
Then she begins to tug up her...
