In the more than 20 years since Jonathan Larson’s “Rent” first debuted on Broadway, the conversation of adaptation has often come up: Film director Chris Columbus infamously brought the story to the big screen in 2005, Michael John Warren similarly shot one of the final performances of the original theater run in 2008, and talk about television wasn’t far behind. But in order for Larson’s family to feel ready to bring the project to a new medium, it had to be a combination of “the right timing [and] the right people,” says Julie Larson. Enter prolific producers such as Marc Platt, the show’s original director Michael Greif and the Fox network, and “Rent” is seeing a new life in the form of a live television musical on Jan. 27.

It’s highly possible that you don’t know that Hillsong United exists. The band members themselves confess this in “Hillsong – Let Hope Rise” — a new concert-based documentary from director Michael John Warren (“Jay-z: Fade To Black”) — when guitarist Jad Gillies explains, “We’re the biggest band you’ve never heard of. My own neighbors have no idea what I did last night.” What Gillies “did last night,” to be clear, is sell out an arena like The Forum in Los Angeles. And before that, the Hollywood Bowl. And before that, the O2 Arena in London and other very large concert.

Tom Hanks and Clint Eastwood’s real-life drama about airline pilot Sully (Warner Bros.) far surpassed all expectations, making nearly $10 million more than my prediction with an opening weekend of $35 million in 3,525 theaters, also making it one of the biggest openings for a movie opening the weekend after Labor Day. The Screen Gems thriller When the Bough Breaks disappointed compared to some of their similar releases, taking second place with around where we predicted with around $14 million. The lower profile animated film The Wild Life (Summit/Lionsgate) did end up in fifth place behind Don’t Breathe and Suicide Squad, but with a measly $3.3 million in 2,493 theaters. For the second consecutive year, Warner Bros. Pictures International has exceeded the coveted $3 billion mark at the international box office. This benchmark comes on the heels of the release of The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, which surpassed $400 million at the international box office this weekend and is still going strong.
Nine Warner Bros. Pictures films have exceeded $100 million internationally, topped by Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (with Paramount Pictures), which has taken in an astounding $467 million outside of the U.S. to date, and Godzilla (with Legendary Pictures), which has earned $327 million overseas.
Four titles – Doug Liman’s Edge Of Tomorrow (with Village Roadshow Pictures), Phil Lord & Christopher Miller’s The Lego Movie (also with Village Roadshow Pictures), and Noam Murro and Zack Snyder’s 300: Rise Of An Empire (with Legendary), along with the 2014 spillover grosses from The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug...

Kartemquin Films has joined director-producer Brent Huffman on the documentary Saving Mes Aynak, about the imperiled 2,000-year-old Buddha statue in Afghanistan (pictured).
Huffman has been independently shooting at the Mes Aynak site in Afghanistan since 2011 and brought the documentary to Kartemquin Films.
He aims to finish editing imminently in time for a 2014 premiere.
“As the premiere destination for complex social issue films that intend on making a global impact, Kartemquin is the dream home for Saving Mes Aynak,” said Huffman.
Saving Mes Aynak was one of 18 documentaries that received grant funding from the John T and Catherine D MacArthur Foundation this year. Other funding has come from smaller grants and a successful Kickstarter campaign.
“We are delighted to bring Brent and his film to Kartemquin,” said Justine Nagan, Kartemquin’s executive director. “Its memorable characters and unique narrative has enormous potential to raise awareness around this important issue.
