In the UK in the 1990s, bodybuilding was a freak pursuit – the domain of weirdos who painted themselves with Ronseal and stretched tiny Lycra hammocks across acres of skin the texture of an Arbroath Smokie in an attempt to resemble Marvel’s The Thing. Nobody knew what a deltoid was. Or a protein window. Fit people were the ones who played a weekly game of five-a-side before the pub. Fake tan smelt of biscuits, and even Sporty Spice didn’t have abs.
When Gladiators first arrived on TV then, its stars were curios. We only saw people like them once a year, pulling a truck on The World’s Strongest Man or being gawped at by Clive James on Television. These demigods with 19 inch biceps and thighs the size of dustbins didn’t walk among us.

(To celebrate "Titanic" and its impending 25th-anniversary re-release, we've put together a week of explorations, inquires, and deep dives into James Cameron's box office-smashing disaster epic.)
Among the impressive ensemble of characters in James Cameron's 1997 epic "Titanic," one of the most endearing is Fabrizio (Danny Nucci), bestie of Leonardo DiCaprio's Jack Dawson. The pair wins their tickets aboard the doomed America-bound ocean liner in a card game; standing at the ship's bow, Fabrizio claims to be able to see the Statue of Liberty already – "Very small, of course."
Over the movie's six-month shoot, Nucci's character would have as full of an arc as you could get in a disaster picture: he gets a ticket to America, dances below decks, and tragically perishes along with scores of other passengers and crew. But the death scene in the final product — in which Fabrizio is crushed by one of the ship's...

Summer is almost over. You can feel it as the days are getting longer. You can smell it as the air gets a little cooler and that first bit of foliage starts to fall. While the heat is still raging in large swaths of the U.S. (which this streaming list has been composed for), the truth is things are starting to quiet down.
In that vein, it’s a perfect time to curl up with someone and “Netflix and chill” as the kids might say. It’s also just a good time to revisit some old favorites, which Netflix is bringing back to the streaming service in droves. Here are the best of those gems.

Dr. Evil. Fembots. Mini-Me. You’re probably a fan of the Austin Powers movies if these names mean anything. The films were produced and written by Mike Myers, who also starred as the title character and Dr. Evil.
The franchise parodies numerous films and characters, including the James Bond series and Jason King. It also incorporates various other elements of popular culture, following a British spy’s quest to bring his nemesis down.
The movies are filled with humor, action, and references to pop culture, making them timeless classics. If you want to watch the Austin Powers movies in order, you’ve come to the right place. There are three Austin Powers Movies; the first film in the Austin Powers series was produced by Mike Myers, Demi Moore, Jennifer Todd, and Suzanne Todd. However, the last two Austin Powers films were also made by John S. Lyons and Eric McLeod.

“The Terminal List” is dead-set on surviving scathing reviews.
The Chris Pratt-led Prime Video series is based on a book by former Navy Seal Jack Carr, who serves as an executive producer on the show. While the series has a 94 percent audience score and a 39 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, Carr told Fox News that liberal-leaning media critics slammed the series because “there’s not this woke stuff that’s shoved into it” (via Mediaite).
“There’s no ‘woke’ or ‘anti-woke,’ but just because there’s not this ‘woke’ stuff that’s shoved into it, then it’s perceived — by critics, at least — as not promoting their agenda, so they’re going to hate it,” Carr said. “We don’t mention right, left, conservative, liberal, none of those things are even mentioned.”
Carr called out a Daily Beast review that likened the series to an “unhinged right-wing revenge fantasy.

Critics largely panned The Terminal List, but viewership numbers for the Prime Video military drama have given series star Chris Pratt reason to celebrate. And celebrate he did, by clapping back at critics on Instagram with a Dr. Evil meme. Pratt stars in The Terminal List as Navy Seal James Reece. In it, Reece discovers dark forces working against him after his platoon is ambushed, and a ruthlessly violent quest for answers follows. The Daily Beast slammed the series as an “unhinged right-wing revenge fantasy” and “a wet dream for militia-minded anti-establishment kooks.” The Hollywood Reporter‘s review said, “It’s the entertainment equivalent of a charred hockey puck, with the same limited range of flavor and aesthetics.” And Slate.com‘s main critique was that it depicted the murder of Reece’s child (which also happens in the book on which it’s based). Based on those reviews and more,...

"Austin Powers in Goldmember" is packed with star-studded cameos, starting with the film's blockbuster opening sequence. The first couple of minutes of the spy spoof features an impressive display of action, so much that it feels a little out of sorts for Austin Powers and falls more in line with a "Mission: Impossible." But that's the point, because suddenly we realize that we're watching a cinematic adaptation of Austin's life, complete with Tom Cruise as the International Man of Mystery and Gwyneth Paltrow as his provocatively named female sidekick Dixie Normous. The scene continues with the now-disgraced Kevin Spacey appearing as Dr. Evil and...

Beyoncé is just fine being a “whole lot of woman.”
At age 19, the global superstar appeared in Jay Roach’s “Austin Powers in Goldmember” in 2002 as Foxxy Cleopatra, inspired by Pam Grier’s roles in ’70s blaxploitation films. Foxxy was an FBI agent who was previously romantically involved with Austin Powers (Mike Myers) and moonlights as a Studio 69 nightclub singer. The role marked Beyoncé’s first major film debut.
Yet Beyoncé made sure that the marketing materials were up to par for both her image and Foxxy’s.
“When we were shooting, someone brought her a poster that would be promoting the movie,” makeup artist Kate Biscoe said to Vulture in an oral history of the film. “He showed it to her, like, ‘Do you like it?’ And she was kind of like, ‘Yeah.’ He goes, ‘What’s the matter?’ And she says, ‘You made me too skinny. It’s not me.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Audacious, outrageous, bleakly funny. Not since Charlie Chaplin sent up Hitler and invited us to laugh at terrible reality has there been a movie like this. I’m “biast” (pro): love Armando Iannucci’s work
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Presenting… Monty Python’s production of George Orwell’s 1984. Or damn close to it. So The Death of Stalin is akin to Terry Gilliam’s Brazil, then? Well, sort of. (I definitely scribbled “Brazil” in my notes while watching.) But Brazil was fiction; clearly inspired by actual totalitarian regimes, but entirely fictional. Stalin, however, is based on terrible reality. Perhaps not since Charlie Chaplin’s 1940 satire The Great Dictator has a filmmaker taken on such awful personalities and events and attempted to make us laugh about it all.

You probably know what Lego are, and you probably know who Batman is (don’t say “Bruce Wayne, Gotham’s billionaire playboy”), and that brand awareness helped to propel 2015’s “The Lego Movie” and this February’s “The Lego Batman Movie” into massive hits that transcended their target audience, appealing equally to adults and children alike. On the other hand — and this is a scientific fact — not a single person who’s gone through puberty has ever heard of “Ninjago.” Ninjas? Sure. The concept of going? Absolutely. But “Ninjago”? That’s definitely not a real thing, let alone a popular line of toys that’s spawned graphic novels, video games, and a television show that’s now been on the air for six full seasons.

The first two Austin Powers films are pretty spectacular 007 parodies, setting the bar for a lot of comedies in the late '90s. Even with Wayne's World (just forget about Love Guru), these films have been the defining projects of Mike Myers' career, with many classic jokes living on in daily conversation two decades later.
The third film, Austin Powers in Goldmember, which I felt was the least successful and most repetitive, did leave the plot at an odd point, with Austin Powers and Dr. Evil joining forces as brothers, leaving Scott Evil (Seth Green) to carry on his father's legacy. There hasn't been an Austin Powers film in fifteen years, so is the franchise dead and buried? Or just frozen in cyrosleep until the hero is needed again?

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery is celebration its 20th anniversary this week so naturally people are reminiscing with some great stories. My favorite story of the day has to involve the fact that the movie had to cover up Mike Meyers’ butt cheeks in order to avoid an R-rating. Considering how much other sexual innuendos there were in the film, it’s comical that this was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Another juicy tidbit that we picked up today revolves around those pesky ill-tempered sea bass used in the movie, or should I say not used. In Dr.

It’s been 20 years since Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery was released in theaters, which means it’s been about 15 years since somebody unironically asked, “Do I make you horny?” In that time, the bawdy, madcap franchise has gone from being a surprise smash hit to a sometimes embarrassing reminder of the nation’s questionable comedic tastes. Jay Roach, out doing promotional rounds for the "All the Way" film which premiered last night on HBO, confirmed he's still discussing the film with Myers.
Speaking with Larry King Now, Roach says he and Myers are still kicking around ideas, but nothing has quite "stuck yet" and neither is in a rush to make a release date:
"You know, Mike Myers and I talk about it every time we get together. I would say it's in a latent phase right now, but someday if we find the right idea that seems to have it earn itself, for sure. Mike gave me the break of a lifetime in letting me direct [Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery] so I'm always good to go."

No matter how dated the catchphrase may now be, there’s no denying the enduring popularity of the Austin Powers franchise, with International Man of Mystery (1997), The Spy who Shagged Me (1999), and Goldmember (2003) being deserved comedy classics, even if by Goldmember the characters were beginning to outstay their welcome. The final entry was the perfect send off to the franchise, but it turns out director Jay Roach and star Mike Myers aren’t ruling out the return of the oversexed super spy and his scene stealing arch nemesis Dr. Evil, with Roach saying as much during an interview on Larry King Now: “You know, Mike Myers and I talk about it every time we get together,” said Roach on Larry King Now. “I would say it’s in a latent phase right now, but someday if we find the right idea that seems to have it earn itself, for sure.

Ben Stiller returns in Zoolander 2 - a sequel that takes its time finally getting going...
15 years have passed since Ben Stiller's clueless male model Derek Zoolander learned that there was more to life than being really, really, really ridiculously good-looking and was brilliantly, absurdly quotable doing it. In a world where Dumb & Dumber To came out in 2014, Zoolander 2 doesn't really feel like as much of a stretch, but that's one of the only reasons why it doesn't feel like a bit of a letdown either.
That's not to say there's not tonnes of potential here. The world of fame and fashion has only grown more absurd since 2001 and, in fact, the real world sometimes feels a little closer to the arch vapidity depicted in the original film. Social media has all but taken over the world, the Kardashians are somehow seen to be worth...

Chicago – Director Jay Roach loves his work, heading into another phase of his successful career. The man who directed the first two “Austin Powers” films is now taking on movie and American history with “Trumbo,” featuring Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”) as the 1950s blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo.
The “black list” was a partnership between government and the film industry. Whenever a writer, director or actor would not “name names” to the House UnAmerican Activities Committee (Huac) of the the 1950s, they effectively ended any chance of getting hired in Hollywood. Huac was looking for Communists, as the threat from Soviet Russia at the time was seen as the greatest menace to American freedom. Never mind that Russia was a ally of the U.S. only ten years earlier during World War II, or that being a Communist was not illegal in America. It was a witch hunt, pure and simple,...

Oh, "Spectre," you vex me. You vex me mightily. There is a sense as you're watching the first half of the film that they're having fun playing with the iconography of the entire series, staging scenes that nod at moments from a number of the other films. There's one in particular, a sort of brutal homage to the fight with Robert Shaw on the train in "From Russia With Love," that I think might be the best moment in the film. In those moments, "Spectre" is enjoyable and a fitting entry to celebrate the history of Bond on film. But the things that the film gets wrong, it gets so powerfully wrong that I can honestly say they have retroactively ruined the Daniel Craig films for me. I will have to actively ignore the information and ideas that are introduced here if I'm going to enjoy the three films that have already been released.

The supremely British Paul McCartney, staccato king Barack Obama, a spaced-out Keith Richards: Dana Carvey and Jimmy Fallon cover the hilarious, routine bases during The Tonight Show's Halloween-themed "Wheel of Musical Impressions." In the clip, the master imitators take turns spinning a fake wheel, bringing up a name and a Halloween-spun scenario.
Carvey does a solid job with "President Obama talking about trick-or-treaters": "Keep your eyes on the prize," he tells candy-seeking kids. "If you ring the doorbell and you're expecting a Kit-Kat bar or a peanut butter cup,...

The world lost just lost another shining light: a brilliant artist who regularly shared his vision of heroes and adventures as he created countless pages of comics and an upstanding gentleman who shared his vision of living life with courtesy, kindness and class as he led by example.
Murphy Anderson passed away Friday at age 89. He had been struggling in recent years, but it’s still a crushing blow to those who loved the man and his work. Murphy, a prolific comic artist, was in facet one of the first wave of “fanboys” to turn professional. It's "the best Jurassic Park sequel ever made, which really isn't saying much." Remember when we were all excited for a week this summer for Jurassic World, then saw it, and subsequently moved on with our lives? Screen Junkies has now given us an Honest Trailer for the record-setting blockbuster, and they're asking all the right questions about the movie that's big into dino fights, and less into coherent plot points. Starring two characters no one really cares about and a poor man's Dr. Evil as a villain, Jurassic World provides more questions than it does answers. How has no one fixed the crappy fence or lazy security guard issue? Are there zero cell phone towers on...

I'm on record as someone that enjoyed Jurassic World for the spectacle of the thing. I'll also be the first to nod my head, agreeing with any complaint you may have, but I was still able to have a lot of fun watching it and if box office receipts mean anything, people are telling their friends they need to see it too as the film is now over $1.55 billion worldwide and the third highest grossing film both domestically and internationally, and it looks like it's going to come up just shy of besting Titanic for that second spot domestically. That's pretty amazing for a film so many enjoy trashing. What's curious about that, though, is whether or not they can manage to capture lightning in a bottle a second time because even as someone that had fun with this film, I have a hard time explaining its box office success.

“Austin Powers” star Verne Troyer is now a documentarian. That is if you consider recording a hot pursuit through Lax, up until the suspect gets tasered by security, a short film. Troyer, who played Dr. Evil’s Mini-Me in the “The Spy Who Shagged Me” and “Goldmember,” was catching a flight to Ohio on Wednesday when he caught a shady character ignoring airport security. The Tsa told NBC4 in Columbus, Ohio that at about 11 a.m. Wednesday, 21-year-old Christian James Heinz refused to be screened by Tsa agents. After airport police officers were called to assist, Heinz continued to refuse to cooperate.

Quick…name a favorable film where the landscape is run by (or at least partially include) the demographic of little people as part of the instrumental storyline? C’mon…it should not be that difficult, okay? If you want to mention say Darby O’Gill and the Little People then that would fine. How about Bad Santa or Poltergeist for that matter?

The debate as to whether some of these selected films featuring these pint-sized performers are considered positive, exploitative or dismissive are not up for discussion (although one of these considerations could apply in the minds of a few folks). George Lucas' original plan was to make Star Wars: Episode VII and then he was going to sell Lucasfilm and the rights to the Star Wars franchise, but he had a change of heart when Disney offered him $4 billion. Make sure you read that dollar amount with your best Dr. Evil voice for full effect. After the sale, Lucas turned over his outlines for the new trilogy to Disney. They then passed it along to Michael Arndt, who was the first screenwriter to work on Disney and J.J. Abrams' Star Wars VII script. "The ones that I sold to Disney, they came up to the decision that they didn't really want to do those," Lucas told Cinemablend. "So they made up their own. So it's not the ones that I originally wrote [on screen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens]." Rumor has it, Lucas' treatment was well liked by Arndt because it...

There's a weird kind of suspense that courses through "Antiques Roadshow," the super boring PBS program that you've probably seen if you've left the television on after your cat steps on your remote control. In the show, people bring their antiques or oddities to a location (usually a cavernous convention hall, sometimes in places like the Mohegan Sun casino) and have their valuables appraised. Sometimes the professionals doing the appraisals will tell the person that they're bring them junk, in fact, this is most of the show. But the thrill of watching the show comes from someone bringing some dusty relic that turns out to be a priceless artifact.
